Documentary Rhetoric, Fact Or Fiction? University Students React To The Film, Bowling For Columbine, Mary Stokrocki Jan 2004

Documentary Rhetoric, Fact Or Fiction? University Students React To The Film, Bowling For Columbine, Mary Stokrocki

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In American schools, violence has evolved as one of our most riveting social problems. The FBI reported at least 28 cases of school shootings since 1982 (Diket & Mucha, 2002). Educators are concerned about the growing number of violent acts in schools across America and seek reasons and results. They insist that teachers pay attention to the pictures students create, discuss violence and related issues with them, and make time to talk about understanding a volatile world (Susi, 2001; Diket & Mucha, 2002). Freedman (1997) earlier advocated that teachers encourage students to examine the media. Ballengee-Morris and Stuhr (2001) advocate …

Meditating On The Voiceless Words Of The Invisible Other: Young Female Animé Fan Artists—Narratives Of Gender Images, Jin-Shiow Chen

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

My interest in youth anime/manga (Japanese animation and comics) culture in Taiwan began three years ago when my niece, Kitty, then 15 years old, showed me some photos of her cosplay performances and manga drawings (doujinshi) by her good friends. The beautiful pictures fascinated me but in all honesty, I was stunned that my own niece and her good friends were participating in 'those exotic activities'. As far as I knew, my niece and her friends were good students-smart, creative and diligent in pursuing fine art as their majors in high school. I was disturbed by this incongruity and could …

Theses and Dissertations

This study occurred in the Rural Academic Unit-Tiahuanaco installations, of the Bolivian Catholic University-La Paz, Bolviia, with the objective of evaluating macro- and microscopic characteristics of sperm ejaculation from bulbourethrectomized llamas. Six q'ara-variety male llamas of 3, 4, and 5 years of age were used over 8 weeks during which they were fed with natural and cultivated pastures. Ejaculate was collected with an artificial vagina with stimulation (libido) of male llamas by female llamas, for macro- and microscopic evaluation (volume, pH, color, appearance, motility, concentration, and sperm vitality). The results obtained were: average volume of 0.55[+or-]0.36 ml, with a CV …

A Mormon “Widow” In Colorado: The Exile Of Emily Wells Grant, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

A Mormon “Widow” In Colorado: The Exile Of Emily Wells Grant, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

As the southbound Denver & Rio Grande train pulled out of the depot at Salt Lake City in November 1889, Emily Wells Grant breathed a sigh of relief, and relaxed. As a plural wife of Elder Heber J. Grant, she was used to dodging United States marshals. Her recent crisis, she admitted, was of her own making. Why had she insisted on attending her father's seventy-fifth birthday celebration in the Twelfth Ward after five years of secrecy? She had been spotted there, the grand jury had reopened her husband's cohabitation case, and she had been forced to flee again. The …

Empowering Agents Within Virtual Environments, Alan Martin, Brian Duffy, Gregory O'Hare, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, John Bradley Jan 2004

Empowering Agents Within Virtual Environments, Alan Martin, Brian Duffy, Gregory O'Hare, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, John Bradley

Conference Papers

An agent’s embodiment within a virtual environment refers to its representation, and defines its capabilities, within the environment. This paper presents a system for the strong integration of embodiment with the agent’s deliberative mechanism. This mechanism is based upon the Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) paradigm, and allows the agent to deliberate directly upon the location and animation of its embodiment. This fusion then provides the agent with the ability to freely mutate its embodied form to best suit the task at hand. At the same time, care must be taken to preserve the agents’ sense of self, so that users have a …

Keeping The City Totally Clean: Yellow Fever And The Politics Of Prevention In Colonial Saint-Louis-Du-Senegal, 1850-1914, Kalala J. Ngalamulume

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article explores the ways in which French colonial authorities met the life and death challenge. represented by the re-emergence of yellow fever epidemics in Saint-Louis-du-Senegal at a time when physicians knew very. little about the etiology, diagnosis, transmission and treatment of most infectious and parasitic diseases. The discussion focuses on changing strategies and policies designed to address yellow fever threats, the attitudes and priorities of the authorities, the limits of 'colonial medicine' and the responses of. people affected by sanitary measures. The article argues that because of the ignorance of the etiology and epidemiology of yellow fever, policies were …

An Emergent Framework For Self-Motivation In Developmental Robotics, James Marshall, Doug Blank, Lisa Meeden Jan 2004

An Emergent Framework For Self-Motivation In Developmental Robotics, James Marshall, Doug Blank, Lisa Meeden

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper explores a philosophy and connectionist al- gorithm for creating a long-term, self-organizing develop- mental robot control system. This intrinsic algorithm and architecture implements self-motivation by creating a sys- tem capable of anticipating its next state, while simultane- ously attempting to seek out that which it cannot predict. These competing internal pressures are designed to drive the system in a manner reminiscent of a co-evolutionary arms race.

