Butterfly Proboscis Length And Pollen Load, November 2004, Charles Mccanna Nov 2004

Butterfly Proboscis Length And Pollen Load, November 2004, Charles Mccanna

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Pollination mutualisms between plants and pollinators facilitate increases in genetic variability for plants while providing rewards for pollinators. Specialization of pollinators on specific plants has occurred to maximize benefits of these pollination mutualisms. With this specialization, pollination syndromes have evolved that increase a flower’s chance of eliciting visitation of a specific pollinator. For example, “butterfly flowers” have evolved bright colors, short to medium corollas, and strong scents that tend to attract butterflies. However, some of these flowers have evolved long corollas to specialize on long proboscis butterflies. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of corolla length …

High-Threshold, Kv3-Like Potassium Currents In Magnocellular Neurosecretory Neurons And Their Role In Spike Repolarization, Talent Shevchenko, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong

Faculty Publications

We identified Kv3-like high-threshold K+ currents in hypothalamic supraoptic neurons using whole cell recordings in hypothalamic slices and in acutely dissociated neurons. Tetraethylammonium (TEA)-sensitive currents (TEA) evoked from -50 I/V were characterized by a large component that inactivated in 10-30 ms, and a smaller, persistent component that inactivated in 1-2 s. UV relations in dissociated neurons revealed TEA-subtracted currents with a slope and voltage dependency consistent with the presence of Kv3-like channels. In slices, tests with 0.01-0.7 mM TEA produced an IC50 of 200-300 nM for both fast and persistent currents. The fast transient current was similar to currents associated …

Statistics And Technology: Reflections On 35 Years Of Change, James J. Higgins

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

From the days when statistical calculations were done on mechanical calculators to today, technology has transformed the discipline of statistics. More than just giving statisticians the power to crunch numbers, it has fundamentally changed the way we teach, do research, and consult. In this article, I give some examples of this from my 35 years as an academic statistician.

Widespread Consumption-Dependent Systematic Error In Fish Bioenergetics Models And Its Implications, Przemyslaw G. Bajer, Gregory W. Whitledge, Robert S. Hayward

Publications

Data from laboratory evaluations of seven fish bioenergetics models (BEMs) were used to investigate possible associations between BEM prediction error in relative growth rate (RGRerror) and levels of model input variables: mean daily food-consumption rate and fish body weight. Correlation between RGRerror and fish body weight was found in three BEMs applied under submaintenance feeding conditions. A strong correlation between RGRerror and mean daily consumption level was observed in all models over full consumption ranges; consumption level explained 70%–96% of variation in RGRerror. All BEMs underestimated (by 2- to 5-fold) growth at lower consumption levels and overestimated (by 2- to …

Comparison Of Bluegill Consumption Rates By Largemouth Bass And Sunshine Bass In Structured And Nonstructured Artificial Environments, Christopher W. Hickey, Christopher C. Kohler Nov 2004

Comparison Of Bluegill Consumption Rates By Largemouth Bass And Sunshine Bass In Structured And Nonstructured Artificial Environments, Christopher W. Hickey, Christopher C. Kohler

Publications

We compared consumption rates of bluegills Lepomis macrochirus by largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops × male striped bass M. saxatilis) in structured (about 50% coverage with artificial vegetation) and nonstructured 2,000-L fiberglass tanks. In the presence of structure, instantaneous bluegill mortality from consumption by largemouth bass was significantly higher than that caused by sunshine bass but was similar when structure was absent. Instantaneous bluegill mortality from consumption by wild largemouth bass was significantly higher than by pellet-trained largemouth bass in both structured and nonstructured environments. When pellet-trained sunshine bass served as the predator, …

Institute Brief: Making Experiential Education Accessible For Students With Disabilities, Cynthia Zafft, Sara Sezun, Melanie Jordan Nov 2004

Institute Brief: Making Experiential Education Accessible For Students With Disabilities, Cynthia Zafft, Sara Sezun, Melanie Jordan

The Institute Brief Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

College students with disabilities enter with less work experience and have a harder time finding jobs than their nondisabled peers. Experiential education-- mentoring, internships, job shadowing, and so on-- can create a bridge to graduation and employment. However, that requires college professionals to consider access issues for all students. A new Institute Brief provides basic disability awareness information, suggests ways to create welcoming career offices, and offers ideas to increase access to experiential education.

Patterns Of Fitness And Fluctuating Asymmetry Across A Broad Hybrid Zone, Mitchell B. Cruzan Nov 2004

Patterns Of Fitness And Fluctuating Asymmetry Across A Broad Hybrid Zone, Mitchell B. Cruzan

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We estimated levels of developmental instability in leaves, as indicated by fluctuating asymmetry (i.e., random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry), across a broad hybrid zone between two taxa in the Piriqueta caroliniana complex. Previous studies have indicated that this hybrid zone was initiated in southern Florida and has expanded northward. We found that plants from the hybrid zone generally had higher levels of leaf developmental instability than plants from allopatric regions, but the increase in asymmetry was not substantial. Although it is usually assumed that developmental instability is associated with lower fitness, these Piriqueta hybrids from central Florida are similar …

