Family Connectedness And Sexual Risk-Taking Among Urban Youth Attending Alternative High Schools, Christine M Markham, Susan R Tortolero, S Liliana Escobar-Chaves, Guy S Parcel, Ronald Harrist, Robert C Addy

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

CONTEXT: Youth in alternative high schools engage in risky sexual behavior at higher rates than do their peers in regular schools, placing themselves at an increased risk of sexually transmitted disease and unintended pregnancy. Family connectedness is associated with reduced adolescent sexual risk-taking, although this association has not been tested among alternative school youth.

METHODS: A sample of 976 urban, predominantly minority alternative high school students in Houston, Texas, were surveyed in 2000-2002. Survey data were analyzed using logistic regression to determine whether family connectedness is related to sexual risk-taking.

RESULTS: Overall, 68% of students reported ever having had sex. …

Factors That Affect Party Institutionalization: Ethnicity, Electoral Systems, And Economics In East Europe, Joe Robbins Jan 2003

Factors That Affect Party Institutionalization: Ethnicity, Electoral Systems, And Economics In East Europe, Joe Robbins

Masters Theses

This thesis examines party institutionalization in East Europe. Ethnicity, electoral systems and economics are variables explored in the substantive chapters. Many political science studies examine the number of parties in East Europe, but only a few studies study party institutionalization. Chapter 1 establishes the foundations for this thesis and provides an overview of each chapter.

In the second chapter, I analyze the relationship between institutionalized parties and ethnicity. Kitschelt (1992) argues that in the absence of institutionalized parties, voters look to other factors, such as ethnicity, when voting. The results from this chapter report that ethnicity plays a limited role …

Corporatist Features Of The Security Sector In Democratizing Countries: A Cross-Regional Analysis Of Brazil And Romania, Sebastian Huluban Jan 2003

Corporatist Features Of The Security Sector In Democratizing Countries: A Cross-Regional Analysis Of Brazil And Romania, Sebastian Huluban

Masters Theses

The topic of the thesis is to analyse, from a cross-regional comparative perspective, the relationship between the corporatist features and the civil-military relations in two democratising countries, Romania and Brazil. I choose Romania and Brazil because these two countries present peculiar features regarding the civil-military relations within their regions, and, in addition, these countries share a peculiar heritage regarding the corporatist arrangements both in terms of intellectual-cultural legacy and contingent decisions. The paper encompasses a double attempt as an answer to the current appeals within the civil-military relations literature for new analytical perspectives. First, I will show that the corporatist …

Democratic Consolidation In Eastern Europe, Michael Rudy Jan 2003

Democratic Consolidation In Eastern Europe, Michael Rudy

Masters Theses

This thesis examines democratic consolidation in five Eastern European countries. The Baltic States have consolidated their democratic regimes but Romania and Bulgaria have struggled to do so. I attempt to explain why this has happened. In chapter one, I introduce the topic and provide an overview for the next six chapters.

In the second chapter, I examine the literature that pertains to this topic. The literature focuses on several aspects of democratic consolidation. I examine how economic growth, privatization, foreign direct investment, modes of transition, violence, initial post-communist political contest winner, electoral laws, and the citizenship law all play an …

A Trial Of The Effects Of Intercessory Prayer On Student Performance, Christopher Clark

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present study is to test the efficacy of intercessory prayer on academic performance. One hundred and four students enrolled in a college business class and 63 regular church attendees volunteered to participate in the study. Design for the study was a matched groups reversal design. The students were paired according to their GPA's and randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first test of the semester constituted a baseline measure. For the first four-week period of the class and the first test, neither of the groups received prayer. Next, the church goers each received the …

The Effect Of Choice Order On Off Task Behavior In A Child With Autism, Lisa R. Cole Jan 2003

The Effect Of Choice Order On Off Task Behavior In A Child With Autism, Lisa R. Cole

Masters Theses

This research project was designed to examine the effects of child-choice versus clinician-choice over the ordering of activities during speech-language therapy sessions. The dependent variables included disruptive/inappropriate behavior, non-task related verbal behavior, and redirection to the task. The independent variable was the presentation of choice over the ordering of activities within a therapy session.

The subject in this case study was a nine-year-old boy diagnosed with autism. At the beginning of each therapy session either the child or the clinician decided on the ordering of activities. A picture board and picture cards showed the activities that would be completed in …

Regional Dispersal Of Daphnia Lumholtzi In North America Inferred From Issr Genetic Markers, G. Matthew Groves Jan 2003

Regional Dispersal Of Daphnia Lumholtzi In North America Inferred From Issr Genetic Markers, G. Matthew Groves

Masters Theses

The exotic zooplankter Daphnia lumholtzi is believed to have been introduced into Fairfield Lake, TX in 1983. Since introduction, D. lumholtzi has spread throughout the Midwest and Southeast United States. Due to its large head and tail spines, it may be less susceptible than native species to predation and therefore pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems. Development of management practices calls for study of the dispersal and potential impact of D. lumholtzi on invaded ecosystems.

Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used in an effort to determine dispersal patterns of D. lumholtzi. Previous studies have shown that ISSRs possess …

The Effects Of Social Fields On The Telepathic Reception Of Information, Jamie A. Yarnall Jan 2003

The Effects Of Social Fields On The Telepathic Reception Of Information, Jamie A. Yarnall

Masters Theses

Field theories are increasingly used as explanations for extrasensory perception, suggesting the existence of some form of collective mind or social field. These theories imply that groups of individuals create fields that can contain and transfer information. The current study explored the telepathic transfer of information regarding randomly selected target locations. Groups of participants "sent" target locations to individuals, observed on close circuit television, who were either members of the group (ingroup) or not members (outgroup). We hypothesized that ingroup members would achieve above chance hit rates while outgroup members would score below chance. Approximately 30 senders sent 16 trials …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Coping Strategies And The Coming Out Process Of Gay Males In College Fraternities, Jack R. Trump

Masters Theses

Purpose

The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to identify existing themes in the lived experiences of five gay males who disclosed their sexuality to some or all of their fraternity brothers while still an undergraduate member. Interviews with the participants were conducted to identify (1) their perceptions of the environment within the fraternity in regard to sexuality, (2) coping strategies used to conceal their sexuality, (3) variables that facilitated coming-out to their fraternities, and ( 4) their approach to coming-out to their fraternities.

Methodology

Participants were obtained by means of a Call for Participants Email sent over a …

The Mermaid's Dress: Marriage And Empire In The Voyage Out And Mrs Dalloway, Melissa Wharton-Smith Jan 2003

The Mermaid's Dress: Marriage And Empire In The Voyage Out And Mrs Dalloway, Melissa Wharton-Smith

Masters Theses

This thesis examines how socio-historical influences shape the protagonists of Virginia Woolf’s The Voyage Out (1915) and Mrs. Dalloway (1925)-- Rachel Vinrace and Clarissa Dalloway. During the writing of these two novels, attitudes about roles for women before and after World War I shifted as pre-war domestic strife was replaced by a post-war push to return to normalcy. Throughout the period, imperialist ideology demanded that women conform to traditional gender roles by marrying and reproducing. Woolf depicts this pressure as it affects her two protagonists.

In The Voyage Out, the British Empire's imposing presence is exhibited through the setting of …

The Synthesis Of 2-(1-Indenyl)-Phenol: A Potential Ligand For Metallocene Polymerization Catalysts; And, Ω-Iodoalkyl(Methyl) Malonate Esters: Synthesis And Application In Bioconjugate Chemistry, Sara E. Bendler

Masters Theses

Chapter I:

Metallocene catalysis is an important division of polymerization chemistry. The design of appropriate ligands for metallocene catalysts has focused on stereochemical control and structural diversity. The synthesis of the potential ligand 2-(1-indenyl)-phenol has been developed. Indenyl phenol ligands offer advancements over cyclopentadienyl ligands because the steric and electronic properties of the catalyst could be tailored to suit individual polymerization reactions. 2-(1-Indenyl)-phenol was synthesized with an overall yield of 4% and characterized with 1H NMR and 13C NMR.

Chapter II:

A large percentage of breast malignancies overexpress the nuclear estrogen receptor (ER) protein. Binding to nuclear receptors …

Behavioral Aspects Of Apolipoprotein E Knockout Mice, Melissa T. Litherland Jan 2003

Behavioral Aspects Of Apolipoprotein E Knockout Mice, Melissa T. Litherland

Masters Theses

Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a lipid transporting protein that has been shown to play a vital role in nerve repair and remodeling. Previous studies have shown that apoE is highly expressed in human and mouse olfactory bulbs. ApoE deficiency in apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE-KO) mice leads to considerable delay in olfactory nerve repair and deficits in olfactory functioning. Olfactory function is necessary for a number of social behaviors in mice. Loss of olfaction can greatly reduce social behaviors. Since apoE-KO mice display olfactory dysfunction, this deficit may result in alterations in social behavior. Olfactory function was assessed in apoE-KO mice …

The Impact Of Immigration On U.S. Trade: A Comparative Study, Janice Yuen Lai Yap Jan 2003

The Impact Of Immigration On U.S. Trade: A Comparative Study, Janice Yuen Lai Yap

Masters Theses

Immigrants play an important role in affecting bilateral trade. Immigrant links to the home country include knowledge of home country markets, language, preferences, and business contacts.

This paper investigates the link between immigration and trade using United States trade data. It analyzes the original study by Gould and the reduced trading partners' study, compares two different time period, and analyzes the role of new variables in the trade equation. The results of this study are divided into three sections.

The first section of this study which compares Gould's original study to the modified Gould's study reveals that immigrants influence loses …

Transitional Needs Of First Year Graduate Students With Housing Assistantships, Dixie L. Sullenger

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to identify transitional needs of first year graduate students who have housing assistantships. Previous research in this area identified academic adjustment, student support services, assistantship experiences, and graduate student socialization as important variables to examine. A qualitative study was conducted using a focus group interview of four participants to examine these variables. Using the constant comparative method of data analysis, the four transitional areas listed above were confirmed as the primary challenges to a successful transition from undergraduate to graduate school for first year graduate students with housing assistantships. The results also suggest that …
