Five adopted fishing rafts were applied in this research to gather relevant data for the investigation from July 1996 to December 2003. There are 146 kinds of species have been found for the total catches, most of the operating area were located at the center of the sea in which the thermal effluent …

Privacy, Free Speech & The Garden Grove Cyber Café Experiment, Brett Stohs Oct 2004

Privacy, Free Speech & The Garden Grove Cyber Café Experiment, Brett Stohs

Duke Law & Technology Review

In response to gang violence at local "cyber cafés," the City Council of Garden Grove, California, passed an ordinance requiring cyber cafés to install video surveillance systems. The constitutionality of the provision was subsequently challenged, and a California Court of Appeal determined that the video surveillance requirement did not violate free speech or privacy protections under either the federal or California Constitutions. This decision was immediately challenged, by commentators and a dissenting judge, as opening the door to Orwellian-type, government intrusions into individuals' personal lives. This iBrief analyzes the appellate court's decision and concludes that not only did the majority …

Heterosis For Grain Yield And Other Agronomic Traits In Foxtail Millet, M. M. Siles, William K. Russell, Lenis Alton Nelson, David D. Baltensperger, Blaine Johnson, L. Dale Van Vleck, Stanley G. Jensen, Gary L. Hein Oct 2004

Heterosis For Grain Yield And Other Agronomic Traits In Foxtail Millet, M. M. Siles, William K. Russell, Lenis Alton Nelson, David D. Baltensperger, Blaine Johnson, L. Dale Van Vleck, Stanley G. Jensen, Gary L. Hein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.] is a largely self-pollinating species that is used as a warm-season annual in the USA. Nearly all cultivars of this species grown in the USA are selections from land races. This research was undertaken to determine whether sufficient high-parent heterosis is expressed in foxtail millet for grain yield and other key traits to justify the development and use of varietal crosses. Seven diverse parents and 21 F2s and 21 F3s produced from biparental crosses were evaluated in five environments in 1996. Genotype x environment interaction was highly significant …

Survey Of Endangered And Special Concern Mussel Species In The Sac, Pomme De Terre, St. Francis, And Black River Systems Of Missouri, 2001-2003, Christian Hudson, M. Christopher Barnhart

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Native mussels of the order Unionoida are the most imperiled major taxonomic group of aquatic animals in the United States. Presently, 70 mussel species are listed as federally threatened or endangered and 19 others as candidates for listing (USFWS website), and many workers believe that more than half of the North American species are in jeopardy. The factors that have led to this situation are manifold. However, in Missouri and elsewhere, the construction of dams and reservoirs over the past century has had perhaps the most serious negative impact on the biota of rivers and on mussels in particular. The …

Review Of Canid Management In Australia For The Protection Of Livestock And Wildlife — Potential Application To Coyote Management, L. R. Allen, P. J. S. Fleming Oct 2004

Review Of Canid Management In Australia For The Protection Of Livestock And Wildlife — Potential Application To Coyote Management, L. R. Allen, P. J. S. Fleming

Sheep and Goat Research Journal

Australia has two introduced canid species — European red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and wild dogs (which include dingoes, Canis lupus dingo, feral domestic dogs C. l. familiaris and their hybrids). Foxes were introduced into mainland Australia in the 1860s and quickly spread (Rolls, 1984; Jarman 1986). This dispersal and establishment is believed linked with the introduction and spread of European wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cunniculus) (Saunders et al., 1995). Except in Tasmania, where previous introductions appear to have been unsuccessful, and in northern Australia, where the climate is unsuitable and rabbits are essentially absent, foxes have become …

Use Of Livestock Guarding Animals To Reduce Predation On Livestock, W. F. Andelt Oct 2004

Use Of Livestock Guarding Animals To Reduce Predation On Livestock, W. F. Andelt

Sheep and Goat Research Journal

Predation by coyotes (Canis latrans), domestic dogs, mountain lions (Felis concolor), black bears (Ursus americanus), red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), and bobcats (Felis rufus) has been a major problem faced by domestic sheep, goat (NASS, 2000), and cattle (NASS, 2001) producers. Predators were reported to kill 273,000 sheep and lambs (NASS, 2000) and 147,000 cattle and calves (NASS, 2001) in the United States, and 61,000 goats in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas (NASS, 2000) during either 1999 or 2000. Several methods, including the use of …

Economic Impact Of Protected Large Carnivores On Sheep Farming In Norway, Leif Jarle Asheim, Ivar Mysterud Oct 2004

Economic Impact Of Protected Large Carnivores On Sheep Farming In Norway, Leif Jarle Asheim, Ivar Mysterud

Sheep and Goat Research Journal

Norway has historically been a stronghold for carnivore predators. Today there are four protected carnivore species, brown bear (Ursus arctos), wolverine (Gulo gulo), wolf (Canis lupus) and lynx (Lynx lynx), together with the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). The carnivore populations were significantly reduced, and wolves and bears almost eradicated nationally during the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries (Ministry of the Environment, 1992; 1996-97). Today, the species are protected, and management calls for restoring demographically and/or genetically viable populations (Ministry of the Environment, 1996-97). Another proposal is to view Norwegian management goals and responsibilities in …
