The Application Of Proteomics To Pseudomonas Putida F1, Han Hoang
The Application Of Proteomics To Pseudomonas Putida F1, Han Hoang
Theses
Through years of technology development, the drug industry has been able to synthesize many valuable medicines to provide better health care. However, any time a new medication (or industrial chemical for that matter) is made; it must be tested to ensure that it is not carcinogenic. For years, scientists have worked to design a screening method that is fast, efficient, and reliable. Currently, the most widely-used method used is the Ames test [1]. This test has both strengths and weaknesses which will be discussed. In this project, Two Dimensional Electrophoresis (2DE) is used to monitor protein expression in Pseudomonas putida …
Emotional Recogition Ability Among Incarcerated Youth, Aubrey S. Elmore
Emotional Recogition Ability Among Incarcerated Youth, Aubrey S. Elmore
Theses
The purpose of this study was to consider emotional recognition ability among incarcerated youth. Specifically, thirty-eight inmates who were eligible for a Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) under New York State law participated in the study. Participants were administered Ekman's facial discrimination task (1976), the Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form (SRM-SF; Gibbs, Basinger, &Fuller, 1992), and an Emotional Intelligence Survey (Schutte et al., 1998). Results showed the incarcerated youth were less accurate in identifying emotions from facial expressions than were non-incarcerated young adults. Further, incarcerated youth with identified learning disabilities were even less accurate in their ability to recognize emotions than …
Running Head: Trademark Law And Keyword Advertising, Elizabeth Warner
Running Head: Trademark Law And Keyword Advertising, Elizabeth Warner
Theses
The growth of the Internet as a commercial medium has brought about new concerns in terms of the future of intellectual property law. The newest form of advertising, keyword advertising, has created much controversy within the legal system. In the latest case, Google, Inc. v. American Wallpaper and Blind Factory, Google has requested that courts make a decision as to what constitutes infringement in terms of the sale of keywords for advertising on the Internet. The case is still in pending process. Through an economic analysis of trademarks and advertising on the Internet, this paper seeks to demonstrate that the …

Effects Of Emphysema And Chronic Hypoxemia On Skeletal Muscle Oxygen Supply And Demand, John D. Lowman Jr.
Effects Of Emphysema And Chronic Hypoxemia On Skeletal Muscle Oxygen Supply And Demand, John D. Lowman Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Skeletal muscle dysfunction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition in which peripheral skeletal muscle undergoes myopathic changes which impair muscle function, limit physical performance, and can lead to significant disability. While the etiology of the dysfunction is unknown, this study was conducted to test the hypothesis that chronic hypoxemia leads to alterations in oxygen transport and muscle function. A primary objective was to validate elastase-induced emphysema in rats as an animal model of skeletal muscle dysfunction in COPD.Arterial blood gases were used to determine the severity of hypoxemia and sodium dodecyl sulfate- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used …
Pcr Detection Of Streptococcus Mutans And Streptococcus Sobrinus In Dental Plaque Samples From Low, Moderate, And High Caries Risk Children, Ajit A. Patel
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to correlate the presence of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus with the incidence of dental caries in children as detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Methods: Subjects between the ages 2 to 16 years of age were used in this study. After the subjects received a dental examination, dental plaque samples were collected by rubbing a toothpick on the buccal surface of the most posterior tooth in each quadrant of the mouth. Children were grouped into low, moderate, and high caries risk categories by two different Caries Risk Assessment Tools (CAT 1 and …
Surface Characteristics Of Bacillus Spores, Darlene Danette Sabio
Surface Characteristics Of Bacillus Spores, Darlene Danette Sabio
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid isolation and identification of spores from various environmental samples is necessitated because anthrax spores can be used as biological weapons. The hydrophobic nature of spores may allow for their rapid concentration and partial purification from contaminating materials. In this study, spores from four taxonomic groups of Bacillaceae were isolated, purified and characterized for hydrophobicity by hexadecane partitioning, surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy, and steady-state fluorescence by spectroscopy. The morphology of spores was similar within taxonomic groups and dissimilar between groups. Spore hydrophobicity ranged from 0.3% to 65% and all spores had fluorescence emission peaks at 335 nm and …
The Transformation Of Electricity In My Brain, Claire Watkins
The Transformation Of Electricity In My Brain, Claire Watkins
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an exciting and enthralling story about the history of the world as seen through the eyes of Claire Watkins. The story takes place in the dusty corners of her art studio in the old confederate capital, Richmond, Virginia. Ms. Watkins leads her audience through such unsuspecting places as her brain, the life of an African Dung Beetle, the center of an atom and the dark reaches of outer space. The story is inspirational and thought provoking. It will force you to see the world as an interconnected web that weaves your life together with the cosmos. A …
The History Of The World, Ruby Wescoat
The History Of The World, Ruby Wescoat
Theses and Dissertations
This Thesis is my effort to understand what subjects I find interesting and why. In the processes of writing and making sculpture, I discovered that my underlying fascination is in history. I am interested in places and objects for their individual qualities, but I also want to know how they relate to the world. If I am drawn to an ancient place or object, I want to examine how it fits into the contemporary world, and visa versa. The complexity of these relationships is increased by the vast number of histories (or stories) that are intertwined in the world. Over …
Perpetual Novelty, Brian Caverly
Perpetual Novelty, Brian Caverly
Theses and Dissertations
Within this thesis is a mapping out of the processes, concepts, and influences, behind the sculptural practice of Brian Caverly. From Complex Adaptive Systems to the world of order of Michel Foucault to the reexamination of the Modernist movement by Yve Alain Bois and Rosalind Krauss, a rhizomatic path of connections and lines form and cross over, weaving together into a swarming mayhem of over population. Out of this chaos and order grow complex installations and constructions that are inherently bound by the system of their making, yet attempt at every turn to escape conformity.

