Carbon Cycling In Three Mature Black Spruce ( Picea Mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) Forests In Interior Alaska, Jason Gene Vogel
Carbon Cycling In Three Mature Black Spruce ( Picea Mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) Forests In Interior Alaska, Jason Gene Vogel
Natural Resources
Climate warming in high latitudes is expected to alter the carbon cycle of the boreal forest. Warming will likely increase the rate of organic matter decomposition and microbial respiration. Faster organic matter decomposition should increase plant available nutrients and stimulate plant growth. I examined these predicted relationships between C cycle components in three similar black spruce forests (Picea mariana [Mill] B.S.P) near Fairbanks, Alaska, that differed in soil environment and in-situ decomposition. As predicted, greater in-situ decomposition rates corresponded to greater microbial respiration and black spruce aboveground growth. However root and soil respiration were both greater at the site where …

Traditional Knowledge And Contaminants Project And Resource Guide Project, Final Report, Patricia Cochran, Jack Kruse, Larry Merculieff
Traditional Knowledge And Contaminants Project And Resource Guide Project, Final Report, Patricia Cochran, Jack Kruse, Larry Merculieff
ISER Reports
The goal of these projects has been to build capacity among Alaska federally recognized tribes to address their concerns about adverse changes in the environment. The University of Alaska’s Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Alaska Native Science Commission collaborated on both projects. Since the projects are complementary, we have combined the two final reports. There were seven components to the combined projects (component number five reflects the entire scope of work of the Resource Guide project): 1. Develop a traditional knowledge base 2. Develop a science knowledge base 3. Develop an integrated database 4. Develop a web-based …

Galena Electric Power - A Situational Analysis, Robert E. Chaney, Steve Colt, Ronald A. Johnson, Richard W. Wies, Gregory J. White
ISER Reports
The purpose of the investigation is to compare the economics of various electrical power generation options for the City of Galena. Options were assessed over a 30-year project period, beginning in 2010, and the final results were compared on the basis of residential customer electric rates ($/kWh). Galena’s electric utility currently generates power using internal combustion diesel engines and generator sets. Nearby, there is an exposed coal seam, which might provide fuel for a power plant. Contributions to the energy mix might come from solar, municipal solid waste, or wood. The City has also been approached by Toshiba, Inc., as …
Life-History Patterns Of North American Elk: Effects Of Population Density On Resource Partitioning, Reproduction, And Plant Productivity, Kelley Merlet Stewart
Life-History Patterns Of North American Elk: Effects Of Population Density On Resource Partitioning, Reproduction, And Plant Productivity, Kelley Merlet Stewart
Biological Sciences
I examined density dependence in North American elk (Cervus elaphus ) and effects of density dependent processes on resource partitioning, physical condition, reproduction, and ecosystem processes. Specifically, I examined spatial, temporal, and dietary niche partitioning among elk, mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and cattle (Bos taurus ). I tested hypotheses related to density-dependent processes in elk by creating populations at high (20.1 elk/km2) and low (4.1 elk/km2) density. I hypothesized that physical condition and fecundity of females would be lower in an area of high population density than in the low-density area. Simultaneously, I tested hypotheses relating to herbivore optimization in …

Program Evaluation: Rose Urban Rural Teacher Training 2004, Rosyland Frazier, G. Williamson Mcdiarmid, Alexandra Hill
ISER Reports
Teacher Training, together with the Student Exchange and the Sister School Exchange, make up the Rose Urban Rural Exchange. That broad program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the Alaska Humanities Forum. It is intended to build mutual understanding and a statewide sense of community by bringing urban students and teachers to rural Alaska-and rural students and teachers to urban Alaska-to learn about each other's cultures. Under the Teacher Training program, teachers from middle schools and high schools in urban areas participate in cultural camps sponsored by rural communities and Alaska Native organizations. These camps, …