A Gc-Ms Method For The Determination Of Isoxsuprine In Biological Fluids Of The Horse Utilizing Electron Impact Ionization, Jeffrey M Bosken, A. F. Lehner, C. G. Hughes, W. E. Woods, F. C. Camargo, J. D. Harkins, J. Boyles, Thomas Tobin Jan 2004

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Isoxsuprine is used to treat navicular disease and other lower-limb problems in the horse. Isoxsuprine is regulated as a class 4 compound by the Association of Racing Commissioners, International (ARCI) and, thus, requires regulatory monitoring. A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method utilizing electron impact ionization was developed and validated for the quantitation of isoxsuprine in equine plasma or equine urine. The method utilized robotic solid-phase extraction and tri-methyl silyl ether products of derivatization. Products were bis-trimethylsilyl (TMS) isoxsuprine and tris-TMS ritodrine, which released intense quantifier ions m/z 178 for isoxsuprine and m/z 236 for ritodrine that were products of C-C cleavage. …

The New Judicial Federalism In Ohio: The First Decade , Robert F. Williams Jan 2004

The New Judicial Federalism In Ohio: The First Decade , Robert F. Williams

Cleveland State Law Review

There are a number of tentative conclusions that may be reached based on this selective analysis of the Ohio Supreme Court's first decade of experience with the New Judicial Federalism. First, the court is to be commended for taking the first steps toward recognizing the Ohio Constitution as a document of independent political and legal force. The Arnold decision, together with the others discussed in this article, serve to alert the lower bench, the bar, the media, and students and professors to the potential contained within state constitutions. Next, to the extent that there is inconsistency to be detected in …

How Many Times Do I Have To Tell You?! Epa's Ongoing Struggle With Data From Third-Party Pesticide Toxicity Studies Using Human Subjects, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This article addresses EPA's current and historic policy struggle regarding the position the Agency should take with respect to pesticide toxicity studies done by third parties in their attempts to register pesticides. Chemical companies often conduct these studies, or seek third-parties to do so, and submit the results to EPA in support of applications for pesticide registration. Although EPA had a high level joint Science Advisory Board/FIFRA Science Advisory Panel make recommendations to it on this subject in 1999, last year EPA asked the National Academy of Sciences to conduct additional, almost certainly duplicative review. Specifically, EPA has asked the …

The Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome And The Eastern Tent Caterpillar Ii: A Toxicokinetic/Clinical Evaluation And A Proposed Pathogenesis: Septic Penetrating Setae, Thomas Tobin, J. Daniel Harkins, John Ford Roberts, Patricia W. Vanmeter, Tara A. Fuller Jan 2004

The Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome And The Eastern Tent Caterpillar Ii: A Toxicokinetic/Clinical Evaluation And A Proposed Pathogenesis: Septic Penetrating Setae, Thomas Tobin, J. Daniel Harkins, John Ford Roberts, Patricia W. Vanmeter, Tara A. Fuller

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Reviewing the mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS), it is proposed that the fundamental mechanism of this syndrome, which includes early fetal loss, late fetal loss, uveitis, pericarditis, and encephalitis, is tissue penetration by septic barbed setal fragments (septic penetrating setae) from Eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum). Once ingested, these barbed setal fragments migrate through moving tissues, followed by rapid hematogenous spread of bacteria, bacterial emboli, and/or septic fragments of setae (septic penetrating setal emboli), collectively referred to as septic materials. Pathogenic bacteria, therefore, enter the horse as hitchhikers on or in the caterpillar setal fragments, and MRLS is caused by …

Faith And Public Life: Faith-Based Community Organizing And The Development Of Congregations, Mary Ann Ford Flaherty, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

The Congregational Development Research Study (CDRS) examines the impact of faith-based community organizing on organizational development in its primary institutional sponsors— religious congregations. That is, we study whether and how congregational development results from the particular form of civic engagement sometimes known as congregation-based, institutional, or broad-based organizing, and termed here faith-based community organizing.'

This paper evaluates the performance of eLearning in the delivery of the pilot courses pointing to its weaknesses and its strengths. The need for considered and careful use of interactive tools such …

Home And Homelessness In The Middle Of Nowhere, William I. Miller Jan 2004

Home And Homelessness In The Middle Of Nowhere, William I. Miller

Book Chapters

In Iceland one must have a home; it is an offense not to-in some circumstances, a capital offense. A sturdy beggar was liable for full outlawry, which meant he could be killed with impunity. The laws are hard on vagrants. Fornication with a beggar woman was unactionable; it was lawful to castrate a vagabond, and he had no claim if he were injured or killed during the operation. One could take in beggars solely for the purpose of whipping them, nor was one to feed or shelter them at the Thing on pain of lesser outlawry. Their booths at the …

A Web Design Curriculum For At-Risk Students, Aurelio Garcia Jr. Jan 2004

A Web Design Curriculum For At-Risk Students, Aurelio Garcia Jr.

