Making Persons And Selves From Lumps Of Matter, Nick Napolitan May 2004

Making Persons And Selves From Lumps Of Matter, Nick Napolitan

Macalester Journal of Philosophy

The contemporary development of naturalism has left us has in many ways ‘objectified’ our world, giving us a material world of laws and causes, that is in some ways strangely distant from our notions of ‘self.’ We might be said to possess a very strong ‘sense of self,’ and looking at our friends and neighbors, we get the impression that everybody holds similarly strong feelings. We live in a world populated by lumps of matter, but also rational agents, intricate persons, and perhaps most importantly, centered around a self. How can naturalism, without invoking the Cartesian ego, account for our …

Free-Stall Dimensions: Effects On Preference And Stall Usage, Cassandra B. Tucker, Daniel M. Weary, David Fraser May 2004

Free-Stall Dimensions: Effects On Preference And Stall Usage, Cassandra B. Tucker, Daniel M. Weary, David Fraser

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

In 2 experiments, free-stall dimensions were examined to determine how they affected stall preference, usage, cleanliness, and milk production in Holstein dairy cattle. In experiment 1, stall width (112 or 132 cm) and stall length (229 and 274 cm from curb to wall) were compared in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of stall treatments using 15 individually housed, non-lactating animals. Cows showed no clear preference for stall size as measured by lying time. When animals had no choice between stalls, average lying time was higher in the wide stalls than in the narrow stalls (10.8 vs. 9.6 ± 0.3 …

Private Rap Sheet Or Public Record? Reconciling The Disclosure Of Nonconviction Information Under Washington's Public Disclosure And Criminal Records Privacy Acts, Lynette Meachum May 2004

Private Rap Sheet Or Public Record? Reconciling The Disclosure Of Nonconviction Information Under Washington's Public Disclosure And Criminal Records Privacy Acts, Lynette Meachum

Washington Law Review

Division I of the Washington State Court of Appeals misapplies Washington's Criminal Records Privacy Act (CRPA) in determining whether entire files of police investigative information should be available for public review. The plain text and legislative history of the CRPA indicate that the Washington State Legislature intended the CRPA to apply only to the disclosure of criminal history record information, or the data that appears on a subject's criminal rap sheet. Washington courts should interpret the CRPA narrowly, as an exemption to the broad policy of disclosure established by the state's Public Disclosure Act (PDA). This approach would reconcile the …

An Invasive Species Assessment Protocol: Evaluating Non-Native Plants For Their Impact On Biodiversity, Version 1, Larry E. Morse, John M. Randall, Nancy Benton, Ron Hiebert, Stephanie Lu, Natureserve

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

NatureServe, in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. National Park Service, developed this Invasive Species Assessment Protocol as a tool for assessing, categorizing, and listing non-native invasive vascular plants according to their impact on native species and natural biodiversity in a large geographical area such as a nation, state, province, or ecological region. This protocol is designed to make the process of assessing and listing invasive plants objective and systematic, and to incorporate scientific documentation of the information used to determine each species’ rank. NatureServe’s methodology has previously included assessments of the conservation significance of native species; this …

Black And White: Structural And Functional Aspects Of Dermal Chromatophores Of The Marbled Whiptail Lizard (Cnemidophorus Marmoratus), James Swan May 2004

Black And White: Structural And Functional Aspects Of Dermal Chromatophores Of The Marbled Whiptail Lizard (Cnemidophorus Marmoratus), James Swan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The skin of reptiles is a complex organ with many sensory, regulatory and behavioral functions. Desert reptiles face a suite of challenges as their skin contacts hot-dry environmental surfaces. The marbled whiptail lizard, Cnemidophorus marmoratus (Lacertilia: Teiidae), is found in hot deserts of southeastern New Mexico and western Texas and is often above ground during the hottest times of the day. When active, these lizards encounter a broad range and intensity of visible and infrared wavelengths. The role of the integument in temperature regulation, although poorly understood, is critically important for these diurnal animals. Albedo, coloration, pattern, and in some …

Rawls’S Theory Of Justice From A Utilitarian Perspective, T. D. Rogers May 2004

Rawls’S Theory Of Justice From A Utilitarian Perspective, T. D. Rogers

Macalester Journal of Philosophy

I am very attracted to the theory Rawls has put forth in A Theory of Justice. I feel that he gives a good explanation of how principles of justice can to be arrived at in order to have a fair and just society. However, I do not think that Rawls’s way of doing this is the only way. In many ways, it seems that utilitarianism can be used to justify the same principles that Rawls is advocating. Specifically, it seems that his notion of the veil of ignorance is just a tool used to decide principles in an essentially utilitarian …

