Micrococcus Luteus - Survival In Amber, C. L. Greenblatt, J. Baum, B. Y. Klein, S. Nachshon, V. Koltunov, R. J. Cano

Biological Sciences

A growing body of evidence now supports the isolation of microorganisms from ancient materials. However, questions about the stringency of extraction methods and the genetic relatedness of isolated organisms to their closest living relatives continue to challenge the authenticity of these ancient life forms. Previous studies have successfully isolated a number of spore-forming bacteria from organic and inorganic deposits of considerable age whose survival is explained by their ability to enter suspended animation for extended periods of time. However, despite a number of putative reports, the isolation of non-spore-forming bacteria and an explanation for their survival have remained enigmatic. Here …

Renovation In Historical Cities: Emergency And City Services In Fes, Morocco, Rogerio Penido Apr 2004

Renovation In Historical Cities: Emergency And City Services In Fes, Morocco, Rogerio Penido

Focus

The concept of what is a historical monument is changing and our planning practices should follow. Vernacular buildings may be considered monuments, a notion that may be expanded to the scale of a whole city. This is the case in Fes, in Morocco. As the historical center has been listed by UNESCO as a "World Monument", the King of Morocco responded by creating a public agency to manage all the projects in Fes. In this area, planning and building streets for emergencies and services is not a simple challenge.

Conversational Performance And The Poetic Construction Of An Ideology, Gail Shuck Apr 2004

Conversational Performance And The Poetic Construction Of An Ideology, Gail Shuck

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study places conversational performance, or speakers’ attempts during everyday talk to draw attention to the aesthetic form of their utterances, at the center of an analysis of linguistic ideology. It examines, in particular, the ways in which two white, middle-class, U.S. university students use performance strategies to construct as Other an English-speaking man whom one student encounters on a flight from Saudi Arabia. Drawing on a socially and ideologically situated theory of verbal art, this article proposes five interconnected relations between performance and ideology. Together, these relations constitute a step toward an integrated theory of an inextricable link between …

Assessment Of The Artisanal Shark Fishery And Local Shark Fin Trade On Unguja Island, Zanzibar, Deborah Schaeffer Apr 2004

Assessment Of The Artisanal Shark Fishery And Local Shark Fin Trade On Unguja Island, Zanzibar, Deborah Schaeffer

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study investigates the current state of the directed artisanal shark fishery off Unguja Island, Zanzibar, with a focus on the East Asian shark fin trade and its impact on the utilization of this valuable marine resource. The study concentrates on the two fish markets in Stone Town: Malindi and Darajani. Large fish are brought to these markets both from nearby waters and from other coastal towns on the island. Data was gathered through observation of the type and number of sharks landed, fishing practices employed, and sale of shark products, particularly fins. Local fin traders and exporters were interviewed …

Etsu Today - Spring 2004, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

Each morning, when I walk into my Dossett Hall office at ETSU, I have a feeling that something good is about to happen. More often than not, it does. ETSU is an energized campus, populated with faculty, staff, and students whose talents and knowledge rank with the best in the country. It’s a place energized, too, by community partnerships that keep us growing and healthy, even during the hardest of times. I remember the day I walked into the office and learned that the late and beloved Congressman James H. “Jimmy” Quillen had left the ETSU Foundation $14.6 million for …

Group-Theoretic Approach As A General Framework For Sensors, Neural Networks, Fuzzy Control, And Genetic Boolean Networks, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Chitta Baral, Valery D. Mazin

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When describing a system of interacting genes, a useful approximation is provided by a Boolean network model, in which each gene is either switched on or off - i.e., its state is described by a Boolean variable.

Recent papers by I. Shmulevich et al. show that although in principle, arbitrarily complex Boolean functions are possible, in reality, the corresponding Boolean networks can be well described by Boolean functions from one of the so-called Post classes - classes that are closed under composition. These classes were originally described by E. Post.

It is known that the Boolean model is only an …
