Impact Of Dietary Changes On Hepatic Homocysteine Metabolism In Young Broilers, Fauna M. Ganson, Padmakumar Pillai, Jason L. Emmert
Impact Of Dietary Changes On Hepatic Homocysteine Metabolism In Young Broilers, Fauna M. Ganson, Padmakumar Pillai, Jason L. Emmert
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Information regarding the impact of sulfur amino acids (SAA) on hepatic homocysteine (Hcy) flux through the various metabolic pathways competing for Hcy in young broilers is lacking. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of varying levels of dietary methionine (Met), choline, and betaine on hepatic Hcy flux in young broiler chickens. A standard starter basal diet was fed to chicks until 8 d of age; 12 experimental diets were given from 8-22 d. The experimental basal diet contained deficient levels of Met and cysteine (Cys); supplemental Met (0, 0.08, 0.16, and 0.24%) was added to the basal diet …
Liana Diversity, Abundance, And Mortality In A Tropical Wet Forest In Costa Rica, Joseph Mascaro, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Walter P. Carson
Liana Diversity, Abundance, And Mortality In A Tropical Wet Forest In Costa Rica, Joseph Mascaro, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Walter P. Carson
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Lianas can have a large impact on the diversity, structure, and dynamics of tropical forests, yet they remain essentially unknown even in some of the most intensely studied tropical forests, such as La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica. We quantified the diversity, abundance, and mortality of lianas in primary and selectively logged forest at La Selva for over 3 years, from January 1999 until July 2002. We measured, identified, permanently marked, and mapped all lianas ≥1.3 m in length and 2 mm in diameter, whether climbing or free-standing, in nine, m (864 m2) plots. There were no …
Fear And Loathing In Massachusetts: Same-Sex Marriage And Some Lessons From The History Of Marriage And Divorce, Joanna L. Grossman
Fear And Loathing In Massachusetts: Same-Sex Marriage And Some Lessons From The History Of Marriage And Divorce, Joanna L. Grossman
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
When Massachusetts became the first and only state in the union to issue legal marriage licenses to same-sex couples last May, the state's Governor, Mitt Romney, warned that "Massachusetts should not become the Las Vegas of same-sex marriage." Romney's warning makes sense only as a reference to Las Vegas' reputation for the "quickie" divorce - a heavily disparaged historical practice in which residents of other states would seek a divorce in Nevada because their home states would not grant them one, at least not on the terms or at the pace they desired. This essay retraces the history of divorce …
The Origins Of Quare Impedit, Joshua C. Tate
The Origins Of Quare Impedit, Joshua C. Tate
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
The writ of quare impedit was, until the mid-nineteenth century, a standard real action for the recovery of advowsons. This article argues that the writ was most likely created between 1187 and 1196, and that it was, at least in part, a response to pressure from religious houses that acquired advowsons by charter of gift and were precluded from bringing the writ of right of advowson or the assize of darrein presentment.
The Unknown Past Of Lawrence V. Texas, Dale Carpenter
The Unknown Past Of Lawrence V. Texas, Dale Carpenter
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
This Article is an attempt to fill in some of the gaps in the public's knowledge of the case Lawrence v. Texas. Much of the rich post-arrest history of the case has been ignored. But for the courage, insight, and initiative of three men in particular, the arrest might have been another forgotten episode in what the author calls the under history of the Texas sodomy law, the history not told in appellate opinions or in most other accounts.
Section II reviews the "somewhat known" past, tracing the evolution of the Texas sodomy law from a statute so facially …
Evolutionary Divergence In Developmental Strategies And Neuromodulatory Control Systems Of Two Amphibian Locomotor Networks, Simon D. Merrywest, David L. Mclean, James T. Buchanan, Keith T. Sillar
Evolutionary Divergence In Developmental Strategies And Neuromodulatory Control Systems Of Two Amphibian Locomotor Networks, Simon D. Merrywest, David L. Mclean, James T. Buchanan, Keith T. Sillar
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Attempts to understand the neural mechanisms which produce behaviour must consider both prevailing sensory cues and the central cellular and synaptic changes they direct. At each level, neuromodulation can additionally shape the final output. We have investigated neuromodulation in the developing spinal motor networks in hatchling tadpoles of two closely related amphibians, Xenopus laevis and Rana temporaria to examine the subtle differences in their behaviours that could be attributed to their evolutionary divergence.
At the point of hatching, both species can swim in response to a mechanosensory stimulus, however Rana embryos often display a more forceful, non-locomotory coiling behaviour. Whilst …

