Lan-Yi Chen presented a graduate recital at 6 p.m. on April 17, 2003 in Davis Hall at the University of Northern Iowa School of Music. The recital was presented in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music Degree requirements in piano performance. The recital program consisted of pieces by Domenico Scarlatti, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy, and Alberto Ginastera.

Jennifer Iverson, pianist, presented a graduate recital at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2003 in Davis Hall at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the University of Northern Iowa campus. The recital was given in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. The program included works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Maurice Ravel, Lili Boulanger, and Arnold Schonberg. The following paragraphs provide commentary on the programmed pieces.

Block Scheduling And Music Education: Building Time For Effective Education, Laura J. Horst

Block scheduling is investigated in this study as a strategy of scheduling, specifically in the secondary vocal music program. There is a need to document the process of effective teaching in vocal music for extended teaching periods. Although there are certain agreed upon elements of successful music programs, much is unknown about teaching in the block format in vocal music. Nationally, music education programs are calling for an increased level of awareness in alternative scheduling, and therefore, teacher preparation programs have answered with various courses and integrated attempts to prepare preservice teachers as well as retrain experienced teachers to work …

On December 4, 2001, federal agents raided the offices of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, arrested the organization’s officers, and froze $5 million worth of assets. Ten days later on December 14, 2001, the Global Relief Fund suffered the same fate when its assets were seized, and its co-founder Rabih Haddad was arrested. That same day Benevolence International’s assets were also frozen, and its U.S. citizen president, Enaam Arnaout, was arrested and taken into custody on charges of providing material support to terrorism. Overall, pesticide use is growing in developing countries. United States' pesticide use changed in content, but remains substantial in volume. Critics of pesticide policy, including many of the speakers at this symposium, are concerned that pesticide problems are worsening. Surprisingly, thirty years after the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act ("FIFRA") reforms and the victory over DDT, the critics are not yet prepared to declare victory. Even worse from the perspective of environmental pressure groups is the change in attitude toward DDT, a substance whose name invokes extraordinary invective, where the current picture is not quite what the advocacy groups …

Examining The Equivalence Of Rater Groups In 360-Degree Feedback For Use In Leadership Development, Amy Fitzgibbons

This study assessed the seldom-considered aspect of measurement equivalence across the three most common rater groups in 360-degree feedback systems. The graded response model for polytomous items was used to assess differential functioning of items and tests and applied to an archival data set of 664 ratees to determine the equivalence of peer, subordinate, and supervisor ratings of four leadership competencies. The results indicate that the leadership competencies were invariant across the three rater groups. The results and conclusions produced are discussed with practical implications in mind.

Market Valuation Of Corporate Diversification In The Presence Of Internal Capital Markets In Emerging Countries, Supannee Buasook

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This study examines the valuation of corporate diversification in three emerging countries: Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Over the period of study (1992–2001 for Thailand and 1994–2001 for Indonesia and the Philippines), it is found that there is evidence of diversification discount in all three countries. The largest amount of discount exists in the Philippines (60.1%), followed by Indonesia (25.5%) and Thailand (15.1%).

Then, the sample is divided into two sub-periods: before the crisis (1992–1996) and after the crisis (1997–2001). Before the crisis, the diversification discount existed only in the Philippines, with the average of 49%. There is not enough …
