Hawk Link Retention Program, Robert N. Page Jr., Juan Izaguirre

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

Parents, faculty, and staff have preached the importance of the student's first year in college. Critical as this time is, many students view their freshman year as a time to experience everything that they can get involved in that is associated with college life. Unfortunately, some of these experiences are not as productive and can lead to a difficult first year which they will constantly battle the rest of their college days.

Why Don't They Stay? Exploring Supervisors' Level Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Employee Perceptions Of Fairness In The Workplace, Gina S. Matkin

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

"My supervisor is nice, but she/he just doesn't understand me!" This statement may help explain some of the mixed success for predominantly white workplaces in retaining people of color. This presentation outlines a dissertation study exploring the relationship between intercultural sensitivity of leaders, and followers' ratings of workplace fairness. Demographic similarity or difference between supervisor and supervisee will also be considered as a moderating variable. Findings may help us to better understand how workplace relationships impact issues related to retention.

The Welcome Theory: An Explanation For The Decreasing Number Of African Americans In Baseball, David C. Ogden

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

The percentage of African Americans on the rosters of major league baseball teams is at a 30-year low, while the percentage of Caucasian players in the major leagues has remained relatively stable. Research indicates that the number of African Americans will continue to drop. The Welcome Theory uses several theoretical perspectives to explore why African Americans have turned away from baseball and embraced other sports, such as basketball. The theory has implications for designing sports programs that socialize youth into sports.

Engaging Non-State Actors In The Fight Against Landmines: A Key To Negotiating Peace In Colombia, Elisabeth Reusse-Decrey

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Today, one of the populations in the world that suffers the most from landmine use by armed non-state actors (NSAs) is the population of Colombia. Since 2003, Geneva Call, a humanitarian, independent and neutral international organisation dedicated to engaging NSAs in a total ban against anti-personnel landmines, has established a line of communication with Colombian armed groups.
