Proceedings Of The 3rd Conference Of Doctoral Education In Design (2003), David Durling, Kazuo Sugiyama
DRS Conference Volumes
The 3rd conference on 'Doctoral Education in Design' was hosted by several Asian design societies in partnership with the Design Research Society, and was held in parallel with the 6th Asian Design Conference, in Tsukuba, Japan, in October 2003. The call for papers stressed an overriding theme of the 'Practice of Research'. We were particularly interested in identifying best practice, and the practical application of best practice, with a focus on organising and teaching the doctorate in design.

Managing Access Control In The Presence Of Mobility, Christine Julien, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Jamie Payton
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The increased pervasiveness of wireless mobile computing devices draws new attention to the need for coordination among small, networked components. The very nature of the environment requires devices to interact even when they meet unpredictably. Because these networks are often decoupled from a fixed infrastructure, reliance on centralized servers for authentication and access policies is impractical. Access control is crucial in such systems, and applications must directly manipulate and examine access policies because they require full control of their data. In this paper, we explore the essential features of general access control policies tailored to the needs of agent coordination …

Active Coordination In Ad Hoc Networks, Christine Julien, Gruia-Catalin Roman
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The increasing ubiquity of communicating mobile devices and vastly different mobile application needs have led to the emergence of middleware models for ad hoc networks that simplify application programming. One such system, EgoSpaces, addresses specific needs of individual applications, allowing them to define what data is included in their operating context using declarative specifications constraining properties of data, agents that own the data, hosts on which those agents are running, and attributes of the ad hoc network. In the resulting coordination model, application agents interact with a dynamically changing environment through a set of views, or custom defined projections of …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Near-infrared spectroscopic tomography was used to measure the properties of 24 mammographically normal breasts to quantify whole-breast absorption and scattering spectra and to evaluate which tissue composition characteristics can be determined from these spectra. The absorption spectrum of breast tissue allows quantification of (i) total hemoglobin concentration, (ii) hemoglobin oxygen saturation, and (iii) water concentration, whereas the scattering spectrum provides information about the size and number density of cellular components and structural matrix elements. These property data were tested for correlation to demographic information, including subject age, body mass index, breast size, and radiographic …

An EUV source that delivers a laser beam asymmetrical relative to first collection optics. The first collection optics has an opening for the laser beam that is positioned so that the laser beam is directed toward the plasma off-axis relative to the collection optics. Thus, the strongest EUV radiation is not blocked by the target production hardware.
Exotendons For Assistance Of Human Locomotion, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert
Exotendons For Assistance Of Human Locomotion, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Background: Powered robotic exoskeletons for assistance of human locomotion are currently
under development for military and medical applications. The energy requirements for such devices are excessive, and this has become a major obstacle for practical applications. Legged locomotion in many animals, however, is very energy efficient. We propose that poly-articular elastic mechanisms are a major contributor to the economy of locomotion in such specialized animals. Consequently, it should be possible to design unpowered assistive devices that make effective use of similar mechanisms.
Methods: A passive assistive technology is presented, based on long elastic cords attached to an
exoskeleton and guided …

Statistical results from a survey of 93 passes through the high-latitude extension of the plasma sheet of electron data from the Hydra instrument on the Polar spacecraft show that the values for electron density can range from 0.01 to 0.5 cm–3 with an average value around 0.1 cm–3 on the poleward side and 0.3 cm–3 on the equatorward side. Electron mean energy is found to have an average value near 900 eV on the equatorward side and 400 eV on the poleward side but varies from 100 eV to 4 keV. These values for density and mean …

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances
I think Cooperative Extension is the best out-of-classroom learning experience ever yet devised anywhere in the world. I say that every chance I get to the various audiences I address throughout the year, and I say it to you today: The work you do the, the way you do it, the expertise and passion you bring to it, the belief you have in it, and the commitment you make to it makes Cooperative Extension the absolutely best out-of-classroom learning experience available to Nebraskans today. I thank you, each of you, for making that true.