Longitudinal Study Of First-Year Students Rose Urban Rural Exchange Program, Williamson Mcdiarmid, Rosyland Frazier
ISER Reports
The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Alaska Anchorage annually evaluates components of the Rose Urban Rural Exchange Program, to determine how well the program is achieving its purpose. The program's goal is to build understanding and a statewide sense of community-by bringing urban students to rural Alaska and rural students to urban Alaska, to help them learn about each other's cultures....In 2004, the Institute of Social and Economic (ISER) proposed, for the first time, to evaluate not only how the program did in the current year, but also to evaluate the program's lasting effects …
United Or Divided Twins? The Political Economy Of Beringia, Arlon R. Tussing, John Tichotsky
United Or Divided Twins? The Political Economy Of Beringia, Arlon R. Tussing, John Tichotsky
ISER Reports
When the US purchased Alaska from the Russians in1867 it quickly stepped into Russia's role in the colonial relationship. The US exploited salmon as the primary base resource from about 1878. Gold was discovered in lode deposits in the 1880s in the southeast of Alaska (Juneau and Treadwell), about the same time as the Lena goldfields of Irkutsk began to step up operations. We anticipate that Alaska contains or has demonstrated most of the elements that we can expect to see in the foreseeable development of other post-Soviet Arctic regions, including Alaska's nearest neighbor Chukotka, one of Russia's poorest and …
Leaving King Island: The Closure Of A Bureau Of Indian Affairs School And Its Consequences, Nicole M. Braem
Leaving King Island: The Closure Of A Bureau Of Indian Affairs School And Its Consequences, Nicole M. Braem
Arctic and Northern Studies
By 1966, the King Island Inupiat had moved from their island village and lived at Nome. Little has been written about the de facto relocation of the King Islanders---and how and why it happened. What follows is an ethnohistory of the relocation based on the anthropology and history of the Bering Strait region, archival records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and interviews with King Islanders in Nome. The heart of the matter was the village's school. Based on the evidence, the BIA closed the school because of the expense and inconvenience of operating at King Island. This accomplished what …

Adolph Murie: Denali's Wilderness Conscience, Linda S. Franklin
Arctic and Northern Studies
Denali National Park, Alaska substantially owes its stature as Alaska's premier wilderness park to Adolph Murie. Forty years after he retired as park biologist, Murie still influences the perception and management of Denali National Park. Murie's development from childhood to esteemed scientist and wilderness advocate followed a linear progression. His rural upbringing under the tutelage of his older brother, Olaus Murie, cultivated his desire to be a biologist and his appreciation for wild places. His academic training in animal ecology solidified his belief that the management of natural areas must consider all species as essential and equally valuable. His pioneering …

Determining The Biosynthetic Sequence In The Early Steps Of The Fumonisin Pathway By Use Of Three Gene-Disruption Mutants Of Fusarium Verticillioides, Ravi S. Bojja, Ronald Cerny, Robert H. Proctor, Liangcheng Du
Ronald Cerny Publications
Fumonisins are polyketide-derived mycotoxins produced by Fusarium verticillioides, a fungal pathogen of corn plants. Although a gene cluster for the biosynthesis of fumonisins has been cloned, the biosynthetic pathway is still not clear. We have used three gene-disrupted mutants, designated ΔFUM1, ΔFUM6, and ΔFUM8, to study the early steps of the pathway. Fumonisins were not produced in single-strain cultures of the ΔFUM1, ΔFUM6, and ΔFUM8 mutants. However, fumonisins were produced by ΔFUM1 or ΔFUM8 mutants when they were cocultured with the ΔFUM6 mutant. No fumonisins were produced when the ΔFUM1 and ΔFUM8 mutants were cocultured. These results suggest that …

A Systemic Gene Silencing Method Suitable For High Throughput, Reverse Genetic Analyses Of Gene Function In Fern Gametophytes., George Rutherford, Milos Tanurdzic, Mitsuyasu Hasebe, Jo Ann Banks
Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications
Background
Ceratopteris richardii is a useful experimental system for studying gametophyte development and sexual reproduction in plants. However, few tools for cloning mutant genes or disrupting gene function exist for this species. The feasibility of systemic gene silencing as a reverse genetics tool was examined in this study.
Results
Several DNA constructs targeting a Ceratopteris protoporphyrin IX magnesium chelatase (CrChlI) gene that is required for chlorophyll biosynthesis were each introduced into young gametophytes by biolistic delivery. Their transient expression in individual cells resulted in a colorless cell phenotype that affected most cells of the mature gametophyte, including the …
The Effect Of Female Server's Attractiveness On Restaurant Tipping, Anne M. Wisneski
The Effect Of Female Server's Attractiveness On Restaurant Tipping, Anne M. Wisneski
Honors Theses
This paper presents the results of a field experiment designed to test the hypothesis that restaurant patrons (particularly men) would leave larger tips for an attractive versus unattractive female server. The author manipulated server attractiveness by varying her appearance before shirts as a food server at a popular restaurant. Contrary to the hypothesis, patrons (both men and women) left comparable sized tips in the attractive and unattractive server conditions. Explanations for this null effect are discussed in the contest of research on the effect of server attractiveness on tipping and perceived tipping norms.