All Graduate Projects

Students today deal emotionally, physically and socially with many negative influences in their lives. Too frequently they are besieged by violent images, the propagation of illegal drug usage among friends and family as well as other negative environmental influences. These influences create barriers that inhibit student learning and cause students to pull away from friends, teachers and school. The implementation of a web design curriculum will help provide struggling students an opportunity to reconnect with school through the use of technology. The web design curriculum lessons also provide activities that address bullying, harassment, drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco usage, suicide …

Handbook Containing Basic Requirements Of The Implementation And Management Of Parent Partnered Programs, Gregory Wayne Lovercamp Jan 2004

Handbook Containing Basic Requirements Of The Implementation And Management Of Parent Partnered Programs, Gregory Wayne Lovercamp

All Graduate Projects

This project provides school districts with background and resources to implement an alternative school program that involves parent partnership at a high level. Though resembling homeschooling, families involved in these programs in Washington State are emolled as public school students in the sponsoring district. Some homeschoolers tend to view these programs with a wary eye, while participants have found what they consider to be a godsend that enables them to educate their children the way they want with resources made available by the local school district. Applicable requirements are delineated and sample documents to meet those requirements are included.

Geographic Variation And Systematics In The South-East Asian Turtles Of The Genus Malayemys (Testudines: Bataguridae), Timothy R. Brophy Jan 2004

Geographic Variation And Systematics In The South-East Asian Turtles Of The Genus Malayemys (Testudines: Bataguridae), Timothy R. Brophy

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Geographic variation was studied in the south-east Asian turtles of the genus Malayemys (Testudines: Bataguridae). Discriminant function analysis of head-stripe and shell characters reveals a clear pattern of geographic variation that is consistent with the topography of south-east Asia and the poor dispersal abilities of these turtles. Two phenotypically and morphologically distinct groups of Malayemys occur allopatrically in lowland areas of mainland south-east Asia, and my data concludes that each should be recognized as a distinct species. Turtles from the Mekong River Basin retain the name Malayemys subtrijuga (Schlegel and Müller, 1844), whereas those from the Chao Phraya and Mae …

Problems With Characterizing The Protostome-Deuterostome Ancestor, Marcus R. Ross, Paul A. Nelson Jan 2004

Problems With Characterizing The Protostome-Deuterostome Ancestor, Marcus R. Ross, Paul A. Nelson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since Darwin’s time, the origins and relationships of the bilaterian animals have remained unsolved problems in historical biology (Conway Morris 2000). One of the central difficulties is characterizing the common ancestor of the protostomes and deuterostomes. We argue that an unresolved conceptual puzzle has plagued the many attempts to describe this Urbilaterian, or, in Erwin and Davidson’s (2002) terminology, the protostome-deuterostome ancestor (PDA). Any organism sophisticated enough to be a realistic candidate for the PDA, with such characters as an anterior-posterior axis, gut, and sensory organs, must itself have been constructed by a developmental process, or by what we term …

Evaluation Of The Et2000 Guardrail End Treatment, Kenneth R. Agent Jan 2004

Evaluation Of The Et2000 Guardrail End Treatment, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this study was to report the results of the monitoring of the performance of the ET2000 guardrail end treatment in traffic crashes. This end treatment has an energy absorbing design in which a vehicle will push a guardrail extruder back as posts designed to breakaway are broken. The W-beam guardrail is flattened as it goes through the extruder and exits a slot away from traffic.

Data for a total of 135 collisions involving the ET 2000 were identified. A crash report was obtained in the majority of crashes and the damaged guardrail was inspected in almost all …

Archaeological Site Examination, North Yard Of The Loring-Greenough House, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, J.N. Leith Smith, Katherine Howlett

Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications

A phased program of stabilization and restoration for the Loring-Greenough House and property located in Jamaica Plain, a suburb of Boston, MA, called for reconstruction of porches, construction of an entrance walk and new foundations for the carriage house. This program also included landscaping and rehabilitation of garden plantings in the north yard. Archaeological testing was conducted to identify cultural resources that would be impacted by the proposed project and to search for evidence of early garden features that could be used to guide landscape restoration. The first phase of research focused on house porches, walkway installation and foundation work …

Racism, Genocide, And Mass Murder: Toward A Legal Theory About Group Deprivations, Winston P. Nagan, Vivile F. Rodin

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article is focused on a specific and important issue: the relationship of law to the social reality of group deprivations. From this primary issue, several important sub-issues are generated having a real and substantial impact upon the role of law in the management of group deprivations at every level of social organization (local, national, regional, and international). To focus on the social reality of group deprivations requires a critical starting point. This starting point is determining whether we are adequately describing or assaying the etiology of the human personality types and self-systems that are normally characterized by feelings, sentiments, …

The Application Of Finance Theory To Increased Risk Harms In Toxic Tort Litigation, Robert J. Rhee Jan 2004

The Application Of Finance Theory To Increased Risk Harms In Toxic Tort Litigation, Robert J. Rhee

UF Law Faculty Publications

In toxic tort litigation, a plaintiff has no cause of action for increased risk of harm unless that risk is proven by a preponderance of the evidence to lead to a future physical injury. This rule of law is based on an antiquated concept of uncertainty, and evinces the law's detachment from the knowledge gained from other intellectual disciplines and the everyday workings of the world. This article argues that freedom from increased risk should be a legally cognizable interest, the violation of which gives rise to an independent cause of action. When analyzed under finance theory, increased risk harms …
