Are Single-Sex Schools Inherently Unequal?, Michael Heise
Are Single-Sex Schools Inherently Unequal?, Michael Heise
Michigan Law Review
In chess, a "fork" occurs when a player, in a single move, attacks two or more of an opponent's pieces simultaneously, forcing a necessary choice between unappealing outcomes. Similar to the potentially devastating chess move, single-sex public schooling forks many constitutionalists and feminists. Constitutionalists are forced to reexamine the "separate but equal" doctrine's efficacy, this time through the prism of gender. Although the doctrine - forged in the crucible of race and overcome in the monumental triumph we know as Brown v. Board of Education - rested dormant for generations, persistent (and increasing) single-sex education options are forcing scholars to …
The Ethnic Question In Law And Development, Lan Cao
The Ethnic Question In Law And Development, Lan Cao
Michigan Law Review
World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability, by Professor Amy Chua, is an analytically complex narrative of contemporary ethnic violence in the current era of globalization. Although such violence has historical roots, according to Chua it has also been fueled by free-market forces and democratization. The book is a forceful and provocative indictment of the current U.S. policy of promoting and exporting markets and democracy to developing and formerly communist, market-transitional countries. In her book, Professor Chua applies her thesis - that ethnicity, global capitalism, and democracy are a volatile mix - …
Effects Of Time Of Day On Executive Function In Native American Children And Non-Native American Children, Jennifer Garaas Scott
Effects Of Time Of Day On Executive Function In Native American Children And Non-Native American Children, Jennifer Garaas Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has examined the performance of Native American children on cognitive tasks. The results from these studies indicated that Native American children performed poorer on these tests than Caucasian children, especially on the Verbal IQ scale. Research on cognitive tasks have found that time of day affects performance. One area of cognitive function, not yet examined for susceptibility to circadian influence, is that of executive functioning. The present study examined the effects of time of day on executive functioning in Native American children and Non-Native American children. The study sample consisted of thirty Native American children and fifty-four Caucasian …

Although it is commonly assumed that closely related animals are similar in body size, the degree of similarity has not been examined across the taxonomic hierarchy. Moreover, little is known about the variation or consistency of body size patterns across geographic space or evolutionary time. Here, we draw from a data set of terrestrial, nonvolant mammals to quantify and compare patterns across the body size spectrum, the taxonomic hierarchy, continental space, and evolutionary time. We employ a variety of statistical techniques including "sib-sib" regression, phylogenetic autocorrelation, and nested ANOVA. We find an extremely high resemblance (heritability) of size among congeneric …

Terrestrial Movements And Habitat Use Of Gopher Frogs (Rana Capito) At Fort Benning, Georgia, Jonathan H. Neufeldt
Theses and Dissertations
Gopher frogs (Rana capito) were radio-tracked between the 2000 and 2001 breeding seasons to study their terrestrial movements and habitat use in a longleaf pine- sandhill area on the Fort Benning Military Reservation, Georgia. The telemetry research was conducted in response to the need for biological data concerning gopher frog terrestrial habits. Ultimately the data could aid biologists and land managers in describing critical habitat and the development of a management or recovery plan. Twelve gopher frogs were caught at a herpetofaunal array surrounding two neighboring breeding ponds during a post breeding migration, implanted with miniature transmitters, released and radio-tracked …
Form-Based Zoning: A Tool For Creating Small Business Opportunities, Tiffin Michelle Goodman
Form-Based Zoning: A Tool For Creating Small Business Opportunities, Tiffin Michelle Goodman
Master's Projects
The United States has a curious history of employing zoning as a reactionary solution to society’s physical problems. In many ways, it has been an effective tool for ensuring the built environment develops in a manner consistent with cultural norms, preferences, and safety concerns. However, it has failed, in its current form, to keep pace with the growth pressures, transportation limitations, and basic service needs of the modern society. Hence, zoning regulation in the United States is at a crossroads. The structure of zoning ordinances must be reevaluated periodically to ensure they are effective and efficient in their goals. Traditional …

