Predators, Prey Refuges, And The Spatial Scaling Of Density-Dependent Prey Mortality, Graham E. Forrester, Mark A. Steele May 2004

Predators, Prey Refuges, And The Spatial Scaling Of Density-Dependent Prey Mortality, Graham E. Forrester, Mark A. Steele

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We tested the biological cause of density-dependent mortality in the bridled goby (Coryphopterus glaucofraenum), a small coral reef fish, and evaluated whether this knowledge allowed us to detect density dependence at different spatial scales in natural habitats. To identify the biological cause of density dependence, we manipulated both population density and the availability of shelter (crevices used as refuges from predators) in small plots of continuous reef. We detected strong density-dependent mortality in plots with few refuges, but mortality was density independent in plots with abundant refuges, indicating that limited shelter causes density dependence. Predator density was unrelated …

Beta-Normal Distribution: Bimodality Properties And Application, Felix Famoye, Carl Lee, Nicholas Eugene May 2004

Beta-Normal Distribution: Bimodality Properties And Application, Felix Famoye, Carl Lee, Nicholas Eugene

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The beta-normal distribution is characterized by four parameters that jointly describe the location, the scale and the shape properties. The beta-normal distribution can be unimodal or bimodal. This paper studies the bimodality properties of the beta-normal distribution. The region of bimodality in the parameter space is obtained. The beta-normal distribution is applied to fit a numerical bimodal data set. The beta-normal fits are compared with the fits of mixture-normal distribution through simulation.

Fisheries Research Report No. 147 - Quantification Of Changes In Recreational Catch And Effort On Blue Swimmer Crabs In Cockburn Sound And Geographe Bay, Neil R. Sumner, B E. Malseed May 2004

Fisheries Research Report No. 147 - Quantification Of Changes In Recreational Catch And Effort On Blue Swimmer Crabs In Cockburn Sound And Geographe Bay, Neil R. Sumner, B E. Malseed

Fisheries Research Reports

Information on the size of the recreational catch was required to address resource allocation issues between recreational and commercial crabbers in Cockburn Sound and Geographe Bay. Management measures designed to allocate more of the catch to the recreational sector were put in place prior to this study at both locations. Estimates of the recreational catch were required to evaluate the effectiveness of these new management measures by comparing the catch shares with a survey conducted in 1996/97.

A 12-month creel survey of recreational boat-based and shore-based crabbing in Cockburn Sound was conducted between September 2001 and August 2002 and in …

Synchronizing Keyframe Facial Animation To Multiple Text-To-Speech Engines And Natural Voice With Fast Response Time, William H. Pechter May 2004

Synchronizing Keyframe Facial Animation To Multiple Text-To-Speech Engines And Natural Voice With Fast Response Time, William H. Pechter

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This thesis aims to create an automated lip-synchronization system for real-time applications. Specifically, the system is required to be fast, consist of a limited number of keyframes with small memory requirements, and create fluid and believable animations that synchronize with text-to-speech engines as well as raw voice data. The algorithms utilize traditional keyframe animation and a novel method of keyframe selection. Additionally, phoneme-to-keyframe mapping, synchronization, and simple blending rules are employed. The algorithms provide blending between keyframe images, borrow information from neighboring phonemes, accentuate phonemes b, p and m, differentiate between keyframes for phonemes with allophonic variations, and provide prosodromic …

Enhancing Expressiveness Of Speech Through Animated Avatars For Instant Messaging And Mobile Phones, Joseph E. Pechter May 2004

Enhancing Expressiveness Of Speech Through Animated Avatars For Instant Messaging And Mobile Phones, Joseph E. Pechter

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This thesis aims to create a chat program that allows users to communicate via an animated avatar that provides believable lip-synchronization and expressive emotion. Currently many avatars do not attempt to do lip-synchronization. Those that do are not well synchronized and have little or no emotional expression. Most avatars with lip synch use realistic looking 3D models or stylized rendering of complex models. This work utilizes images rendered in a cartoon style and lip-synchronization rules based on traditional animation. The cartoon style, as opposed to a more realistic look, makes the mouth motion more believable and the characters more appealing. …

Final Report For The Darpa/Nsf Interdisciplinary Study On Human–Robot Interaction, Jennifer L. Burke, Robin Roberson Murphy, Erika Rogers, Vladimir J. Lumelsky, Jean Scholtz