Effect Of Repeated Dosing Of Delta 9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, The Major Psychoactive Ingredient Of Marijuana, On Memory In Mice, Floride Niyuhire
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States. However, marijuana and cannabinoid derivatives have potential therapeutic uses. Studies in cannabis users have yielded contradictory results with regard to long-term effects on cognitive functions. There is no prospective study assessing this issue, and such studies may raise ethical issues in humans, whereas mice have been shown to exhibit similar cannabinoid-mediated behaviors as humans. The purpose of this study was to assess the consequences of chronic administration of Δ9-THC, the major psychoactive component of marijuana, in a mouse memory model. Methods: In Experiment 1, the dose-response relationship …

Larsen V. D B Feedyards, Inc., 264 Neb. 483, 645 N.W.2d 306 (2002): The Abrogation Of The Agricultural Exemption In Nebraska Workers' Compensation?, Stephanie E. Frost
Nebraska Law Review
Workers’ compensation statutes provide a form of mandatory insurance, guaranteeing compensation without regard to fault for employees who suffer injuries while in the course and scope of their employment. Not all employees or employers, however, are protected by state workers’ compensation statutes. In the first half of the 20th century, most jurisdictions enacted exclusions to the provisions of their workers’ compensation statutes for agricultural operations or agricultural laborers. The transformation of agriculture from traditional family farm to commercial operation has resulted in legal difficulties in determining whether a farm is the traditional farm operation which the workers’ compensation statutes were …
The Calculus Of Animal Valuation: Crafting A Viable Remedy, Margit Livingston
The Calculus Of Animal Valuation: Crafting A Viable Remedy, Margit Livingston
Nebraska Law Review
For most of recorded history, the majority of legal systems have regarded domesticated animals as a species of property. Part I of this article reviews the traditional method of valuing animals in tort cases and notes that some modern courts have expanded beyond the classic fair market value standard and have allowed pet owners to recover for the value of the pet to them or even for loss of affection and companionship. Most courts, however, still value animals according to their fair market value, and Part I asserts that this method of valuation produces severe undercompensation of pet owners in …

