Hazards Identification Model For Rail Rapid Transit Accidents, Lung-Chuang Wang Apr 2004

Hazards Identification Model For Rail Rapid Transit Accidents, Lung-Chuang Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In comparison with the other transportation modes, rail rapid transit already enjoys a higher degree of safety as it is designed with the exclusive right of way and the automatic train control and monitoring systems. Nevertheless, rail rapid transit systems are not free from serious accidents, which often led to human injuries and facility damages. The planning of accident prevention and emergency measures, therefore, are still important issues of the rail rapid transit operations. The model presented in this study analyses the process of hazard identification in two stages, which clearly indicate the factors of the inherent and direct hazard …

Ox Yokes: Culture, Comfort And Animal Welfare, Andrew (Drew) B. Conroy Apr 2004

Ox Yokes: Culture, Comfort And Animal Welfare, Andrew (Drew) B. Conroy

Faculty Publications

Three yoking systems are used globally to capture the power of oxen. These are the head yoke, withers yoke, and neck yoke. Each system has its strengths and weaknesses, with culture and cattle playing a role in the adoption and use of each system. The neck yoke system offers important lessons in understanding animal comfort and yoke design. Despite its success, the neck yoke should not be universally adopted, nor should it be universally promoted. However ignoring the lessons learned in North America over the last 400 years would ignore animals and teamsters who perfected this system and learned to …

Repressor element 1 (RE1)-silencing transcription factor (REST)/neuron-restrictive silencer factor (NRSF) can repress several terminal neuronal differentiation genes by binding to a specific DNA sequence (RE1/neuron-restrictive silencer element [NRSE]) present in their regulatory regions. REST-VP16 binds to the same RE1/NRSE, but activates these REST/NRSF target genes. However, it is unclear whether REST-VP16 expression is sufficient to cause formation of functional neurons either from neural stem cells or from heterologous stem cells. Here we show that the expression of REST-VP16 in myoblasts grown under muscle differentiation conditions blocked entry into the muscle differentiation pathway, countered endogenous REST/NRSF-dependent repression, activated the REST/NRSF target …

“French Heartworm” Infection Of Dogs & Foxes In Newfoundland Apr 2004

“French Heartworm” Infection Of Dogs & Foxes In Newfoundland

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

French Heartworm is the common name for a parasitic disease affecting foxes, dogs, and other members of the dog family. Caused by the nematode (worm) Angiostrongylus vasorum, this disease was first thought to exist in France in the mid 1800's. It is now considered to exist generally in Europe but has not been reported in North America other than on the Island of Newfoundland, with the exception of infected animals imported from Europe but diagnosed in North America. The first case recorded in Newfoundland was in Aquaforte (Avalon Peninsula) in 1973.
When and how it might have come over …

Globalization: Panacea For The World Or Conquistador Of International Law And Statehood?, Aaron J. Lodge Apr 2004

Globalization: Panacea For The World Or Conquistador Of International Law And Statehood?, Aaron J. Lodge

ExpressO

Recent powerful occurrences have led to an unprecedented world wide move in the direction of globalization. Globalization involves eliminating trade barriers, exchanging products and services across national borders, and the emergence of truly global corporations. Governments have embraced globalization in hopes of building stronger economies, creating jobs, and providing increased services and products. Debate has centered on the effect of globalization on sovereignty and the effect on individuals. However, the effect of globalization on international law has been largely ignored.

Today, international law—in the form of free trade agreements—enables the globalization process to occur faster than ever before. This article …

O-Cell Testing Of Reinforced Concrete Driven Piles, Sanjeev Kumar, Cesar Alarcon, Alyass Hosin Apr 2004

O-Cell Testing Of Reinforced Concrete Driven Piles, Sanjeev Kumar, Cesar Alarcon, Alyass Hosin

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Precast and prestressed concrete piles, approximately 12 to 18 inch diameter or width are frequently used to support heavy building and bridge structures. Fly ash has long been recognized as a construction material used frequently in several Portland cement and concrete products, structural fills, embankments, and road bases/subbases. However, use of Illinois PCC bottom ash in construction of precast concrete piles so far has been very limited, if any, mainly due to the lack of technical data to convince the engineering community that bottom ash could be used in precast and prestressed concrete piles without jeopardizing their performance and the …

A Dangerous Place To Dig Excavation At The Toe Of Saluda Dam, Elena Sossenkina, Scott Newhouse, Matt Glunt Apr 2004

A Dangerous Place To Dig Excavation At The Toe Of Saluda Dam, Elena Sossenkina, Scott Newhouse, Matt Glunt

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Remedial work on the Saluda Dam will entail excavation at the toe to depths of over 50 ft. Excavation at the toe of a large high hazard dam is an unusual event. Although statically stable the Dam doesn’t meet modern standards for dynamic stability. Based on the assessment of liquefaction potential, the dam requires remediation. The downstream hazard entails consequences of failure of potential loss of life. Due to such consequence, the Regulator called for renovation of Saluda Dam. Engineers evaluated several remedial alternatives. The chosen alternative entails excavation at the toe for construction of new RCC and Rockfill Berms. …
