Wild Justice And Fair Play: Cooperation, Forgiveness, And Morality In Animals, Marc Bekoff
Wild Justice And Fair Play: Cooperation, Forgiveness, And Morality In Animals, Marc Bekoff
Ethology Collection
In this paper I argue that we can learn much about ‘wild justice’ and the evolutionary origins of social morality – behaving fairly – by studying social play behavior in group-living animals, and that interdisciplinary cooperation will help immensely. In our efforts to learn more about the evolution of morality we need to broaden our comparative research to include animals other than non-human primates. If one is a good Darwinian, it is premature to claim that only humans can be empathic and moral beings. By asking the question ‘What is it like to be another animal?’ we can discover rules …

Reconsidering The Auricular Surface As An Indicator Of Age At Death, Daniel L. Osborne, Tal L. Simmons, Stephen P. Nawrocki
Reconsidering The Auricular Surface As An Indicator Of Age At Death, Daniel L. Osborne, Tal L. Simmons, Stephen P. Nawrocki
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Using standards established by Lovejoy et al. (1) to estimate age at death from auricular surface morphology, 266 individuals of documented age, sex, and ancestry from the Terry and Bass Donated Collections were scored. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicates that for the factors that could be controlled, age is the sole influence on auricular surface morphology. Ancestry and sex had no significant effect on auricular phase expression. No evidence of secular changes was detected when comparing the Terry Collection (early 20th century) to the Bass Collection (later 20th century). Pearson correlations reveal that several of the subcomponents of the auricular …

On The U.S. Aversion To Ritual Behavior And The Vocation Of The Liturgical Theologian, Martin F. Connell
On The U.S. Aversion To Ritual Behavior And The Vocation Of The Liturgical Theologian, Martin F. Connell
Theology Faculty Publications
This three-part essay reflects on the vocation of liturgical theologians in a culture in which there is a general antipathy toward the influence of religious rituals on personal formation and decision-making.1 Part ι considers a few foundational nineteenth-century authors of the American Renaissance for reflections on the aversion to Christian ritual behavior. Part 2 takes up the sermons of a few nineteenth-century revivalist preachers. Part 3 suggests five challenges to liturgical theologians who teach and think in the complex social and religious environment of the United States.

Listening Spaces: Audiophiles, Technology And Domestic Music Listening, Brian O'Neill
Listening Spaces: Audiophiles, Technology And Domestic Music Listening, Brian O'Neill
Conference Papers
This paper examines the interrelationship of technology, space and identity as exhibited in the domestic music listening practices of the audiophile. Music listening in domestic contexts provides both a physical and imaginary space of cultural consumption. The paper describes work in progress into phenomenological aspects of listening, practices of audio technology use in domestic contexts, and features of identity formation based on a qualitative study of hi-fi listeners. Technological and cultural change in the production of aural soundscapes and processes of reception provide the backdrop to the current study. Three main issues are addressed. Firstly, the promise of digital technology …

What Mothers Want: Welfare Reform And Maternal Desire, Patricia K. Jennings
What Mothers Want: Welfare Reform And Maternal Desire, Patricia K. Jennings
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In this study I use participant observations,face-to-face interviews, and focus group interviews to examine how women on welfare read and negotiate culture-of-poverty discourse and the imagery that this discourse spawns. I spoke with two groups of young single mothers receiving welfare. The first group included young mothers between the ages of 18 and 23 who were attending high school in a community-based program that served women on welfare. The second group included mothers in their early to mid 20's who were attending either a local two-year college or research university. Education was a path of resistance for the women in …

A Journey With The End In Mind: An Examination Of How Advance Planning May Influence End-Of-Life Decisions, Elizabeth Lada Morse
A Journey With The End In Mind: An Examination Of How Advance Planning May Influence End-Of-Life Decisions, Elizabeth Lada Morse
Student Scholarship
There are many sociocultural and economic factors that shape discussions about treatment options for terminally ill patients. These factors include access to lifeprolonging medical options, societal priorities regarding the allocation of limited health care resources, cost constraints of payers, and societal consensus that patient autonomy underpins lifesustaining treatment decisions. The focus of this study is primarily directed to issues of endoflife care decisions as they relate to advance directives (ADs) and palliative care. It is argued that when death is expected or foreseeable, advance care planning has value for the individual, family, organization and community. It is debatable whether ADs …
Prickly Pear Cactus And Pastoralism In Southwest Madagascar, Jeffrey C. Kaufmann
Prickly Pear Cactus And Pastoralism In Southwest Madagascar, Jeffrey C. Kaufmann
Faculty Publications
Madagascar's Mahafale cattle raisers have adopted several species of the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia) into their subsistence patterns. Their use of Opuntia has had the economic effects of both sedentary and transhumant intensification. It lengthens the stay of pastoralists at their villages and structures the timing of their seasonal migration to distant pastures.
Cone Beam Ct And Digital Radiography. A Comparative Study Of P/A Cephalometrics., Michael John Erickson
Cone Beam Ct And Digital Radiography. A Comparative Study Of P/A Cephalometrics., Michael John Erickson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine if Rickett's posterio-anterior (P/A) cephalogram measurements could be obtained from Cone Beam Computerized Tomographic (CBCT) images taken on the NewTom QR-DVT 9000™.
Fifteen frontal cephalometric radiographs were chosen for good image quality, with no regard for patient age or gender. Each cephalogram was traced three times by the same operator using ZeroBase™ software. Landmarks were located and measured according to the Rickett's frontal analysis technique. Methods were devised for obtaining analogous measurements using CBCT images on the same group of patients.
Measurements obtained using CBCT correlated well with those obtained using the …

A Survey Of Self-Reported Mental Illness Among Adult Inmates In Nebraska, Cristin B. O'Rourke
A Survey Of Self-Reported Mental Illness Among Adult Inmates In Nebraska, Cristin B. O'Rourke
Student Work
This study used the results of mailed surveys to estimate the number of adults incarcerated in Nebraska prisons that have mental illness. It explored possible associations between the variables of gender, race, and mental illness. Survey questions, as well as the criteria for determining the presence or absence of mental illness, were based on a Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) Special Report (Ditton, 1999). In this survey sample (S=421), approximately 58% of incarcerated adults identified themselves as mental ill (according to BJS criteria), a percentage significantly higher than the 16% reported by the BJS. Several possible reasons for the discrepancy …
Writing Truth As Fiction: Administrators Think About Their Work Through A Different Lens, Diane Ketelle
Writing Truth As Fiction: Administrators Think About Their Work Through A Different Lens, Diane Ketelle
The Qualitative Report
This article argues that school administrators can learn about themselves through fictionalizing their real world experience. Examples of this writing form are offered in the text to illustrate the form and possible function of this type of work. The author presents this alternate writing form as a reflective tool that can assist professionals in learning about themselves and as a result resituate themselves in the world of leadership.