Deletion Of The Na/K-Atpase Alpha1-Subunit Gene (Atp1a1) Does Not Prevent Cavitation Of The Preimplantation Mouse Embryo., L C Barcroft, A E Moseley, J B Lingrel, A J Watson May 2004

Deletion Of The Na/K-Atpase Alpha1-Subunit Gene (Atp1a1) Does Not Prevent Cavitation Of The Preimplantation Mouse Embryo., L C Barcroft, A E Moseley, J B Lingrel, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Increases in Na/K-ATPase activity occur concurrently with the onset of cavitation and are associated with increases in Na(+)-pump subunit mRNA and protein expression. We have hypothesized that the alpha1-isozyme of the Na/K-ATPase is required to mediate blastocyst formation. We have tested this hypothesis by characterizing preimplantation development in mice with a targeted disruption of the Na/K-ATPase alpha1-subunit (Atp1a1) using embryos acquired from matings between Atp1a1 heterozygous mice. Mouse embryos homozygous for a null mutation in the Na/K-ATPase alpha1-subunit gene are able to undergo compaction and cavitation. These findings demonstrate that trophectoderm transport mechanisms are maintained in the absence of the …

Defining Archaeological Stratigraphy: Evaluating Microartifact Sampling, David N. Holycross May 2004

Defining Archaeological Stratigraphy: Evaluating Microartifact Sampling, David N. Holycross

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A variety of subsurface methods have been used to discover and evaluate buried archaeological occupations. Researchers such as Stafford (1993,1995) have proposed that micro artifacts are an effective means of defining the archaeological stratigraphy of deposits, but only limited evaluation of this approach has been undertaken. This study tested the utility of microartifacts within a range of sample size and site density characteristics at three Ohio Valley archaeological sites buried within early and late Holocene age landforms. Occupations were typically detected in unit-to-core comparisons, within acceptable margins of error, and microartifacts often revealed a more complex stratigraphy than reflected by …

Developing Producer & Small Processor Owned Meat Marketing Enterprises, Food Processing Center

Food Processing Center: Reports

The Food Processing Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, conducted a survey of meat processors in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Wisconsin in the second half of 2003. The survey was conducted as part of the North Central Initiative for Small Farm Profitability—a USDA funded initiative. The Meat Processors Association in each state provided assistance in sending surveys to over 500 meat processors. Eighty-four meat processors completed the survey for a response rate of 16%.

The survey found that small and very small meat processors in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin are actively involved in providing inspected slaughter and processing services …

Wild Dreamers: Meditations On The Admissibiity Of Dream Talk, Louise Harmon May 2004

Wild Dreamers: Meditations On The Admissibiity Of Dream Talk, Louise Harmon

Washington Law Review

This article presents a mosaic of interrelated meditations on how judges have dealt with the admissibility of dream talk, interspersed with short digressions on the meaning of dreams from a variety of historical and cultural perspectives. In Part I, I begin with theories about dreams from Aristotle, Hobbes, and others. I then tell the story of O.J. Simpson, wild dreamer extraordinaire, interrupted by a Freudian interlude and a speculation about the theories that the jurors may have silently applied to Simpson's dreams of killing his wife. In Part II, I present three wild dreamers from family court: a husband who …

Defining Yield Goals And Management Zones To Minimize Yield And Nitrogen And Phosphorus Fertilizer Recommendation Errors, Jiyul Chang, David E. Clay, Charles G. Carlson, Cheryl L. Reese, Sharon A. Clay, Mike M. Ellsbury May 2004

Defining Yield Goals And Management Zones To Minimize Yield And Nitrogen And Phosphorus Fertilizer Recommendation Errors, Jiyul Chang, David E. Clay, Charles G. Carlson, Cheryl L. Reese, Sharon A. Clay, Mike M. Ellsbury

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Three general approaches (minimize soil nutrient variability, yield, and fertilizer recommendation errors) have been used to assess nutrient management zone boundaries. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of different approaches to define management zones and yield goals on minimizing yield variability and fertilizer recommendation errors. This study used soil nutrient and yield information collected from two east-central South Dakota fields between 1995 and 2000. The crop rotation was corn (Zea mays L.) followed by soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. The four management zone delineation approaches tested were to: (i) sample areas impacted by old …
