First Order Sigma-Delta Modulator Of An Oversampling Adc Design In Cmos Using Floating Gate Mosfets, Syam Prasad Sbs Kommana
LSU Master's Theses
We report a new architecture for a sigma-delta oversampling analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in which the first order modulator is realized using the floating gate MOSFETs at the input stage of an integrator and the comparator. The first order modulator is designed using an 8 MHz sampling clock frequency and implemented in a standard 1.5µm n-well CMOS process. The decimator is an off-chip sinc-filter and is programmed using the VERILOG and tested with Altera Flex EPF10K70RC240 FPGA board. The ADC gives an 8-bit resolution with a 65 kHz bandwidth.
An Integrative Model Of Clients' Decision To Adopt An Application Service Provider, Yurong Yao
An Integrative Model Of Clients' Decision To Adopt An Application Service Provider, Yurong Yao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Application Services Providers (ASPs) exploit the economics of delivering commercial off-the-shelf software over the Internet to many dispersed users, but the decision-making process to adopt the ASP business model can be complex requiring a comprehensive consideration of various factors. As a new form of outsourcing, the ASP business model differs from traditional outsourcing models with respect to the attributes associated with vendors, clients, and applications. These differences are expected to demand decision models that are distinct from those in the traditional IS outsourcing. In this study, an integrative model for ASP adoption that incorporates economic determinants, strategic determinants, and social …
Cost Effective And Sequential Methods For Teaching Educational Paraprofessionals To Implement Behavior Management Strategies In Preschool Classrooms, Natalie Jan Slider
Cost Effective And Sequential Methods For Teaching Educational Paraprofessionals To Implement Behavior Management Strategies In Preschool Classrooms, Natalie Jan Slider
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined the efficacy of cost effective and sequential training methods for teaching educational paraprofessionals to implement behavior management strategies in preschool classrooms. Investigation of the effects of increasingly complex and time consuming methods of training on both paraprofessional and student behaviors were evaluated. Training methods employed included written take-home manuals and summary cards, modeling videotapes, and performance feedback. Training materials included three behavior management strategies (e.g., instruction-giving, praise, and time out) that have shown to have extensive support in the empirical literature (Brophy, 1981; Budd, Riner, & Brockman, 1983; Flanagan, Adams, & Forehand, 1979; O’Dell, Krug, Patterson, & …

True Image, Janet K. Link
True Image, Janet K. Link
LSU Master's Theses
A still-life is often the painted record of a complex arrangement of objects. My aim in making the visual portion of TRUE IMAGE is to turn this sort of still-life inside out. Rather than arranging a collection of objects and making a painted or drawn image of the set up, I made simple images of things and arranged them with actual objects into three larger tableaux. The subjects of the paintings and drawings are these: checkerboards, objects, portraits, and shadows. The subjects of the tableaux are work (LABOR), home (DOMUS), and church (ECCLESIA). Viewed as a whole the exhibition asks …
Estimation Of Living Body Weight Based On Measurements Of Anterior Superior Iliac Spine Breadth And Stature, Jaime A. Suskewicz
Estimation Of Living Body Weight Based On Measurements Of Anterior Superior Iliac Spine Breadth And Stature, Jaime A. Suskewicz
LSU Master's Theses
Standard identification criteria for creating a decedent’s biological profile typically include ancestry, sex, age, and stature, but not body weight. Body weight information may not only assist in creating a more complete biological profile but may also provide insight into other forensic considerations, such as taphonomy and body transport and disposal. The current study seeks to establish multiple regression equations for the prediction of living body weight in skeletal remains. Specifically, the measurements of anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) breadth and stature are assessed with regard to living weight. Research was carried out on both a skeletal sample and a …

The Racial Gap In Ability: From The Fifteenth Century To Grutter And Gratz, Kevin D. Brown
The Racial Gap In Ability: From The Fifteenth Century To Grutter And Gratz, Kevin D. Brown
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Justice O'Connor’s opinion for the United States Supreme Court in Grutter v. Bollinger upheld the University of Michigan Law School’s affirmative action plan. Beneficiaries of affirmative action clearly meet the necessary qualifications for admissions to selective colleges, universities, and graduate programs. But, the justifications for affirmative action articulated by Justice O'Connor implicitly recognized that underrepresented minorities with a history of discrimination are not as academically qualified as their non-Hispanic white (and Asian counterparts). Their inclusion in affirmative action plans is based on the belief that they provide enough educational and non-educational benefits to offset their academic shortcomings.
There are measurable …

LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate deterrence factors for online file-sharing by analyzing different conditions that affect compliance with the law through survey of the students in a large university in Southern U.S. The findings show that certainty of punishment, stigma of the label, knowledge of the laws and consensus with the rule negatively correlated with both actual and likely future file-sharing activities of the users
The Performance Of The Baldcypress Leafroller (Archips Goyerana Kruse, Lepidoptera: Torticidae) In Response To Fertilization, Thinning, And Genetic Variation In Host Baldcypress (Taxodium Distichum L. Richard), Crawford Wood Johnson
LSU Master's Theses
Mississippi River diversions into coastal Louisiana wetlands aim to provide nutrient inputs and slow the impacts resulting from saltwater intrusion. Baldcypress (Taxodium distichum L. Richard) exhibits significant intraspecific tolerance to salinity and is being developed for restoration projects. Two studies were conducted using five half-sibling families of baldcypress planted at two locations in southeast Louisiana to investigate the effects of nutrient additions, thinning, and phenology on the growth of the baldcypress leafroller (Archips goyerana Kruse, BCLR). In the Jeanfreau study, families were subjected to a control, low, and high level of fertilization simulating two-four years’ effects, respectively, from a Mississippi …
Thermodynamic Characterization Of Dna Binding By Type I Dna Polymerases From Thermus Aquaticus And Escherichia Coli, Kausiki Datta
Thermodynamic Characterization Of Dna Binding By Type I Dna Polymerases From Thermus Aquaticus And Escherichia Coli, Kausiki Datta
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
DNA binding of the DNA polymerase I from Thermus aquaticus (Taq and Klentaq fragment) and E. coli (Klenow fragment) have been studied as a function of [salt] and temperature in order to understand their DNA binding thermodynamics. Binding of the two different species of polymerases occurs with sub-micromolar affinities in very different salt concentration ranges. Thus, at similar [KCl] the binding of Klenow is ~ 3kcal/mol (150X) tighter than the binding of Taq/Klentaq. Linkage analysis of the [KCl] dependence of DNA binding at 25°C reveals a net release of 2-3 ions for Taq/Klentaq and 4-5 ions for Klenow. DNA binding …

Texts are contextualized¡Xtied to times, tied to places, and tied to the people who live in those times and places. This dissertation is based on a study of writing and identity set at Catholic High School in Pointe Coupee, Louisiana. For their senior English class, the six young women participating in the study produced a number of pieces of writing of various types, contrasting in genre, length, content, and register. These kinds of writing represent varying discourse practices, and it was within these practices that the young women positioned themselves or were positioned by influences in their social context. The …
The Business Judgment Rule As Abstention Doctrine, Stephen M. Bainbridge
The Business Judgment Rule As Abstention Doctrine, Stephen M. Bainbridge
Vanderbilt Law Review
The business judgment rule is corporate law's central doctrine, pervasively affecting the roles of directors, officers, and controlling shareholders. Increasingly, moreover, versions of the business judgment rule are found in the law governing the other types of business organizations, ranging from such common forms as the general partnership to such unusual ones as the reciprocal insurance exchange. Yet, curiously, there is relatively little agreement as to either the theoretical underpinnings of or policy justification for the rule. This gap in our understanding has important doctrinal implications. As this paper demonstrates, a string of recent decisions by the Delaware supreme court …
The New Look Of Shareholder Litigation: Acquisition-Oriented Class Actions, Robert B. Thompson, Randall S. Thomas
The New Look Of Shareholder Litigation: Acquisition-Oriented Class Actions, Robert B. Thompson, Randall S. Thomas
Vanderbilt Law Review
Now, however, a new form of shareholder litigation has emerged that is distinct from derivative or securities fraud claims: class action lawsuits filed under state law challenging director conduct in mergers and acquisitions. The empirical data reported in this article show that these acquisition-oriented suits are now the dominant form of corporate litigation and outnumber derivative suits by a wide margin.
Are these acquisition-oriented class actions just another deadbeat in the corporate governance debate? Should policymakers take action to cut back on the development of this new form of shareholder litigation? In this paper, we argue that, just as with …
Forum Selection In International Contract Litigation: The Role Of Judicial Discretion, Hannah Buxbaum
Forum Selection In International Contract Litigation: The Role Of Judicial Discretion, Hannah Buxbaum
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The United States is currently involved in negotiation of the Hague Convention on Exclusive Choice of Court Agreements, which would regulate the enforceability of forum-selection clauses in international contracts. That project - as well as the recent focus in globalization literature on more active judicial management of forum selection - draws attention to one unusual aspect of U.S. jurisdictional law: that dismissal on the basis of forum non conveniens is available even in cases arising out of contracts including negotiated forum selection clauses. This article examines the resulting tension between the right of contract parties to select a forum in …

