The Feminist Biographical Method In Psychological Research, Natalee Popadiuk Sep 2004

The Feminist Biographical Method In Psychological Research, Natalee Popadiuk

The Qualitative Report

The feminist biographical method is an in-depth interpretive methodology that is useful for research in the field of psychology. I believe that this qualitative method is an excellent tool for analyzing individual narratives of participants lives in relation to the larger cultural matrix of the society in which they live. Although an oral interview is often the primary strategy employed for data collection in this methodology, other sources of information such as personal journals, official documents, and cultural texts are also exciting additions to the research. The strengths of the feminist biographical method include the depth, context, and meaning found …

Exploring Transnational Identities In Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost, Victoria Cook Sep 2004

Exploring Transnational Identities In Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost, Victoria Cook

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Victoria Cook, in "Exploring Transnational Identities in Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost," addresses issues of identity raised in the narrative of Michael Ondaatje's novel Anil's Ghost. Cook's paper is a close analysis of Ondaatje's novel, paying particular attention to the way in which Ondaatje examines identity as both a "construct" and a "process." The approach used is one that draws on postcolonial theory and takes a "transnational" perspective. Cook argues that Ondaatje's text moves beyond the concept of a postcolonial literature of "resistance" into an area that requires a theory of process rather than product. Transnationalism is shown here to be just …

Where Have All The Native Fish Gone? The Fate Of Fish That Lewis And Clark Encountered On The Lower Columbia River, Virginia L. Butler Sep 2004

Where Have All The Native Fish Gone? The Fate Of Fish That Lewis And Clark Encountered On The Lower Columbia River, Virginia L. Butler

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

As part of a special issue of the 'Oregon Historical Quarterly,' discusses the native species of fish in the lower Columbia River described by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1805-06. They identified red charr, salmon trout, sturgeon, anchovy, skeet, and other fish that Indians caught and used as trade items with the Corps of Discovery. However, editors of the Lewis and Clark journals have often erred in identifying the fish Lewis and Clark described; the challenge in identifying anadromous fish lies in changing coloration, markings, and examination of habitat. There has been a drastic decline of native fish since …

Building A Model Of Campus Diversity: An Organization-As-The-Individual Based Approach, Ian Spencer Ray Aug 2004

Building A Model Of Campus Diversity: An Organization-As-The-Individual Based Approach, Ian Spencer Ray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diversity is a vital concept when engaging with modern social science research and among higher education practitioners. Despite the pervasive discourse surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, quantification of diversity remains a challenge across the social sciences. This study proposes a new conceptual framework, applies the framework to the quantification of diversity and measurement of its impacts. Further, this study demonstrates the robustness of the new conceptual framework alongside the positive impacts of diversity on institutional outcomes.

The Organization-As-The-Individual (OATI) framework arises from an integration of the social and biological sciences. The framework argues that humans, as biological organisms, …

Merrill's Code For Classifiers, Anita Coleman

Faculty Publications

This Microsoft PowerPoint presentation of 25 slides includes several pictures and quotations about and from the "Code for Classifiers: Principles governing the consistent placing of books in a system of classification" by William Stetson Merrill. Coleman briefly explores the problems of classification presented in the Code, the model of collaboration that was used to develop the principles documented in the various editions of the Code, and how the Code can be used to develop a federated classification (classifying) model for digital library organization. The discussion also makes it clear that early American library classification was not just a "mark and …

Teacher And Student Attitudes Towards Multicultural Issues, Nathan Taraska Aug 2004

Teacher And Student Attitudes Towards Multicultural Issues, Nathan Taraska

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this research were to (a) measure the multicultural attitudes of teachers in a secondary setting, grades 9-12 (n=6); (b) measure the multicultural attitudes of the students in those teachers' classes (n=92); and (c) determine whether these samples of students and teachers have statistically similar multicultural attitudes that indicate a positive relationship. Teachers and students demonstrated largely positive attitudes towards multicultural issues. A series of t-tests revealed the attitudes of the two groups were statistically similar on 12 of the 13 questionnaire items regarding multicultural issues. Implications for schools, teachers, and multicultural education in …

