Meta-Analysis, Spatial, And Temporal Models To Analyze The Possible Association Between Childhood Leukemia In Proximity To Nuclear Facilities, Peter Baker Jan 2004

Meta-Analysis, Spatial, And Temporal Models To Analyze The Possible Association Between Childhood Leukemia In Proximity To Nuclear Facilities, Peter Baker

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to gain a better understanding of the possible association between childhood leukemia and nuclear facilities by conducting a meta-analysis and by the use of spatial and temporal models with respect to Pickering Nuclear Generator (PNG) in Ontario, Canada. The meta-analysis was conducted to combine and statistically analyze the many studies of childhood leukemia in the vicinity of nuclear facilities. Our focus was on studies that calculated SMRs or SIRs for individual nuclear sites. Due to variability between studies in defining age and geographic zones, eight separate analyses were performed based on age and zone …

The Microbiology Of The Las Vegas Wash, Angela L Rosenblatt Jan 2004

The Microbiology Of The Las Vegas Wash, Angela L Rosenblatt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Las Vegas Wash, the only drainage channel for the Las Vegas hydrographic basin, drains to Lake Mead, the major source of drinking water for the Las Vegas valley. High levels of fecally-associated bacteria are observed in the Wash, particularly during the summer months; Several studies were undertaken to investigate the indicator organisms in the Las Vegas Wash. Attempts were made to determine the source(s) of fecal bacteria, with results pointing toward overall species being environmentally-associated as opposed to being a result of human contributions. Wash enterococci showed high resistance to low levels of vancomycin. Regrowth potential of Escherichia coli …

Useful Concepts And Approaches To Ethics In Natural Resources Management, John D. Fox Jr. Jan 2004

Useful Concepts And Approaches To Ethics In Natural Resources Management, John D. Fox Jr.

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

My objective in this paper is to highlight a few concepts and approaches from ethics that might serve as food for thought when students are wrestling with controversial natural resource issues. Overall, I'm advocating critical reflection, empirical inquiry, and intellectual honesty. I am particularly going to look at the interrelationship between science and ethics. I suspect not everyone will agree with everything I suggest, but, as in the classroom, my purpose is to stimulate thought and dialogue. First, I present some basic concepts followed by a simplified summary of classical approaches to ethics. Finally, I suggest that Aldo Leopold's land …

Cultural Nicknames: An Important Feature Of Galdós’ Art, Vernon A. Chamberlin Jan 2004

Cultural Nicknames: An Important Feature Of Galdós’ Art, Vernon A. Chamberlin

Decimonónica

Throughout his lifetime Galdós had a special fondness for and a creative interest in the use of nicknames. Gregorio Marañón, for example, says that until the end of his life, Don Benito delighted in using “apodos y motes [. . .] con que designaba constantemente a las personas de su trato, llenos [estos apodos] siempre de un hiperbólico gracejo” (71). We also know that Galdós and Concha-Ruth Morell, during the period of their intimacy, continually used a rich variety of nicknames not only to refer to each other, but also to other persons (Smith 91-120). Thus it is no surprise …

“My Reputación Precedes Me”: La Malinche And Palimpsests Of Sacrifice, Scapegoating, And Mestizaje In Xicoténcatl And Los Mártires Del Anáhuac, Lisa Nevárez

Decimonónica

The treachery of a woman, the violence of conquest, and the birth of the mestizo—these form the beginnings of Mexico’s history. Octavio Paz vocalizes the grito unique to Mexico, ¡Viva México, hijos de la Chingada!, and in so doing takes his place among the individuals salivating to blame La Malinche, also known as Marina or Malintzín, for her betrayal of her people by giving birth to Hernán Cortés’ child, the “first” mestizo and the ancestor of the modern Mexican.1 Examining the novels Xicoténcatl (1826), published anonymously, and Los mártires del Anáhuac (1870), by Eligio Ancona, facilitates a glimpse …

Habitat Preferences And Diving Behavior Of White Marlin (Tetrapturus Albidus) Released From The Recreational Rod-And-Reel And Commercial Pelagic Longline Fisheries In The Western North Atlantic Ocean: Implications For Habitat-Based Stock Assessment Models, Andrij Horodysky, David W. Kerstetter, John E. Graves

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

To improve billfish assessments, researchers have applied habitat-based models that incorporate behavioral and oceanographic parameters to standardize historical catch-per-uniteffort time -series data, accounting for significant gear changes over time. However, there has been little behavioral data from Atlantic billfishes to support these models. We provide information on habitat preferences of white marlin released from recreational and commercial fisheries in the western North Atlantic. White marlin were tagged with pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) from recreational rod and reel (n=22) and commercial pelagic longline (n=2) fisheries between May-November 2002. Our data indicate that each surviving white marlin spent the majority of …

The Moo As An Arcade: Minimalism And Interpretive Literary Games, Steven E. Jones, Neil Fraistat Jan 2004

The Moo As An Arcade: Minimalism And Interpretive Literary Games, Steven E. Jones, Neil Fraistat

English Faculty Publications

Classic arcade videogames are engaging and immersive for counter-intuitive reasons, precisely because they are schematic and iconic, because they require a collaborative act of imagination on the part of the player, and because playing them is about being part of a shared arcade-based culture. As we have found in our own experiments in the Romantic Circles MOO, graphic minimalism forces us to maintain gameplay in a wider contextual setting. It’s not just retro fashion that gives these games their continued appeal; it’s that we are called on to make something of what is only sketchily suggested, and optimally we do …