O Say, Can You See: Free Expression By The Light Of Fiery Crosses, Jeannine Bell
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This Article presents a comprehensive, context-based theory which both places cross burning in its proper doctrinal framework and recognizes the history of cross burning as one of Ku Klux Klan-inspired terrorism directed at African Americans. The author prefaces critical commentary on the Supreme Court's decision in Virginia v. Black with analysis of the full landscape of cross burning cases including another issue to which others have paid little attention - the ways in which state courts have negotiated First Amendment challenges to cross burning statutes. Thoroughly examining cross burning from each of these perspectives, the Article argues that cross burning …
A Study Of The Quintet For Piano And Strings By Richard Danielpour, Myung Jin Kuh
A Study Of The Quintet For Piano And Strings By Richard Danielpour, Myung Jin Kuh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Richard Danielpour is recognized as one of the most successful and acclaimed composers today. His music is often described as neo-romantic: full of grand gestures, highly accessible, brilliantly orchestrated, and rhythmically powerful and exciting. His music is based on the traditions of European classical music; however, it also combines the American vernacular of the 20th century, including jazz, rock, and pop music. His special interests in metaphysics and non-Western culture, especially Zen Buddhism, are also reflected in his compositions. This study examines Danielpour’s Quintet for Piano and Strings, written in 1988. The work consists of three movements with the descriptive …

Flesh And Spirit Onstage: Chronotopes Of Performance In Medieval English Theatre, Gregory Lee Cavenaugh
Flesh And Spirit Onstage: Chronotopes Of Performance In Medieval English Theatre, Gregory Lee Cavenaugh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study uses Mikhail Bakhtin's chronotope, which is the informing principle of one's experience of space and time, to explore different relations among space, time, actors, and audience in medieval theatre. Relations between the material and spiritual worlds as understood in the Middle Ages are considered in the context of relations between performers and audience members with two goals. First, I explore how the ontological status of the metaworld created through performance changed in the context of specific chronotopes. Second, I explore how diverse religious discourses affected medieval modes of representation. This study posits three chronotopes of performance informing medieval …
The Evolving Role Of Lipid Rafts And Caveolae In G Protein-Coupled Receptor Signaling: Implications For Molecular Pharmacology, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Paul A. Insel
The Evolving Role Of Lipid Rafts And Caveolae In G Protein-Coupled Receptor Signaling: Implications For Molecular Pharmacology, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Paul A. Insel
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
The many components of G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signal transduction provide cells with numerous combinations with which to customize their responses to hormones, neurotransmitters, and pharmacologic agonists. GPCRs function as guanine nucleotide exchange factors for heterotrimeric (α, β, γ) G proteins, thereby promoting exchange of GTP for GDP and, in turn, the activation of ‘downstream’ signaling components. Recent data indicate that individual cells express mRNA for perhaps over 100 different GPCRs (out of a total of nearly a thousand GPCR genes), several different combinations of G-protein subunits, multiple regulators of G-protein signaling proteins (which function as GTPase activating proteins), and various …
Direct-To-Consumer Advertising Of Prescription Medicines: Framing With Imprecise Frequency Descriptors, Mikah Zangla
Direct-To-Consumer Advertising Of Prescription Medicines: Framing With Imprecise Frequency Descriptors, Mikah Zangla
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of the study was to determine how often and to what degree “imprecise frequency descriptors” are used in prescription drug print ads. These descriptors along with the side effects they describe were compared to their corresponding prescription medicine websites and analyzed to determine whether or not the general public is being misinformed and/or misled in terms of side effect warnings by current drug advertising. Content analysis of Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) prescription drug advertisements found in five of the top seven magazines most likely to be consumed by readers over age 65 was the method of investigation for this study. …

