Forms Of Address And Epistolary Etiquette In The Diplomatic And Courtly Worlds Of Philip Iv Of Spain, Lynn Williams

Faculty Publications

Observance of established etiquette in the matter of forms of address is a feature of all societies in all ages. Nowhere could this be more evident than in the diplomatic and courtly worlds of Philip IV of Spain. The following extract from the entry on 'tratamiento' in the Enciclopedia Universal Ilustrada will serve to set the scene for this period in Spanish history: Contra las infracciones de las reglas sobre el tratamiento se dicto ya el 2 de Julio de 1600 por Felipe III una Pragmatica y otra en 1636 por Felipe IV disponiendo (que los que vinieren contra 10 …

Insurgency And Counterinsurgency In The 21st Century: Reconceputalizing Threat And Response, Steven Metz Dr., Raymond A. Millen Ltc Nov 2004

Insurgency And Counterinsurgency In The 21st Century: Reconceputalizing Threat And Response, Steven Metz Dr., Raymond A. Millen Ltc

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Modern insurgency warfare presents fresh challenges for the United States, which must re-conceptualize its approach to fighting such conflicts. Because the dominant characteristics of insurgency--protractedness and ambiguity--effectively stymie the American military's approach to war, the United States needs to reorient its strategic thinking. The key to success is not for the U.S. military to become better at counterinsurgency, but for the U.S. military (and other elements of the government) to be skilled at helping local security and intelligence forces become effective at it. Adapting tactics and strategies to the realities on the ground is the not only pragmatic, but also …

Shadows Of Things Past And Images Of The Future: Lessons For The Insurgencies In Our Midst, Max G. Manwaring Dr. Nov 2004

Shadows Of Things Past And Images Of The Future: Lessons For The Insurgencies In Our Midst, Max G. Manwaring Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph begins with a short discussion of contemporary insurgency. It makes the argument that, in studying terror war, guerrilla war, or any other common term for insurgency war, we find these expressions mischaracterize the activities of armed groups that are attempting to gain political control of a nation-state. The fact is that these organizations are engaged in a highly complex political-psychological war. Three key harbinger cases from which the first contemporary lessons of modern insurgency should have been learned provide the basis for the argument--Peru (1962 to date), Italy (1968-82), and Argentina (1969-79). Given that these kinds of conflict--or …

Getting Mad: Nuclear Mutual Assured Destruction, Its Origins And Practice, Henry D. Sokolski Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Getting MAD: Nuclear Mutual Assured Destruction, Its Origins and Practice is the first critical history of the intellectual roots and actual application of the strategic doctrine of nuclear mutual assured destruction or MAD. Written by the world's leading French, British, and American military policy planners and analysts, this volume examines how MAD and its emphasis on the military targeting of population centers influenced the operational plans of the major nuclear powers and states, such as Pakistan, India, and Israel. Given America's efforts to move away from MAD and the continued reliance on MAD thinking by smaller nations to help justify …

Edge-Cracked Orthotropic Bimaterial Butt Joint Under Antiplane Singularity, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Emrah Gokdag Nov 2004

Edge-Cracked Orthotropic Bimaterial Butt Joint Under Antiplane Singularity, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Emrah Gokdag

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Explicit elastic solutions are given for an edge-cracked orthotropic bimaterial butt joint under antiplane singularity of a screw dislocation and a line-force. During the procedure, conformal mapping and known dislocation solution are utilized for constructing the fundamental solution to the present problem. Stress intensity factor (SIF) and energy release rate (ERR) of the edge-cracked butt joint are given in closed-form. In limiting cases, results provided in this work cover those in literature.

Primary Ovarian Hydatid Disease In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Onnuola A. Adewunmi, Hoogar M. Basilingappa Nov 2004

Primary Ovarian Hydatid Disease In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Onnuola A. Adewunmi, Hoogar M. Basilingappa

Saudi Medical Journal

Human hydatid disease is caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Its distribution is world wide and it affects mainly the liver, but other organs could be involved. Primary involvement of pelvic organs is very rare. This is a case report of primary ovarian hydatid disease in a postmenopausal woman, diagnosed postoperatively. Surgical excision was adequate. Ultrasonography, particularly high frequency trans-vaginal, computed tomography scan and, more recently, magnetic resonance imaging are more frequently used in the diagnosis of Echinococcus cyst. They appear more reliable than many of the old tests of varying sensitivities. Whereas, there are anecdotal reports of obstetric and gynecological manifestations …

Access To Quality Care: Links Between Evidence, Nursing Language, And Informatics, Beth Ann Swan Phd, Crnp, Norma M. Lang Phd, Rn, Faan, Frcn, Anne M. Mcginley Phd, Crnp

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

Despite evidence on nursing’s contribution to the quality of care, much of what nurses “do” remains essentially invisible.

It is vital to recognize the need for a paradigm shift in nursing that utilizes new informatics tools required for optimum use of evidence related to the delivery of quality nursing care.

Embedding nursing language within informatics structures is essential to make the work of nurses visible, and articulate evidence about the quality and value of nursing in the care of patients, groups, and populations.

Improving Instructional Practice: The Value Of Classroom Goal Teams As Measured By Elementary Teachers' Perceptions, Debra J. Easton Rodenburg Nov 2004

Improving Instructional Practice: The Value Of Classroom Goal Teams As Measured By Elementary Teachers' Perceptions, Debra J. Easton Rodenburg

Student Work

Student achievement is in the forefront of education as never before. Educators, parents, business leaders, community members, and politicians are all actively watching reports of student achievement. Wong (2003) found in more than 200 studies, the only way to improve student achievement is with a knowledgeable and skillful teacher. The expertise of a teacher is a critical variable in effecting student achievement (Marzano, 2003). In this study, Classroom Goals Team Project (CGTP) was utilized as a professional development program to bring about improvements in teaching and learning in an effort to positively impact student achievement. The CGTP, implemented in a …

Instructional Methods And Efficacy Of Teachers Trained In Differentiated Instruction, Patricia A. Crum Nov 2004

Instructional Methods And Efficacy Of Teachers Trained In Differentiated Instruction, Patricia A. Crum

Student Work

This study examined the instructional methods and efficacy of teachers involved in a two-part district staff development project in differentiated instruction. Responses from 194 kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers on a self-perception survey were collected after an initial district staff training and implementation and again after involvement in a second teacher centered district staff development plan in differentiated instruction with implementation time. The data collected were analyzed to determine what instructional methods and efficacy the staff displayed and to determine whether a change in teachers' perceptions occurred during the 9-month period following the second district plan.
