The Economic Impact Of The Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository On The Economy Of Nevada, Mary Riddel, Martin Boyett, R. Keith Schwer Sep 2003

The Economic Impact Of The Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository On The Economy Of Nevada, Mary Riddel, Martin Boyett, R. Keith Schwer

Publications (YM)

Current Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) operations provide relatively high-wage employment to the Nevada economy and constitute an economically stable proportion of the total gross state product (GSP). If the YMP were discontinued, economic losses, relative to the current economy, would be substantial. In 2000, the YMP contributed $195.7 million to the Nevada economy and an additional $188.6 million in 2001. The YMP was responsible for 3,650 jobs in 2000. This translates into a real disposable income of roughly $131 million earned each year in the state of Nevada.

Seeing, Sensing, And Selection: Modeling Visual Perception In Complex Environments, Roxanne Canosa Sep 2003

Seeing, Sensing, And Selection: Modeling Visual Perception In Complex Environments, Roxanne Canosa

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate human visual perception at the level of eye movements by describing the interaction between vision and action during natural, everyday tasks in a real-world environment. The results of the investigation provide motivation for the development of a biologically-based model of selective visual perception that relies on the relative perceptual conspicuity of certain regions within the field of view. Several experiments were designed and conducted that form the basis for the model. The experiments provide evidence that the visual system is not passive, nor is it general-purpose, but rather it is active and …

Compliant Centrifugal Clutches: Design, Analysis, And Testing, Nathan B. Crane Sep 2003

Compliant Centrifugal Clutches: Design, Analysis, And Testing, Nathan B. Crane

Theses and Dissertations

Existing classes of centrifugal clutch concepts were reviewed. The pseudo-rigid-body model (PRBM), rigid-body replacement synthesis, force-deflection analysis, compliance potential evaluation, and compliant concept evaluation were used to develop effective new centrifugal clutch concepts. These methods helped develop and model four novel compliant centrifugal clutch designs, model two existing designs, and identify a concept with excellent potential for low-cost centrifugal clutch applications. This concept, the floating opposing arm (FOA) clutch, doubles the torque capacity metric relative to existing compliant designs. Torque and engagement speed models for this clutch were developed and verified against four prototype clutches. Additional novel designs devel-oped through …

Fabrication Of And Transport Studies On Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide/Praseodymium Barium Copper Oxide-Type Multilayers., Udom Tipparach Sep 2003

Fabrication Of And Transport Studies On Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide/Praseodymium Barium Copper Oxide-Type Multilayers., Udom Tipparach

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation described herein includes the fabrication of and experimental studies on the family of insulators PrBa2(Cu1−xM x)3O7−δ (PBCMO), with M = Al, Fe, Ni, Zn, Co, Ga, and x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20. The samples were grown by the solid state reaction technique. The purposes was to find a better buffer layer material for fabricating superconducting devices from an YBa2Cu 3O7−δ (YBCO) superconductor. An ideal buffer layer must have the same crystal structure as YBCO, with well-matched lattice parameters, and must also provide adequate electrical resistivity to serve as an insulating layer for YBCO/PBCMO multilayers. If …