Comparison Of The Efficiency Of Utilization Of Amino Acids From Intact Protein And Amino Acids In Crystalline Form By Channel Catfish, (Ictaluras Punctatus), Amogh Arun Ambardekar
LSU Master's Theses
Two laboratory feeding trials were conducted to quantify differences in the digestibility and absorption of dietary amino acids provided in intact protein or in purified amino acid mixtures. In the first experiment, 36 channel catfish (346 ± 47 g) were force-fed one of six practical feed ingredients (blood meal, corn meal, fish meal, meat and bone meal, soybean meal or wheat middlings), or a mixture of crystalline amino acids designed to duplicate the amino acid composition of each of the practical ingredients. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) were calculated for 15 amino acids in each practical ingredient and in each amino …
"Walking The Queen's Highway": Ideology And Cultural Landscape In Nothern Ireland, Deborah J. Miller
"Walking The Queen's Highway": Ideology And Cultural Landscape In Nothern Ireland, Deborah J. Miller
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The use of public art and ritual in Northern Ireland leads to the creation of cultural landscapes heavy with symbolism – ideological landscapes – that maintain social divisions and incite conflict. Mural and curbstone painting, flag bearing, the construction of memorials, and parading are activities that inscribe messages in the landscape. This study documents the types of symbolism prevalent in Northern Irish landscapes, the meanings attributed to them, and the reactions and subsequent cultural landscape re-creations that result. Loyalist and nationalist marches that incite riots and civil disorder have disrupted and delayed peace efforts in Northern Ireland for decades. Both …
An Application Of Geographic Information Systems (Gis): The Utility Of Victim Activity Spaces In The Geographic Profiling Of Serial Killers, Charles Casey Shamblin
An Application Of Geographic Information Systems (Gis): The Utility Of Victim Activity Spaces In The Geographic Profiling Of Serial Killers, Charles Casey Shamblin
LSU Master's Theses
Today, computer technology is producing new methods of investigation into the complex nature of serial killers; among these are geographic profiles. Yet, due to the lack of proven success, budgetary constraints, and the inherent multifaceted nature of serial murder, these geographic profiles have not been completely embraced by the law enforcement community. Because of this, the academic and law enforcement communities continue to refine and develop new methods to solve serial killer cases. This thesis investigates the possibility of identifying the location of the interaction site of a serial killer and his victims using a commercial geographic information system (GIS) …
Pride And Prejudice And Proof: Quotidian Factfinding And Rules Of Evidence, Rosanna Cavallaro
Pride And Prejudice And Proof: Quotidian Factfinding And Rules Of Evidence, Rosanna Cavallaro
UC Law Journal
This Article considers the novel Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, as a work of literature that invites the reader and legal scholar to reflect on the modes of proof we use in our quotidian factfinding, and how they vary from those available to adjudicatory factflnders under existing rules of evidence. In particular, the novel allows those interested in intersections between law and literature to explore the preferencing of live testimony as against hearsay; the use of character or propensity evidence; and the balance between truthseeking and confidentiality that underlies rules of privilege. Sometimes augmenting traditional legal and social science …
Site-Directed Mutagenesis Studies Of E. Coli Biotin Carboxylase, Valerie Melissa Sloane
Site-Directed Mutagenesis Studies Of E. Coli Biotin Carboxylase, Valerie Melissa Sloane
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Acetyl-CoA carboxylase is an essential enzyme in all plants, animals, and bacterie, where it catalyzes the committed step in fatty acid synthesis. The Escherichia coli version of the enzyme has three functional components that dissociate readily: biotin carboxylase, carboxyltransferase, and a biotin carboxyl carrier protein. The biotin carboxylase component catalyzes the ATP-dependent carboxylation of biotin, using bicarbonate as the carboxylate source. Biotin carboxylase is a member of a functionally diverse superfamily of proteins known as the ATP-grasp enzymes. In the first study, four residues of biotin carboxylase, Lys 116, Lys 159, His 209, and Glu 276, were selected for site-directed …

The Sports Appeal: Are Atheletics A Viable Academic Marketing Vehicle In Higher Education?, Reagan Thomas Chenevert
LSU Master's Theses
Universities are beginning to brand themselves. The days when the doors to higher-ed opened and students flooded into the classrooms are no more. Colleges have to find ways to separate themselves from each other in a noisy marketplace. Also there is a decline in newsroom resources for academic coverage, which leaves university marketers searching for ways to communicate their messages. However, universities have another available marketing outlet, which is not seeing declining media attention: sports. College sports are a big business, which generate national media attention. The Southeastern Conference had revenues of over $100 million from the marketing of its …
