Semiparametric Regression In Capture-Recapture Modelling, O. Gimenez, C. Barbraud, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, S. Jenouvrier, B.T. Morgan
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Capture-recapture models were developed to estimate survival using data arising from marking and monitoring wild animals over time. Variation in the survival process may be explained by incorporating relevant covariates. We develop nonparametric and semiparametric regression models for estimating survival in capture-recapture models. A fully Bayesian approach using MCMC simulations was employed to estimate the model parameters. The work is illustrated by a study of Snow petrels, in which survival probabilities are expressed as nonlinear functions of a climate covariate, using data from a 40-year study on marked individuals, nesting at Petrels Island, Terre Adelie.

Iowa Physicians: Legitimacy, Institutions, And The Practice Of Medicine, Part Two: Putting Science Into Practice, 1887–1928, Susan C. Lawrence
Department of History: Faculty Publications
The second in a three-part series offering an overview of the history of medicine in Iowa from Euro-American settlement through World War II, this survey like part one, concentrates on physicians, medical institutions, public health, and state laws. Developments in these areas shaped the ways Iowans both received health care and, through legislation, tried to translate medical knowledge and values into public benefits. Such a perspective entails omissions. Physicians were by no means the only people who served the ill and injured between 1887 and 1928. Midwives, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, neighbors, relatives, itinerant healers, and nostrum purveyors all provided a …

Optimal Cdna Microarray Design Using Expressed Sequence Tags For Organisms With Limited Genomic Information, Yian A. Chen, David J. Mckillen, Shuyuan Wu, Matthew J. Jenny, Robert Chapman, Paul S. Gross, Jonas S. Almeida
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Background: Expression microarrays are increasingly used to characterize environmental responses and host-parasite interactions for many different organisms. Probe selection for cDNA microarrays using expressed sequence tags (ESTs) is challenging due to high sequence redundancy and potential cross-hybridization between paralogous genes. In organisms with limited genomic information, like marine organisms, this challenge is even greater due to annotation uncertainty. No general tool is available for cDNA microarray probe selection for these organisms. Therefore, the goal of the design procedure described here is to select a subset of ESTs that will minimize sequence redundancy and characterize potential cross-hybridization while providing functionally representative …

Distance Between Pollen Donor And Recipient Influences Fruiting Success In Slickspot Peppergrass, Lepidium Papilliferum, Ian C. Robertson, Amy C. Ulappa
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Plant populations are often spatially structured owing to limited dispersal of pollen and seed. Mating between neighboring individuals in such populations often leads to reduced reproductive performance relative to matings between distant individuals. This response, which may be a result of inbreeding depression or prezygotic mating barriers, was investigated for slickspot peppergrass, Lepidium papilliferum L. (Brassicaceae), a rare insect-pollinated mustard endemic to sagebrush–steppe habitat in southwestern Idaho. Through hand pollination experiments we found that individual plants receiving pollen from distant sources (75–100 m and 6.5–20 km away) had significantly higher percent fruit sets than those relying on pollen from neighboring …

Three probabilistic models were developed for characterizing the risk of mortality and subacute coagulopathy to Poouli, an endangered nontarget avian species, in broadcast diphacinone-baited areas on Hawaii, USA. For single-day exposure, the risk of Poouli mortality approaches 0. For 5-d exposure, the mean probability of mortality increased to 3% for adult and 8% for juvenile Poouli populations. For Poouli that consume snails containing diphacinone residues for 14 d, the model predicted increased levels of coagulopathy for 0.42 and 11% of adult and juvenile Poouli populations, respectively. Worst-case deterministic risk characterizations predicted acceptable levels of risk for nonthreatened or endangered species …

Capsules And Semantic Regions For Code Visualization And Direct Manipulation Of Live Programs, Kenneth J. Goldman
Capsules And Semantic Regions For Code Visualization And Direct Manipulation Of Live Programs, Kenneth J. Goldman
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
JPie is a visual programming environment supporting live construction of Java applications. Class modifications, such as declaring instance variables and overriding methods, take effect immediately on existing instances of the class to encourage experimentation in an educational setting. Because programs are edited live, editing gestures must transform the program from one well-formed state to another, without intermediate ambiguous states. To accomplish this, JPie’s visual representation provides capsules, which represent logical code units, and semantic regions, which represent different aspects of a program. A capsule’s meaning depends upon its containing semantic region. Similarly, a gesture, which involves manipulation of a capsule, …

Damage Reduction Estimates And Benefit-Cost Ratios For Feral Swine Control From The Last Remnant Of A Basin Marsh System In Florida, Richard M. Engeman, Henry T. Smith, Robert Severson, Mary Ann Severson, John Woolard, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Bernice Constantin, Daniel Griffin
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The introduction of swine (Sus scrofa) has adversely affected the environment of many natural habitats throughout the world. Basin marshes are dwindling ecosystems in Florida that are especially vulnerable to damage by feral swine. In January 2003, the estimated amount of swine damage to the exposed portion of the last remnant of a basin marsh system in Savannas Preserve State Park (SPSP) was 19% (an area of 5 ha). Economic valuations for the swine damage were based on the monetary amounts that wetland regulators have allowed permit applicants to spend in mitigation attempts to replace lost wetland resources. …