Intersexuality And Universal Marriage, Michael L. Rosin Aug 2004

Intersexuality And Universal Marriage, Michael L. Rosin

ExpressO

The proposed Federal Marriage Amendment would raise to the constitutional level the traditional understanding of marriage as the union of one woman and one man. In so doing it would raise to the constitutional level the questions of who is a woman and who is a man. There is currently no settled case or statute law answering these questions. A 1979 Australian annulment case declaring a husband with XX sex chromosomes to be neither a man nor a woman demonstrates the law’s inability to deal with the physically intersexed. Legal scholars defending the traditional view of marriage cite 19th century …

Some Statistical Contributions To The Analysis Of Human Genome Diversity And Evolution., Analabha Basu Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The work embodied in this thesis pertains to human population genetics. In particular, the overarching goals of this thesis are to contribute to the understanding of genomic diversity of human populations and to the development of statistical methods for making inferences in genome diversity studies. With these two goals in mind, we have carried out a detailed statistical analysis of genomic data on a large number of ethnic populations of India, generated in the laboratory of the Anthropology & Human Genetics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Additionally, wherever relevant, we have compared our data with those collated from the published …

Embedded Psychology In Mens Rea Determinations: Systematic Differences Between Legal Standards And Reasoning Processes Across Cultures, Justin D. Levinson Aug 2004

Embedded Psychology In Mens Rea Determinations: Systematic Differences Between Legal Standards And Reasoning Processes Across Cultures, Justin D. Levinson

ExpressO

The mens rea inquiry asks jurors to determine a defendant’s mental state at a particular moment in time. Social and cultural psychological research, however, suggests that jurors (and people generally) may not understand others’ mental states in ways consistent with legal standards. In this article, the author theoretically and empirically examines (across culture) how jurors understand defendants’ mental states, investigating whether they can apply mental state inquiries in a manner consistent with domestic and international policy goals. After testing several mental state variables, the author finds that the law’s hierarchy of mental states frequently does not match jurors’ psychological processes. …

The Duchess' Privy Chamber: Early Modern Marriage Law And The Eviction Of Women From The Public Sphere In John Webster's "Duchess Of Malfi" , Carla Spivack

ExpressO

The Duchess’ Privy Chamber: Early Modern Marriage Law and the Eviction of Women from the Public Sphere in The Duchess of Malfi (argues that the symbolism in Webster’s Duchess of Malfi systemically undoes the iconography of Elizabethan power; that images taken from the legal descriptions of marriage work in the play to replace the image of woman as political ruler in the public sphere with woman as wife sequestered in the private sphere).

Do Patents Facilitate Financing In The Software Industry?, Ronald J. Mann Aug 2004

Do Patents Facilitate Financing In The Software Industry?, Ronald J. Mann

ExpressO

This paper is the first part of a wide-ranging study of the role of intellectual property in the software industry. Unlike previous papers, which focus primarily on software patents – which generally are held by firms that are not software firms – this paper provides a thorough and contextually grounded description of the role that patents actually play in the software industry itself.

The bulk of the paper considers the pros and cons of patents in the software industry. On the positive side, the paper starts by emphasizing the difficulties that pre-revenue startups face in obtaining any value from patents. …

Information Technology For Detecting Medication Errors And Adverse Drug Events, James G. Anderson Aug 2004

Information Technology For Detecting Medication Errors And Adverse Drug Events, James G. Anderson

RCHE Publications

It is estimated that over three-quarters of a million people are injured or die in hospitals ‎each year from adverse drug events (ADE’s). The majority of medical errors result form ‎poorly designed healthcare systems rather than from negligence on the part of healthcare ‎providers. In general, healthcare systems rely on voluntary reporting, which seriously ‎underestimates the number of medication errors and ADE’s by as much as 90%. This ‎paper reviews the causes and impact of medication errors and ADE's. It also reports ‎studies that have used information technology (IT) to detect and prevent medication ‎errors and ADE’s. Significant reduction of …
