Sub-Pixel Event Repositioning Algorithms For Chandra X-Ray Astronomical Imaging, Jingqiang Li Jan 2004

Sub-Pixel Event Repositioning Algorithms For Chandra X-Ray Astronomical Imaging, Jingqiang Li

Theses

Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) offers unprecedented spatial resolution for X-ray astronomical imaging. As focal plane arrays, ACIS CCDs were fabricated to satisfy CXO's requirements in spatial and spectral specifications, and operate in photon-counting mode to record any photoelectric interactions into event lists with energy information and charge split morphology (grade). The charge cloud generated by a single X-ray photon has a relatively small size compared to ACIS pixel, and the shape is approximated by an axial-symmetric Gaussian with full width half maximum (FWHM) about 2 to 4 microns. This fact indicates that the …

The survey findings among the design students and faculty at …

Models Of Statistical Self-Similarity For Signal And Image Synthesis, Seungsin Lee Jan 2004

Models Of Statistical Self-Similarity For Signal And Image Synthesis, Seungsin Lee

Theses

Statistical self-similarity of random processes in continuous-domains is defined through invariance of their statistics to time or spatial scaling. In discrete-time, scaling by an arbitrary factor of signals can be accomplished through frequency warping, and statistical self-similarity is defined by the discrete-time continuous-dilation scaling operation. Unlike other self-similarity models mostly relying on characteristics of continuous self-similarity other than scaling, this model provides a way to express discrete-time statistical self-similarity using scaling of discrete-time signals. This dissertation studies the discrete-time self-similarity model based on the new scaling operation, and develops its properties, which reveals relations with other models. Furthermore, it also …

Improving Existing Wayfinding Theory For Hospital Environments, Youngjoo Park

Theses

A hospital is an institution that provides medical, surgical or psychiatric care and treatment of the sick or the injured. With those specialized purposes, a hospital has a unique environment and hospital users have special needs and a wide range of personal characteristics. People visiting or admitted to a hospital are often anxious. Losing their way or becoming disoriented in a complex hospital facility increases anxiety and stress. Stress levels can adversely affect the results of medical treatment. Poor wayfinding design can elevate stress levels, which can adversely affect medical treatment, and decrease patients' satisfaction with the quality of medical …

Theses

The purpose of this study was to consider emotional recognition ability among incarcerated youth. Specifically, thirty-eight inmates who were eligible for a Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) under New York State law participated in the study. Participants were administered Ekman's facial discrimination task (1976), the Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form (SRM-SF; Gibbs, Basinger, &Fuller, 1992), and an Emotional Intelligence Survey (Schutte et al., 1998). Results showed the incarcerated youth were less accurate in identifying emotions from facial expressions than were non-incarcerated young adults. Further, incarcerated youth with identified learning disabilities were even less accurate in their ability to recognize emotions than …

The Persuasive Image, George D. Grove Jan 2004

The Persuasive Image, George D. Grove

Theses

The unfortunate suburban migration continues. These newly arrived suburbanites exchange their multidimensional urban city views for those of a carefully constructed and intensely controlled pastoral view. This view from their windows is one that symbolizes their ownership of the land and their freedom from dense urban living conditions. The open space and grass function as powerful reminders of why they live in suburbia. But what would occur if the suburbanites were to exchange their view of plastic Eden with images from the city? What if the view of their altered yards and obsessively manicured gardens were intentionally replaced with views …

Effects Of Riparian Forest Buffers On Water Quality In The Canandaigua Lake Watershed, Trish Rider Jan 2004

Effects Of Riparian Forest Buffers On Water Quality In The Canandaigua Lake Watershed, Trish Rider

Theses

As watershed landscapes have been transformed to accommodate agriculture and urbanization, non-point source pollution has emerged as an important environmental issue, and riparian forest buffers (RFB) are recommended to control the flow of pollution into stream ecosystems. The Natural Resources Conservation Service recommends that RFBs have a width of at least 30 meters to protect water quality from surface runoff and non-point source pollution. The water quality, RFBs, and land uses within two tributaries of the Canandaigua Lake Watershed were investigated to determine if a positive correlation exists between water quality and RFB width as well as to determine if …

Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom: Increasing Learning And Retention, Emily K. Hesek

Theses

A growing body of research suggests that intrinsic motivation and self-determination are key factors in academic achievement and success. The present study investigated whether children learned and retained information better when taught a social skills lesson using a self-determining approach, rather than a traditional directive lesson plan. In particular, this study examined whether lesson plans that included choice and autonomy support would affect students' intrinsic motivation for the task, and improve their learning and retention over time. Fifty-six fourth grade students from a large suburban school district in upstate New York participated. Significant group differences were found on a pre-test …

Image Sequence Restoration By Median Filtering, Shawn R. Jackson Jan 2004

Image Sequence Restoration By Median Filtering, Shawn R. Jackson

Theses

Median filters are non-linear filters that fit in the generic category of order-statistic filters. Median filters are widely used for reducing random defects, commonly characterized by impulse or "salt and pepper" noise in a single image. Motion estimation is the process of estimating the displacement vector between like pixels in the current frame and the reference frame. When dealing with a motion sequence, the motion vectors are the key for operating on corresponding pixels in several frames. This work explores the use of various motion estimation algorithms in combination with various median filter algorithms to provide noise suppression. The results …

Use Of System Dynamics And Easel For Simulation Of The Software Development Process, Alicia Strupp Jan 2004

Use Of System Dynamics And Easel For Simulation Of The Software Development Process, Alicia Strupp

Theses

Team software development is a complex and mostly unpredictable process and is characterized by inefficient use of staff and calendar resources. Given the magnitude of software development costs, a deeper understanding of the process may suggest ways to improve resource utilization. Simulation modeling is a useful approach to study the dynamics of complex systems. System dynamics characterizes systems as collections of interacting, non-linear feedback loops. The foundations of system dynamics were developed at MIT in the early 1950s. Since that time, system dynamics has been applied to a large number of complex system domains. In the early 1980s, the system …

Ethical Dilemmas In Retrospective Studies On Genital Surgery In The Treatment Of Intersexual Infants, Sharon Sytsma Jan 2004

Ethical Dilemmas In Retrospective Studies On Genital Surgery In The Treatment Of Intersexual Infants, Sharon Sytsma

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Intersexual infants and infants with other genital abnormalities often receive genital surgery for sex assignment or for normalizing purposes. The wisdom and beneficence of these practices have been questioned by intersexual individuals, support groups, some doctors, and the media. Because the practices have been developed without long-term studies to evaluate them, pediatric urologists and parents of such children must face decisions with very little guidance from empirical support. In the face of ignorance about what is really the best medical response to intersexuality or genital abnormalities, some have argued for a moratorium on infant genital surgery until empirical studies are …

Constructive Habituation As An Educational Approach To Process-Object Reification In Mathematics, Alonzo F. Peterson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sfard and Thompson (1994) state that what matters most is that educators develop ways of thinking, teaching, and learning mathematics. This study introduced constructive habituation, a new strategy developed to aid both students and teachers in the thinking, teaching, and learning of mathematics. Constructive habituation attempts to unite constructivist teaching methods aimed at supporting students’ conceptual understanding of content and habituationist teaching method aimed at establishing routine responses to routine tasks. This study is exploratory in nature, designed to investigate if constructive habituation is a more effective means than a traditional teaching method in helping students reach process-object reification as …

Better Writing, Better Thinking: Using Legal Writing Pedagogy In The "Casebook" Classroom (Without Grading Papers), Mary Beth Beazley

Scholarly Works

In this Article, Professor Beazley proposes that a Legal Writing revolution is the next revolution in legal education, and that the revolution is not just coming, it has begun. She offers first steps for law school faculty to take in furtherance of this revolution. Professor Beazley argues that the pioneers of this new revolution are Legal Writing faculty. Section I of this Article examines some ways that the law school culture that segregates Legal Writing faculty has both promoted their opportunities to develop innovative pedagogies and inhibited their ability to share those pedagogies with other faculty. Section II explains certain …