Assessment Of Organic And Inorganic Pollutants In The Offshore Sediments, Dubai, Uae., Haifa Darwish Ahmad Al Darwish
Theses
The investigated area covers the maximum fragments of Dubai offshore in the Arabian Gulf. The sediment samples were collected from fifteen stations starting by Al-Mamzar mouth and ending by Ras Ghantoot in order to assess the organic and inorganic pollutants affecting the coastal region in Dubai.
The textural class was determined through grain-size analysis and the mineral composition was identified by X-Ray diffraction. The organic pollutants were characterized through the determination of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and individual polychlorinated biphenyls. On the other hand the …
The Role Of Environmental Impact Assessment In The Urban Development Process Case Study: Dubai, Uae, Abdulrahman Mohammed Al Sharid
The Role Of Environmental Impact Assessment In The Urban Development Process Case Study: Dubai, Uae, Abdulrahman Mohammed Al Sharid
Theses
With no doubt the Urban & Economic Development should persist in Dubai with same current rates to sustain prosperous living conditions for the inhabitants of the Emirate. These rates have exceeded the International rates in some aspects specially those related to Urban Sprawl and Power Consumption, Telecommunication Services, etc.
To insure the continuity of this economic growth, a balance should be established between consumption rates and natural component depletion. To achieve this balance, certain criteria and regulations should occur focusing on Environmental Balance and Environmental Impact Assessment which consider all permutable aspects. So as to avoid multiple negative effects in …
From Cannibalism To Empowerment: An Analects-Inspired Attempt To Balance Community And Liberty, Sor-Hoon Tan
From Cannibalism To Empowerment: An Analects-Inspired Attempt To Balance Community And Liberty, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The Confucian tradition has often been credited with a strong allegiance to the value of community. It recognizes that certain goods might be attained through special forms of human association, but not by any solitary individual. Are such community goods attained at the expense of the liberty of individual members? Philosophers have struggled with the tension between liberty and community since the dawn of Western philosophy. Aristotle complained about the false idea of liberty as "doing what one likes," which is contradictory to the true interests of the polis.2 Such lib- erty, or rather license, is undoubtedly detrimental to any …

China’S Pragmatist Experiment: Hu Shih’S Pragmatism And Dewey’S Influence In China, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In the 1920s, John Dewey’s followers in China, led by his student HuShih, attempted to put his pragmatism into practice in their quest for democracy. This essay compares Hu Shih’s thought, especially his emphasis on pragmatism asmethod, with Dewey’s philosophical positions and evaluates Hu’s achievement asa pragmatist in the context of the tumultuous times he lived in. It assesses Hu’sclaim that the means to democracy lies in education rather than politics, sincedemocracy as a way of life requires a cultural renewal beyond institutionalchanges. It argues that a problem-centered approach to social change does notpreclude radical action, even revolution. But pragmatism is …

Nationalism And Multiculturalism, Chandran Kukathas
Nationalism And Multiculturalism, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
If any issue dominates contemporary political theory, it is how to deal with cultural diversity and the claims –moral, legal, and political – made in the name of ethnic, religious, linguistic, or national allegiance (Kymlicka,2001: 17). Today, governments are confronted by demands from cultural minorities for recognition, protection, preferential treatment, and political autonomy within the boundaries of the state. Equally, international societyand its political institutions, as well as states themselves, have had to deal with demands from various peoplesfor political recognition as independent nations, and for national self-determination. The turbulent politics ofthe contemporary world may account in part for this development: …

Under conditions that may risk the success of flap surgery, free skin grafting may be an option for the reconstruction of the irradiated area. Clinical observations reveal that skin grafts applied to irradiated area undergo ulceration, resulting in chronic open wounds. The role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) in problem wounds is to increase the tissue oxygen tension to optimize fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, to enhance the oxidative killing capacity of the white blood cells and to stimulate angiogenesis. HBO has also been shown to stimulate angiogenesis in radiation-damaged tissue. In view of this data, an animal model is …

