Mediational Tool Use And Strategic Behaviors During Collaborative Online Reading: A Microgenetic Case Study Of Beginning Students Of German, Sabine Siekmann

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated collaborative online reading from a Sociocultural Theory (SCT) perspective. Building on, yet transcending, research into learning strategies, the research focused on the concepts of mediational tool use, strategic behavior, and patterns of dialogic engagement of college student dyads as they completed a series of three collaborative WebQuests in a beginning German as a Foreign Language (GFL) class.

On-screen actions and verbal interaction of six dyads of beginning GFL students were recorded during three short-term, collaborative WebQuests. Full motion screen recordings were transcribed, and relevant episodes were coded for mediational tool use and strategic behaviors.

All dyads used …

Social And Behavioral Aspect Of Mother’S Health Behaviors And Neonatal Health: Risk Factor Analysis Of Neonatal Septicemia In Urban Slums Of Muntinlupa, Philippines, Chisaki Sato

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Reducing neonatal mortality can contribute to the further reduction of infant mortality rates in international health as it is responsible for about half of the mortality rate for those underfive today. The situation of infant mortality in the Philippines is no exception to this global trend. This study of the social demographic aspects of sepsis neonatorum in the Philippines has explored the conditions of the urban environment, and local cultures related to newborn illnesses and the patterns of health seeking behaviors of urban poor mothers which can affect the survival of newborns. The mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods …

The Role Of The Environmental Archaeologist In The Study And Reconstruction Of Cave Palaeoclimate, Maria Gkioni Jan 2004

The Role Of The Environmental Archaeologist In The Study And Reconstruction Of Cave Palaeoclimate, Maria Gkioni

International Journal of Speleology

Man and environment are engaged in a continuous battle to impose themselves on one another. The results are found in environmental modifications or climatic oscillations and, as far as man is concerned, in the different character of cultural remains. Man responds to environmental changes by migrating or evolving technological innovations, both of which leave important remains that the archaeologist is called on to recognise and interpret during and after an excavation. They both also reflect the sociocultural responses to climatic stress. This paper refers to a specific case study, caves, which housed man and his activities from the very early …

Improving Laws, Declining World: The Tort Of Contamination, William H. Rodgers, Jr. Jan 2004

Improving Laws, Declining World: The Tort Of Contamination, William H. Rodgers, Jr.

Articles

This article considers nature's "baseline" through the lens of modern environmental laws. We measure this "baseline" like never before and are proud of our databases on fish advisories, beach closures, and impaired water bodies, to mention a few. The ubiquitous legal response to these measures of environmental decline is the public warning "Don't Eat the Fish" and "Don't Drink the Water."

This article assesses the function, utility, and purpose of these public warnings and finds them wanting. Their principal value is that they serve as measures of lost natural capital and harbingers of shifting baselines.

Our descriptive journey leaves us …

Coastal Lakes Aquatic Plant Survey Report, Mary Pfauth, Mark Sytsma Jan 2004

Coastal Lakes Aquatic Plant Survey Report, Mary Pfauth, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Invasive, non-indigenous plants can degrade water quality and fish habitat when they invade lakes, ponds, and streams. Changes in plant community architecture in lakes due to invasion by canopy-forming invasive aquatic plants can result in loss of native plant biodiversity and reduction of the structural complexity of the underwater habitat. Differences in photosynthetic biochemistry between non-indigenous and native plants can result in large diurnal pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations.

An Economic Analysis Of Rice Production In Mwea Irrigation Scheme, Jonh Ngige Kuria Jan 2004

An Economic Analysis Of Rice Production In Mwea Irrigation Scheme, Jonh Ngige Kuria

All Master’s Theses

This study aimed at comparing the economics of rice production for two different groups of farmers in Mwea Irrigation Scheme (MIS). One group is under the management of Mwea Multi-Purpose Rice Growers (MMRG) and grows a single crop of rice in a year without rotation. The other group is composed of the sons and daughters of MMRG tenant farmers and grows a double crop of rice in a year. It is however not clear which of the two production systems is efficient or realises higher returns to farmers. The objectives of the study were: (i) to identify major resources used …

Efficacy Of Xanthopimpla Stemmator Against Selected Lepidopteran Pest And Its Interaction With Pupal Endoparasitoid Pediobius Furvus In Graminaceous Plants In Kenya, Jamleck Muturi Jan 2004