A New Corps Of Discovery For Missouri River Management, Sandra B. Zellmer
A New Corps Of Discovery For Missouri River Management, Sandra B. Zellmer
Nebraska Law Review
On the Missouri River, tensions have run high ever since the Corps of Discovery explored the river’s furthest reaches in the early 1800s, with conflict between navigation and ecological protection in the Missouri River basin. Upper basin states are pitted against lower basin states, and both have had their run-ins with federal agencies. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stands at the vortex of the controversy while the states as well as environmental and commercial associations demand contradictory and even mutually exclusive responses in river operations. The objective of this article is two-fold: first, to show that the Master Manual …
Multiple-Use Water Resources Development Versus Natural River Functions: Can The Wsra And Wrda Coexist On The Missouri River?, John H. Davidson
Multiple-Use Water Resources Development Versus Natural River Functions: Can The Wsra And Wrda Coexist On The Missouri River?, John H. Davidson
Nebraska Law Review
In 1986 the United States Congress designated the Upper Mississippi River System as both a “nationally significant ecosystem” and a “nationally significant commercial navigation system.” This ambivalence in river legislation results in Congress investing heavily in the engineering of a river while also declaring its desire to protect, in some way, the same river’s natural features. The conflicts inherent in the water resources development process have been made more intense by the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, and the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Congress frequently authorizes development projects and protection projects on the same …
The Republican River Dispute: An Analysis Of The Parties' Compact Interpretation And Final Settlement Stipulation, Aaron M. Popelka
The Republican River Dispute: An Analysis Of The Parties' Compact Interpretation And Final Settlement Stipulation, Aaron M. Popelka
Nebraska Law Review
With the arrival of the twentieth century, technology allowed surface water supplies to be used by communities, industry, and agriculture in greater quantities, and be used farther away from the water’s source. In addition, public works undertaken in the wake of the Great Depression in the 1930s allowed states to impound vast quantities of water. With increased consumption and impounding of water, interstate allocations of shared surface water needed to be regulated, and one of the prevalent means of accomplishing this task was the creation of interstate compacts. States began negotiating these water compacts among themselves to set forth specific …
The Potential For State Labor Law: The New York Greengrocer Code Of Conduct, Matthew T. Bodie
The Potential For State Labor Law: The New York Greengrocer Code Of Conduct, Matthew T. Bodie
All Faculty Scholarship
While labor law academics bemoan the ossification of federal labor law, the potential for state labor law has just begun to be explored. This Article takes a closer look at the New York Greengrocer Code of Conduct, a unique approach to the problem of industry-wide employment law violations. The Code, negotiated by the New York Attorney General's Office in conjunction with groups representing workers and greengrocers, provides a set of minimum terms and conditions for grocers which to some extent go beyond statutory requirements. In return for agreeing to the Code, grocers can avoid liability for past state employment law …

The Supreme Court’s long-awaited decisions this past summer in the Michigan affirmative action cases provided yet another landmark in the continuing controversy regarding race and education. A quarter century, almost to the day, after the Court handed down its badly splintered decision in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke,[1] the Court again concluded that universities may sometimes, but not always, give some preference to racial and ethnic minorities in deciding whom to admit. The Court, in a 5-4 decision in Grutter v. Bollinger, upheld the constitutionality of the University of Michigan Law School’s admission policy that considered race …
Insertion Of Genes And Operons Into The Escherichia Coli Genome Through Targeted Recombination, Dennis Coss
Insertion Of Genes And Operons Into The Escherichia Coli Genome Through Targeted Recombination, Dennis Coss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A method whereby DNA sequences of varying size may be accurately inserted into pre-determined locations within the Escherichia coli genome was developed. Using a binary vector system that takes advantage of either the E. coli RecET enzyme tandem or bacteriophage lambda's Redalphabeta recombinatory proteins, this method has the benefits of being both inducible and self-degrading, thereby offering a level of control to the experimenter as well as alleviating any problems that may be associated with leaving residual DNA in the bacterium. To demonstrate the usability of this system, two antibiotic resistance genes, as well as the pyrroloquinoline quinone (pqq) and …

Opportunities In The Broadcast News Media: A Case Study In Gender Equity, Derek R. Lumsden
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
When one thinks of gender equity, some people would tend to get a picture of women crusading for rights, burning their bras and men in effigy, and complaining about the unfairness of life. However, this paper deals with the silent crusade towards women's right in the broadcast news industry. It revolves around a case study done in a small Midwestern town that shows how 'liberal' ideas can be forwarded in a 'conservative' environment, especially in regards to the promotion and equity of women in the broadcast news industry.
Occupational Awareness Of Singapore Primary School Children, Joy S. Ang
Occupational Awareness Of Singapore Primary School Children, Joy S. Ang
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The introduction of career guidance programmes in Singapore schools had tended to predominantly focus on secondary pupils. The lack of proactive career guidance programmes for the primary school had been due to the misguided belief that children in the primary school still have an extremely long way to go before they enter the workforce, and that their career development had not yet begun. Studies have shown that children have a natural tendency to form firm impressions of occupations early in life. This has resulted in their adopting certain occupations and discarding others before they have fully explored and understood the …

An Ideological War Of 'Blood And Soil' And Its Effect On The Agricultural Propaganda And Policy Of The Nazi Party, 1929-1939, Keith R. Swaney
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
“One then builds a whole system of thought on such a brief, crisply formulated idea. The idea does not remain limited to this single statement; rather it is applied to every aspect of daily life and becomes the guide for all human activity. It becomes a worldview.” Dr. Joseph Goebbels spoke those words on January 9, 1928 to an audience of party members at the “Hochschule fuer Politik,” a series of talks that investigated the role of propaganda in the National Socialist movement. A few months prior to this event, voters had elected a farmer, Werner Willikens, in the South …