Computer Science and Software Engineering

As part of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency/National Science Foundation study on human–robot interaction (HRI), over sixty representatives from academia, government, and industry participated in an interdisciplinary workshop, which allowed roboticists to interact with psychologists, sociologists, cognitive scientists, communication experts and human–computer interaction specialists to discuss common interests in the field of HRI, and to establish a dialogue across the disciplines for future collaborations. We include initial work that was done in preparation for the workshop, links to keynote and other presentations, and a summary of the findings, outcomes, and recommendations that were generated by the participants. Findings of …

Bioguided Processing: A Paradigm Change In Food Production, Robert E. Ward, Heribert J. Watzke, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, J. Bruce German

Dairy Science

The effort to sequence the human genome, and subsequently to make the results publicly available, has created a new paradigm in the biological sciences. Now that we have access to the blueprint of our very structure and those of organisms from viruses to plants to animals, a mechanistic understanding of all the processes involved in our growth and metabolism is possible. Characterization of the genetic differences among us is underway, and should provide the information basis for a new approach to individual health. The challenge to the food industry will be to create product lines that will address individual dietary …

Buried States, Darryl Francis May 2004

Buried States, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

Recently, I noted that the state name Oregon is buried in the word 'foregone'; could I find other examples? I decided to concentrate on state names with six letters or fewer (Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Utah), ignoring words that were obviously derived from the state names concerned (such as Hawaiitic, meaning Hawaiian-like, and Oregonite, a mineral found in Oregon). Eventually I found examples from all but Hawaii.

Us Presidents: Transadditions, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

Darryl Francis (W2004-25) requests transadditions of the names of eight US Presidents. There are many to choose from in each case, apart from McKinley; but this is counter-balanced by the statement of Harrison's policies, and some connections to other Presidents.

Influence Of Poultry Litter On Dark Tobacco Growth And Soil Nutrient Availability, Jason Simmons May 2004

Influence Of Poultry Litter On Dark Tobacco Growth And Soil Nutrient Availability, Jason Simmons

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Due to the relatively high value of dark tobacco compared with fertilizer costs, nitrogen is recommended at levels as high as 338 kg ha"1. Such rates of inorganic fertilizers increase the osmotic pressure of the soil solution and soil acidity, often causing reduced stands, Mn toxicity, Mo and Ca deficiencies, and reduced yield and quality of the cured leaf (Sims et al., 1984). Poultry litter utilized as a nutrient source is an inexpensive alternative to this dilemma due to its relatively neutral or alkaline composition. However, due the amount of chloride present in poultry litter, the University of Kentucky advises …

Roadside Memorial Practices: An Examination Of Landscapes Of Commemoration In Warren County, Kentucky, Michael Briggs May 2004

Roadside Memorial Practices: An Examination Of Landscapes Of Commemoration In Warren County, Kentucky, Michael Briggs

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Roadside memorials commemorating the death of automobile crash victims are scattered throughout the Kentucky landscape. This persistent cultural practice contains symbolic elements oftentimes indicative of religious connotations. Because there is a constitutional separation of church and government in the United States, these memorials can prelude controversy if located on state-maintained rights-of-way. This study examines Warren County, Kentucky, and analyzes the spatial distribution of these memorials on the landscape and the cultural implications to society because of their ties to death and dying. Scientific research in various fields of psychology, sociology, folk studies, geoscience, and religious studies was analyzed, including religious …

No More Walls! The Nonobligatory Ordinances Contained In The Law And The Creation Of One New Man In Christ: Ephesians 2:11--22, James B. Joseph

Faculty Dissertations

"No More Walls! The Nonobligatory Ordinances Contained in the Law and the Creation of One New Man in Christ: Ephesians 2:11-22" provides an in-depth exegesis of Eph 2:11-22 shedding new light on God's desired unity among all believers. In this passage, Paul uses three metaphorical images to teach his predominately Gentile addressees how close-knit God wants their unity to be with Him and one another. Firstly, Paul uses metaphorical imagery depicting Christ as having done away with the Jewish and Gentile believers' hostility the same as if He had removed a "party-wall" that had existed between their personal contiguous residences. …