Attachment Strategies Of Adolescents In Foster Care: Indicators And Implications, Shannon Leigh Trewartha
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of an art-based assessment to recognize the attachment strategy of adolescents in foster care. The extenuating circumstances of foster care make it imperative to develop a sensitive, accurate, and time-efficient tool. Knowledge of specific attachment strategy can better guide therapeutic interventions. This study examined adolescents’ attachment strategy as measured by the Adolescent Relationship Questionnaire (A-RSQ) in comparison to ratings on the Bird’s Nest Drawing (BND). Fourteen adolescents in foster care participated.
Due to the low number of participants, data was predominantly analyzed descriptively. On the A-RSQ, the sample had lower …
Knitting In Art Therapy: An Exploratory Study, Mollie Irene Howey Tracy
Knitting In Art Therapy: An Exploratory Study, Mollie Irene Howey Tracy
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
While knitting has long been considered a functional craft, there is significant evidence to support knitting as an art form. Current research exploring the artistic, meditative, and therapeutic qualities of knitting was reviewed and findings indicated scarce research on knitting in art therapy. In this phenomenological study, six female knitters were interviewed and the author addressed her personal experience as well. Several themes were identified: the freedom felt when knitting, keeping one’s hands busy, reduction of anxiety, sharing the finished piece with others, a connection to self and to others, and knitting as a bridge into more traditional art therapy …

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Humanitarian aid organizations, both domestic and international, provide health care, mental health services, education, and community development for traumatized children worldwide living in regions affected by political violence. Sparse information exists regarding the role of an art therapist within these organizations. The profession of art therapy lacks research specific to the benefits of intervention and program development within the context of an international humanitarian aid team. This thesis reviews the ethnographic research of an art therapy graduate student who explored the opportunities for art therapy within such a team.
Cultural competency was an essential component of the researcher’s success while …
An Art Therapy And Ecopsychology Intervention With A Grieving Child, Carolyn M. Lucas
An Art Therapy And Ecopsychology Intervention With A Grieving Child, Carolyn M. Lucas
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
There is a discernable need for research into the use of alternative therapies like art therapy and ecopsychology with grieving children. Art therapy seeks to facilitate an individual’s resolution of personal discord through the use of art media and directives. Ecopsychology relies on the assertion that by connecting individuals to the natural world, an improved consciousness will emerge. A literature review was conducted to examine these theories and their applications to grief treatment in children. Camps, workshops, and institutions regularly employ these therapeutic methods to help children with the grieving process. Art therapists in these settings utilize art activities like …

Tuba, A Novel Protein Containing Bin/Amphiphysin/Rvs And Dbl Homology Domains, Links Dynamin To Regulation Of The Actin Cytoskeleton, Marco Antonio Del Valle Salazar
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Tuba is a novel scaffold protein that functions to bring together dynamin with components of the actin cytoskeleton. It is concentrated at synapses in brain and binds dynamin selectively through four N-terminal Src homology-3 (SH3) domains. Tuba binds a variety of actin regulatory proteins, including N-WASP, CR16, WAVE1, WIRE, PIR121, NAP1, and Ena/VASP proteins, via a C-terminal SH3 domain. Direct binding partners include N-WASP and Ena/VASP proteins. Forced targeting of the C-terminal SH3 domain to the mitochondrial surface can promote accumulation of F-actin around mitochondria. A Dbl homology domain present in the middle of Tuba upstream of a Bin/amphiphysin/Rvs (BAR) …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fresh beef packaged in high-oxygen modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) has longer red color stability than beef in oxygen-permeable polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film. However, fresh beef in high oxygen becomes rancid by 10 days storage at 2°C. Thus the objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of various antioxidants (milk mineral, MM; sodium tripolyphosphate, STP; vitamin E, E) on color and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values of ground chuck stored in 80% oxygen MAP for 14 days at 1° C. A preliminary experiment was also done to determine the effect of raw meat history (surface area during storage and storage …
Organizational Structure And The Creative Process, Edward C. Bowen Edd
Organizational Structure And The Creative Process, Edward C. Bowen Edd
Dissertations
A creative edge can be a powerful source of competitive advantage in business, in war, in the arts, in science, and in life. In fact, creativity, innovation and the ability to adapt and change organizational structures in response to an increasingly fast-paced and competitive business environment are increasingly seen as essential for the success of many organizations. A current trend in organizational theory associates increases in formalization and both horizontal and vertical integration with decreases in an organization's ability to innovate and adapt. Consequently, organizational change efforts often involve moving from traditional, hierarchical structures toward flatter, more flexible types of …

Effects Of Schedule Segmentation On Pausing And Escape In The Transitions Between Favorable And Unfavorable Schedules Of Reinforcement, Tammy R. Wade
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Simple schedules of reinforcement typically are preferred to chained schedules of equal duration. In the current study, pigeons served in six experiments designed to test whether the juxtaposition of simple and chained schedules would engender the disruption in behavior typically observed in the transition from favorable to unfavorable conditions of reinforcement. In one set of experiments, a multiple schedule was employed in which a simple schedule alternated irregularly with a chained schedule. Whether fixed-ratio or fixed-interval schedules were employed, only half the subjects paused for an extended duration in the simple-to-chain transition, and this occurred only when the first segment …
