Grasshoppers And Mormon Crickets: Fighting Them For Nearly 100 Years, Usu Extension
Grasshoppers And Mormon Crickets: Fighting Them For Nearly 100 Years, Usu Extension
All Current Publications
Grasshoppers are a threat to crops and rangeland across the West, but Utah always has had a special historical relationship with Mormon Crickets. Anabrus simplex has been known as a Mormon Cricket since 1848 when hordes of the insect started eating the early Mormon settlers’ much-needed crops.

Print, electronic, and other forms of communications media have been consistently perceived and characterized by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as tools to assist in spreading the gospel message throughout the world. Given this perspective, the Church from its earliest days has used various forms of media as vehicles of communication. It has produced or been affiliated with the production of numerous newspapers and magazines in the United States and in several countries worldwide. In the twentieth century, the Church embraced electronic media technologies promptly. Our goal as mass communications scholars was to compile a …
Metrics For Evaluating Human-Robot Interactions, Michael A. Goodrich, Dan R. Olsen Jr.
Metrics For Evaluating Human-Robot Interactions, Michael A. Goodrich, Dan R. Olsen Jr.
Faculty Publications
Metrics for evaluating the quality of a human-robot interface are introduced. The autonomy of a robot is measured by its neglect time. The robot attention demand metric measures how much of the user’s attention is involved with instructing a robot. The free-time and fan-out metrics are two ways to measure this demand. Each of them leads to estimates of the interaction effort. Reducing interaction effort without diminishing task effectiveness is the goal of human-robot interaction design.
Motion Planning Using Potential Fields, Randal W. Beard, Timothy W. Mclain
Motion Planning Using Potential Fields, Randal W. Beard, Timothy W. Mclain
Faculty Publications
The objective of these notes is to describe a reactive approach to motion planning for mobile robots. In a reactive approach, trajectories are not planned explicitly. Rather, robot interactions are defined explicitly and the robot motion is said to "emerge." The drawback of reactive methods is that it is sometimes difficult to get the robot to do exactly what you want. The reactive approach that will be described in these notes is called the "virtual fields" method and is commonly used in robotics.
Using Low-Threshold Applications And Software Templates To Improve Efficiency In An Introductory Statistics Course, Jason K. Mcdonald
Using Low-Threshold Applications And Software Templates To Improve Efficiency In An Introductory Statistics Course, Jason K. Mcdonald
Faculty Publications
This study was an exploratory study in improving efficiency in university courses by using low-cost methods of design and development that can be easily managed by university faculty. To explore this issue, we developed a lesson for the Statistics department at Brigham Young University using low-threshold applications (uses of technology that are low-cost and easy to learn) and software templates. We evaluated the lesson as a possible method to decrease the number of hours instructors were required to spend teaching in class. We discovered that students responded positively to the lesson, and that the methods of lesson design and development …
Spectral Measures And Perceptual Ratings Of Hypokinetic Dysarthria, Christopher Dromey
Spectral Measures And Perceptual Ratings Of Hypokinetic Dysarthria, Christopher Dromey
Faculty Publications
Ten individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) and hypokinetic dysarthria were compared with age-matched neurologically normal (NN) speakers on acoustic measures from speaking and vowel phonation tasks as well as on perceptual ratings of connected speech. Listeners identified differences between the groups when asked to judge the severity of vocal and articulatory impairment during reading. Several conventional acoustic measures failed to differentiate speakers with PD from NN speakers. However, measures of the shape (statistical moments) of the long term average spectrum (LTAS) revealed statistically significant differences between the groups across vowel phonation, reading and monologue tasks. The ease of computation of …
New Approaches To Gortler And Tollmien-Schlichting Boundary-Layer Instabilities, Vijay Kalburgi
New Approaches To Gortler And Tollmien-Schlichting Boundary-Layer Instabilities, Vijay Kalburgi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A detailed understanding of the physical processes that lead to instability and transition in the external viscous boundary layers of airfoils has been the goal of researchers for decades. This study seeks to enhance our understanding of Gortler and Tollmien-Schlichting instabilities through a critical review of prior theoretical methodology and fundamental experiments, the development of dimensionally consistent disturbance equations, and novel interpretation of the resulting flow physics revealed by their solutions to explain the process of transition.
Gortler vortices arise in boundary layers along concave surfaces due to centrifugal effects and these vortices in combination with other instabilities play an …
Numerical Study Of Two-Dimensional Secondary Injection Into A Mach 3.5 Freestream, Stephen C. Coghill
Numerical Study Of Two-Dimensional Secondary Injection Into A Mach 3.5 Freestream, Stephen C. Coghill
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Upstream interaction within a dual-mode scramjet engine is investigated numerically. The upstream interaction is investigated by increasing the freestream-to-injector pressure ratio. The constant area duct and sudden expansion geometries are used to achieve these results. Analysis using the symmetry boundary condition is compared to the full boundary condition for the constant area duct. Numerical analysis of the Mach 3.5 freestream is conducted using normal sonic injection of nitrogen gas to create the upstream interaction. Comparisons, where applicable, are made to experimental results. Due to the high speed of the flowfield, oblique shockwaves are present causing numerical convergence difficult to achieve. …
Optimal Feedback Control For Ship Roll Motion Under Sea States, Anusit Anmanatarkul
Optimal Feedback Control For Ship Roll Motion Under Sea States, Anusit Anmanatarkul
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The primary influences of ship motion are roll motion. The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss a means to reduce the roll amplitude of ship motion in the case of zero forward speed using the roll mitigation device known as the flume tank, or U-tube, tank. Passive control and active control are studied. Optimal feedback control is the designated algorithm for activated roll mitigation device. The assumed model in this study is a submarine chaser. The linear coupled equation of swaying, rolling, and yawing motion of this assumed model is studied. The roll motion of this vessel is investigated …