Efficacy Of Xanthopimpla Stemmator Against Selected Lepidopteran Pest And Its Interaction With Pupal Endoparasitoid Pediobius Furvus In Graminaceous Plants In Kenya, Jamleck Muturi

All Master’s Theses

Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is a major pest and a threat to cultivated poaceous plants in many parts of Africa. The adverse ecological and environmental effects as well as the cost of chemical insecticides commonly used in its control, besides its limitations makes it necessary to explore environmentally friendly control methods. Classical biological control is one important approach in the . control of exotic pests. A larval parasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was introduced in Kenya from Pakistan against C. partellus. Though, it has reduced borer density in overall by 32% and by 55% for C. partellus, its …

Editorial: The European Union As A Constitutional Experiment, George Bermann Jan 2004

Editorial: The European Union As A Constitutional Experiment, George Bermann

Faculty Scholarship

In the constellation of international governance regimes, the European Union occupies a singular place, and not merely because it has recently engaged in the process of drafting a document whose title includes the words A Constitution for Europe'. Even if that particular document, or any such document, were never to see the light of day as a fully adopted and ratified instrument (an eventuality I consider to be unlikely), the EU will already have been constitutionalised, albeit in a fashion unfamiliar to those who, like most of us, are accustomed to the constitutions of Nation States. To claim that the …

Two 1/2-Year-Old Children Use Animacy And Syntax To Learn A New Noun, Jane B. Childers, C. H. Echols Jan 2004

Two 1/2-Year-Old Children Use Animacy And Syntax To Learn A New Noun, Jane B. Childers, C. H. Echols

Psychology Faculty Research

We examine how attention to animacy information may contribute to children's developing knowledge of language. This research extends beyond prior research in that children were shown dynamic events with novel entities, and were asked not only to comprehend sentences but to use sentence structure to infer the meaning of a new word. In a 4 × 3 design, animacy status (e.g., animate agent, inanimate patient) and labeling syntax (agent, patient, nonlabel control) were varied. Across most events, 21/2-year-old participants responded as if they expected animate entities to be named. However, in a prototypical (animate agent-inanimate patient) event condition, children responded …

Be Careful What You Wish For: Legal Sanctions And Public Safety Among Adolescent Offenders In Juvenile And Criminal Court, Jeffrey Fagan, Aaron Kupchik, Akiva Liberman Jan 2004

Be Careful What You Wish For: Legal Sanctions And Public Safety Among Adolescent Offenders In Juvenile And Criminal Court, Jeffrey Fagan, Aaron Kupchik, Akiva Liberman

Faculty Scholarship

Three decades of legislative activism have resulted in a broad expansion of states' authority to transfer adolescent offenders from juvenile to criminal (adult) courts. At the same time that legislatures have broadened the range of statutes and lowered the age thresholds for eligibility for transfer, states also have reallocated discretion away from judges and instituted simplified procedures that permit prosecutors to elect whether adolescents are prosecuted and sentenced in juvenile or criminal court. These developments reflect popular and political concerns that relatively lenient or attenuated punishment in juvenile court violates proportionality principles for serious crimes committed by adolescents, and is …

Dig Deep: From Down Under, So Shall I Emerge, Lori Ann Dale Jan 2004

Dig Deep: From Down Under, So Shall I Emerge, Lori Ann Dale

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"Dig Deep: From Down Under So Shall I Emerge" is a celebration of who I am; culturally, spiritually, and historically. This body of ceramic sculptures, inclusive of five connected works, has allowed me to better understand myself, my surroundings, and my purpose in life. Through talking to other African American women my age, I have come to realize we are all dealing with similar feelings of displacement. Some stereotypes rooted in oppression have depicted Black Women as being loud angry and having negative attitudes. So being aware of such stereotypes, in the presence of other cultures many Black Women find …

Surface Electromyography Characterization Of The Local Twitch Response Elected By Trigger Point Injection And Snapping Palpation In Myofascial Pain Patients, Pei Feng Lim

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Local twitch responses (LTRs) can be elicited by snapping palpation of myofascial trigger points (TrP) or TrP injections. Objective: To characterize the LTR elicited by TrP injection and snapping palpation on surface electromyography (sEMG) in subjects with myofascial pain in 14 female subjects. Methods: Surface EMG electrodes were placed around the TrP and a control site on the trapezius muscle. Then the following protocol was carried out: tension and contraction of the ipsilateral trapezius muscle, baseline resting activity (five minutes), snapping palpation of the TrP and the control sites, TrP injection, and final resting activity (five minutes). The following data …