Charge-Diffusion-Filtration Models For Transport Across The Endothelial Barriers And In The Interstitial Space, Bin Chen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Vascular endothelium is the principal barrier to, and regulator of, material exchange between circulating blood and the body tissues. Both the endothelial surface glycocalyx and the glycosaminoglycans in the tissue carry negative charge. However, none of the previous studies considered these charge effects on water and solute transport across the endothelium and in the tissue. It is important to understand how charge affects the water and solute transport across the endothelial barriers and in the interstitium because it may provide strategies for controlling transport of charged or uncharged macromolecules in drug delivery; In the first part of this dissertation, to …
Reverent Self-Construction In Herman Melville's "Clarel", John Carey Murphy
Reverent Self-Construction In Herman Melville's "Clarel", John Carey Murphy
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The present study discusses Herman Melville's late career narrative poem Clarel as the title character's process of self-discovery and self-construction. During his experiences in and around the environs of Jerusalem, Clarel transforms himself through a new appreciation for subjective standards of truth. The internal transformation occurs as Clarel learns to recognize the validity of opinions different from those he previously holds. Most succinctly considered, Clarel learns the value of a constructed self independent of the previously influential notions of spiritual and physical Love A young theology student whose faith is waning, Clarel travels to Jerusalem because he imagines that the …

Extraction Of Paleohydrology And Paleoclimate Proxies From Vadose Zones And Paleolake Records In The Southwestern Great Basin, Weiquan Dong
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Thick vadose zones in arid regions recorded past climate changes up to 100 ka, so they are unique archives for continental paleoclimate change and groundwater recharge during the late Quaternary. Despite extensive research on flow and transport in arid regions, the transport properties and general response of arid vadose zones to climate regimes are still not well understood. Some of these issues are addressed with four distinct studies in this dissertation. The first study investigates effects of soil texture, vegetation coverage, and macropores on soil moisture variation at Nevada Test Site (NTS). The simulations show that bare soils have higher …
J R R Tolkien's Lecture "On Fairy -Stories": The Qualities Of Tolkienian Fantasy, Clyde Bryan Northrup
J R R Tolkien's Lecture "On Fairy -Stories": The Qualities Of Tolkienian Fantasy, Clyde Bryan Northrup
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Tolkien's 1939 lecture, "On Fairy-stories," is viewed by fantasy critics as a statement of Tolkien's aesthetics, rather than a critical framework for interpreting Tolkienian fantasy. This work will attempt to show that this lecture by Tolkien actually creates a framework for interpretation, the four qualities of Tolkienian fantasy, that will be applied later on to four contemporary fantasies by David Eddings, Roger Zelazny, Stephen R. Donaldson, and J. K. Rowling, along with Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; After surveying fantasy criticism from George MacDonald's late 19th Century essay to the present, we look at Sir Philip …
Mary Shelly, Emily Bronte, And Christina Rossetti: The Literature Of Disability, Georgia E Standish
Mary Shelly, Emily Bronte, And Christina Rossetti: The Literature Of Disability, Georgia E Standish
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Many scholarly studies have examined illness, sickness, and invalidism in British nineteenth-century fiction. Few have explored these concepts in both fiction and poetry as "disabilities." This study traces the origins of the concept of disability in the poetic and fictional representations in three nineteenth-century key women authors: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and her poetry, and Christina Rossetti's "Monna Innominata: A Sonnet of Sonnets" and "Goblin Market." Significant to the early development of the concept of disability is the emergence of the related concept of normalcy in the nineteenth-century. Along with the concept of normalcy are also the …
Characterization Of Dissolved Organic Carbon In Lake Mead, Yixin Wei
Characterization Of Dissolved Organic Carbon In Lake Mead, Yixin Wei
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Lake Mead is located in the Mojave Desert and provides water for several states in the southwestern U.S. Although most of the water in Lake Mead originates from the Colorado River, there are several minor sources of water, such as the Virgin River, the Muddy River, and the Las Vegas Wash, that could impact water quality. The principal objective of this study was to obtain new and fundamental information about dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the Lake. This study focuses on the development of concentration methods for aquatic humic substances (HS, major components of DOC), and the characterization of HS …
