Stimulating Moral Reasoning In Children Through Situational Learning And Children’S Literature, Nancy P. Gallavan, Jennifer L. Fabbi Jan 2004

Stimulating Moral Reasoning In Children Through Situational Learning And Children’S Literature, Nancy P. Gallavan, Jennifer L. Fabbi

Library Faculty Research

In any elementary school classroom, a teacher will occasionally observe students involved in activities that seem neither honest nor ethical. What can teachers do to stimulate moral reasoning skills and principled attitudes in the elementary grades? This article suggests that situational learning is ideal for developing moral reasoning in today's young learners. Situational learning allows students to choose their own situations and structure personalized outcomes that may or may not be predicted by the teacher. There are no right and wrong answers or anticipated outcomes; the process entails risk-taking and uncertainty, for teacher and students alike. Situational learning permits individuals …

Dietary Patterns And Prostate Cancer Risk In The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey Epidemiological Follow-Up Study Cohort, Marilyn Tseng, Rosalind A. Breslow, Robert F. Devillis, Regina G. Ziegler Jan 2004

Dietary Patterns And Prostate Cancer Risk In The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey Epidemiological Follow-Up Study Cohort, Marilyn Tseng, Rosalind A. Breslow, Robert F. Devillis, Regina G. Ziegler

Kinesiology and Public Health

Ecological studies implicate a “Western” diet in prostate cancer development, but whether dietary patterns measured in individuals are associated with risk has not been studied previously. We examined this issue using prospective data from the nationally representative United States Health Examination Epidemiological Follow-up Study. Among 3,779 men followed from 1982– 84 to 1992, 136 incident cases were identified. Using principal component analysis on responses to a 105-item dietary questionnaire, the following three distinct patterns were identified: a vegetable-fruit pattern; a red meat-starch pattern characterized by red meats, potatoes, cheese, salty snacks, and desserts; and a Southern pattern characterized by such …

Real-Time Sound Source Separation: Azimuth Discrimination And Resynthesis, Dan Barry, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle Jan 2004

Real-Time Sound Source Separation: Azimuth Discrimination And Resynthesis, Dan Barry, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

We present a real-time sound source separation algorithm which performs the task of source separation based on the lateral displacement of a source within the stereo field. The algorithm exploits the use of the pan pot as a means to achieve image localisation within stereophonic recordings. As such, only an interaural intensity difference exists between left and right channels for a single source. Gain scaling and phase cancellation techniques are used in the frequency domain to expose frequency dependent nulls across the Azimuth plane. The position of these nulls in conjuction with magnitude estimation and grouping techniques are then used …

The Barry Bonds Baseball Case - An Empirical Approach - Is Fleeting Possession Five Tenths Of The Ball?, Peter Adomeit

Faculty Scholarship

Mr. Barry Bonds hit his record seventy-third home run on October 7, 2001. Mr. Alex Popov was smart enough to be in the standing room only area at San Francisco's Pacific Bell Park behind the right field bleachers known as the Arcade, where Mr. Bonds had hit many of his home runs. Mr. Popov was lucky enough to be located almost precisely where the ball was hit, needing only to take one step back. He also had brought a softball glove to the park, as well as a small earbud radio on which he could listen to the play-by-play of …

We provide a comprehensive review of over 350 articles and address the issues of MFI sustainability, products and services, management practices, clientele targeting, regulation and policy, and impact assessment.