Estimating Survival Probabilities Of Unmarked Dependent Young When Detection Is Imperfect, Paul M. Lukacs, Victoria J. Dreitz, Kenneth P. Burnham, Fritz L. Knopf Nov 2004

Estimating Survival Probabilities Of Unmarked Dependent Young When Detection Is Imperfect, Paul M. Lukacs, Victoria J. Dreitz, Kenneth P. Burnham, Fritz L. Knopf

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

We present a capture-recapture modeling approach to the estimation of survival probability of dependent chicks when only the attending adult bird is marked. The model requires that the bird's nest is found prior to hatching and that the number of eggs that hatch are counted. Subsequent data are sightings of the marked adult and a count of chicks with the adult. The model allows for imperfect detection of chicks, but the number of chicks can never exceed the number of eggs in the nest (i.e., adults cannot adopt chicks). We use data from radio-tagged adult Mountain Plovers (Charadrius montanus …

War Fever Symposium:, Geoffrey R. Stone Nov 2004

War Fever Symposium:, Geoffrey R. Stone

Missouri Law Review

As Justice Robert Jackson observed more than half a century ago, “[i]t is easy, by giving way to the passion, intolerance and suspicion of wartime, to reduce our liberties to a shadow, often in answer to exaggerated claims of security.” Indeed, the United States has a long and unfortunate history of overreacting to the dangers of wartime. Again and again, Americans have allowed fear to the better of them. Some measure of fear, of course, is inevitable—even healthy—in time of war. Otherwise, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for a nation to make the sacrifices war demands. An essential …

The Pluralistic Foundations Of The Religion Clauses, Steven H. Shiffrin Nov 2004

The Pluralistic Foundations Of The Religion Clauses, Steven H. Shiffrin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Contemporary Supreme Court interpretations suggest that the religion clauses are primarily rooted in the value of equality. The United States Supreme Court has argued that in the absence of discrimination against religion (or the presence of other constitutional values), there is no violation of the Free Exercise Clause when a statute inadvertently burdens religion. Similarly, equality values have played a strong role in the Court's Establishment Clause jurisprudence. Many distinguished commentators have pointed to the equality focus and have argued that it gives insufficient attention to the value of religious liberty. Professor Shiffrin argues that these commentators are right in …

The Role Of Silence And Avoidance In Interpersonal Conflict, Alexia Georgakopoulos Nov 2004

The Role Of Silence And Avoidance In Interpersonal Conflict, Alexia Georgakopoulos

Peace and Conflict Studies

Conflict is an inevitable process in relationships. Effective strategies must be used to manage conflict accordingly. If one is to understand how to incorporate effective strategies when dealing with conflict, the emotional experience related to conflict must be understood. The expression of anger is the emotion most associated with conflict; therefore, anger is an important emotion in the assessment of conflict. Anger is associated with arousal that may be traced to have its roots in the evolution of humankind. The emotion of anger is in part biological which links it to dispositional properties and to another extent largely communicative as …

Nietzsche On Truth And The Will, Steven Michels Nov 2004

Nietzsche On Truth And The Will, Steven Michels

Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications

The fundamental — and many would say lingering — challenge to Nietzsche concerns how he can ground the will to power, given what he says about metaphysics as a philosophic prejudice. Does his teaching not topple of its own weight/lessness? It is the standard objection to which all postmodern philosophers must respond. This article examines what Nietzsche says about the limits of truth and the role that experience and perspective have in setting standards by which we might live correctly. The will to power, Nietzsche instructs, is a claim on truth, confirmed only to the extent that it serves life …

The Effect Of The Walking Speed On The Stability Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficient Knee, Nikolaos Stergiou, Constantina O. Moraiti, Giannis Giakas, Stavros Ristanis, Anastasios D. Georgoulis Nov 2004

The Effect Of The Walking Speed On The Stability Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficient Knee, Nikolaos Stergiou, Constantina O. Moraiti, Giannis Giakas, Stavros Ristanis, Anastasios D. Georgoulis

Journal Articles

Background. The reasons behind the development of future pathology in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency are unknown. This is due to the lack of appropriate methods to assess functional dynamic knee stability. In this study, we investigated the effect of walking speed on the functional dynamic stability of the anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee. We defined functional dynamic stability as local stability or the sensitivity of the knee to small perturbations. The natural stride-to-stride variations that exist during locomotion reflect exactly the presence of these perturbations. We hypothesized that speed will affect local stability in the deficient knee, …

The Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium At Yale: Advancing The Study Of Industry And Environment, Marian Chertow, Weslynne Ashton, Radha Kuppalli

Yale School of the Environment Publications Series

Industrial symbiosis (IS), a sub-field of industrial ecology, is principally concerned with the cooperative management of resource flows through networks of businesses as a means of approaching ecologically sustainable industrial activity. Isolated researchers in a broad range of disciplines have investigated industrial symbiosis from a variety of starting points without a common agenda. The Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium was held in January 2004 at Yale University, bringing together more than 30 experts from 15 countries to discuss critical questions and issues in this emerging area. The purpose of the Symposium was to give researchers an opportunity to share their knowledge and …
