Relationships Between Non-Linguistic Variables In Second Language Acquisition And The Attained English Language Proficiency Of Taiwanese University Students, Chihming Hsieh
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Second language acquisition (SLA) research, the study of how people learn to communicate in a language other than their native language, encompasses a broad range of questions from a wide variety of perspectives. One of the most widely recognized facts about SLA was that some individuals are more successful in learning a second language than are others (Gass & Selinker, 2001). Students with the same initial linguistic abilities, who receive the same education, even in the same institution, often do not achieve the same linguistic competency levels at program completion (Dornyei, 1998). This phenomenon cannot be explained purely by linguistic …

A Sensitivity Analysis Of A Heuristic Model Used For The Placement Allocation Of Utilities In Transportation Right-Of-Way Corridors, Steve Clarence Christian
A Sensitivity Analysis Of A Heuristic Model Used For The Placement Allocation Of Utilities In Transportation Right-Of-Way Corridors, Steve Clarence Christian
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The requirements for public utility systems in the United States of America have grown enormously over the years triggering a tremendous shortage for space available to public utilities on and within transportation right-of-ways (ROW). Overcrowding and improper location of utilities has resulted in problems such as, damage to infrastructure, traffic accidents and, interruption of service to customers. The project titled, "Optimal Placement of Utilities within FDOT Right-of-Way", sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and currently being investigated at the University of South Florida, presents a decision-making heuristic aimed at developing a better utility placement allocation system (Kranc et. …

Microglia Activation In Alzheimer's Disease, Kirk Phillip Townsend
Microglia Activation In Alzheimer's Disease, Kirk Phillip Townsend
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The work detailed in this dissertation has an overarching theme of modulating microglia activation in both in vivo and in vitro models relevant to AD. The premise is that understanding microglia function in this context may lead to a better understanding of AD pathogenesis and thus to effective therapeutic interventions. In chapter 3, we employ a well-defined model of microglia activation whereby the intraperitoneal delivery of LPS results in CNS microglia activation and TNF-α production. Having previously identified that CD45 signaling pathways antagonized microglia TNF-α production in vitro and given that immunotherapy with anti-CD45 antibodies are already in clinical trials …
Analysis Of Flow In A 3d Chamber And A 2d Spray Nozzle To Approximate The Exiting Jet Free Surface, Chin Tung Hong
Analysis Of Flow In A 3d Chamber And A 2d Spray Nozzle To Approximate The Exiting Jet Free Surface, Chin Tung Hong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation is to analyze the flow pattern of cooling fluids in the 3D "twister-effect" mixing chamber and to approximate the free surface behaviors exiting the 2D spray nozzle. The cone angle and free surface height located at the end of the free surface are two significant factors to determine the spraying area on a heated plane. This process is a reasonable representation of many industrial cooling application. The whole system consists of 4 inlet tubes connected to the top of the mixing chamber, and the spray nozzle is located under the chamber. Four different refrigerants, like …

A Learner-Centered And Participtory Approach To Teaching Community Adult Esl, Haley Lynn Wiggins
Theses and Dissertations
This MA project examines the creation, implementation, and effectiveness of the guidebook, Moving Forward: A Learner-Centered and Participatory Approach to Teaching Community Adult ESL, designed to help adult English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers base their classes on the specific needs of community adult education students. This guidebook was created in response to the need for lesson plans and activities that help teachers focus on learner needs. The activities in the guidebook are based on the National Institute for Literacy's (NIFL) adult literacy initiative, Equipped for the Future (EFF) because it focuses on the tasks adults must perform …
An Exploratory Study That Examines Perceptions, By The Regulated Community, On The Effectiveness Of Air Quality Permitting For Clark County, By The Department Of Air Quality And Environmental Management, Scott Jelinek
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Clean Air Act of 1970 (CAA) made the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) responsible for establishing and maintaining federal programs that control air quality. In turn, each state was delegated responsibility for air quality within its borders, although this responsibility may be shared with Native Americans or tribal lands. In many states, jurisdiction has been delegated to regional or local agencies that are then responsible for air quality in their respective air basins. Even though terrain or water bodies define the physical boundaries of air basins, they are usually designated by County boundaries for regulatory convenience (Wooley, David R., 1997).

Real-Time Registration And Display Of Confocal Microscope Imagery For Multiple-Band Analysis, Scott E. Budge, A.M. Mayampurath, J.C. Solinsky
Real-Time Registration And Display Of Confocal Microscope Imagery For Multiple-Band Analysis, Scott E. Budge, A.M. Mayampurath, J.C. Solinsky
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Multiple images acquired in real-time from a confocal microscope in different illumination wavebands are used to construct a three-dimensional understanding of living cell signal propagation. Registration, fusion, and display of these images are performed in real-time using field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology to allow the biological scientist to observe time critical signaling processes as they occur. The registration and display system operates at a rate of up to 15 frames/s, and performs dark offset correction and noise reduction, followed by non-linear correction for lens warp and focal plane tilt, and finally correction for spatial mismatch between the different wavebands. …
Ocb Through Cultural Lenses: Exploring The Relations Among Personality, Ocb And Cultural Values, Xian Xu
Ocb Through Cultural Lenses: Exploring The Relations Among Personality, Ocb And Cultural Values, Xian Xu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study attempted to explore the role cultural values play on the relations between personality variables and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Specifically, Schwartz' cultural values of hierarchy and egalitarianism and the personality predictors of conscientiousness and agreeableness were examined. It was hypothesized that hierarchy and egalitarianism would moderate the relationship between conscientiousness, agreeableness and OCB. Specific hypotheses concerning the direction of the influence on particular dimensions of OCB were tested. Data were collected from multiple organizations resulting in a sample of 62 pairs of employee-supervisor dyads from the U.S. and 64 pairs from China. Results indicated that agreeableness correlated …
