Creating Community Through Symbolic Discourse: An Analysis Of Jesse Jackson's Rhetoric At The Democratic National Conventions, 1984--2000, Lance Michael Young

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson has addressed the Democratic National Convention through five consecutive election cycles. Jackson's political involvement works to challenge the majority value system. Each address aims to create a community consisting of minority voices in America by bringing them into the Democratic Party in hopes of changing national policy. Metaphorical strategy is used to symbolically create a community consisting of minority voices, the Democratic Party, and Jackson himself as the prophetic leader. Symbolically unifying the community against a common enemy strengthens Jackson's community.

Evaluating Relative Productivity And Efficiency Of Hospitality Properties Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Elena Igorevna Champaner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The concept of productivity and efficiency is essential to any hospitality company as such companies usually face severe competition and operate in an ever-changing business environment. Purely financial measures of evaluating hospitality efficiency and productivity are not sufficient in the long-term. This study makes an attempt to evaluate the productivity and efficiency of hospitality operations using a nonparametric technique called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). DEA is a special linear programming model for deriving the comparative efficiency of multiple-input multiple-output decision-making units. In many industries, the use of DEA helped properties identify millions of dollars of annual expense savings not identifiable …

A Study Of The Effects Of Lithium Perchlorate On Poly(Ethylene Oxide), (Peo) Melt Dynamic Behavior Using Fabry-Perot Interferometry, Radoslav Boykov Bogoslovov

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Poly(ethylene oxide)/lithium perchlorate (PEO/LiClO4) complexes are widely studied as a prototype solid polymer electrolyte in rechargeable lithium-polymer batteries. Characterizing the structure and dynamics of the system in its molten state is important for understanding the role of the polymer environment in lithium ion transport and conductivity. We implement a fiber-optic coupled Fabry-Perot interferometer to investigate the electrolyte elastic properties and structural response times, which are both related to the intrachain local mobility and therefore to ion diffusion. We propose a simple and inexpensive fiber-optic experimental design combining two experimental techniques, Fabry-Perot interferometry and photon correlation spectroscopy. Our tests and evaluation …

Investigation Of Phosphines As Potential Host Materials In Blue Dye-Doped Organic Light Emitting Devices, Murukkuwadura Aruni Desilva Jan 2003

Investigation Of Phosphines As Potential Host Materials In Blue Dye-Doped Organic Light Emitting Devices, Murukkuwadura Aruni Desilva

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently, the most efficient organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) are based on dye-doped OLEDs. The major obstacle has been developing a host material for blue OLEDs that has sufficiently high energy of emission (<380nm) to facilitate energy transfer to the dye. Previous studies of bis(diphenylphosphino)-E-Stilbene (P-STIL) suggested that tertiary aromatic diphosphines (TAPs) may be suitable candidates. Therefore, the P-containing materials, 4,4'-bis(naphthylphenylphosphino)biphenyl (alpha-P-NPD) and 4,4'-bis(diphenylphosphino)biphenyl (P-DDB) were synthesized and the photophysical properties were evaluated and compared to P-STIL. The TAPs were shown to be sensitive to air oxidation both in solution and the solid state and that the origin of the high energy emission of P-STIL was from the oxide. Furthermore, all TAPs were shown to exhibit dual emission, which may result from different structural geometries about the P-atom in the excited state. Theses studies conclusively demonstrate that TAPs are not suitable as host materials fro blue dye-doped OLEDs, but the fully oxidized materials, which are more stable and emit at higher energy may be better candidates.

Structural Characterization Of Polyurethane Foam And Implications Of Aging, Gayani Chandima Kodippili Jan 2003

Structural Characterization Of Polyurethane Foam And Implications Of Aging, Gayani Chandima Kodippili

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Polyurethane (PU) foam is used as a shock mitigation material in the national stockpile, which degrades over time. A replacement foam, ReCrete was shown to exhibit acceptable mechanical properties after aging, but fractured with impact testing. Previously, processing ReCrete foam at elevated temperature resulted in a decrease of the modulus (stiffness), which was believed to be related to chemical changes during processing. In this thesis, chemical and structural analysis of ReCrete processed at 25°C and 85°C were performed using photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy, IR imaging, and thermal analysis. The change in modulus was related to thermal decomposition of uretoneimine linkages in …

A Relational Post-Processing Approach For Forms Recognition, Zhenxing Mao Jan 2003

A Relational Post-Processing Approach For Forms Recognition, Zhenxing Mao

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is used to convert paper documents into electronic form. Unfortunately the technology is not perfect and the output can be erroneous. Conversion then is generally augmented by manual error detection and correction procedures which can be very costly; One approach to minimizing cost is to apply an OCR post processing system that will reduce the amount of manual correction required. The post processor takes advantage of knowledge associated with a particular project; In this thesis, we look into the feasibility of using integrity constraints to detect and correct errors in forms recognition. The general idea is …

Strategic Training In The Use Of Causal Diagrams: Facilitation Of Superior Mental Models, Anne Seyer Poliquin Jan 2003

Strategic Training In The Use Of Causal Diagrams: Facilitation Of Superior Mental Models, Anne Seyer Poliquin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study focused on the influence of strategic learning on the construction of causal diagrams and their role in text learning. A causal diagram is an instructional adjunct designed to enhance text comprehension by providing a visual representation integrating elements of cause and effect. The Integrated Model of Text and Picture Comprehension (IMTPC) (Schnotz & Bannert, 1999) suggests that diagrams improve learning because they facilitate the construction of mental models via simultaneous comprehension of visual and text elements. However, there is no information on how to achieve this benefit consistently. Scevak, Moore, and Kirby (1993) have demonstrated that this benefit …

Woodrow Wilson's Principled Preaching On United States Foreign Policy, 1913--1917, Roger E Carey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Woodrow Wilson based his ideals and actions as president on principles shaped by his religious beliefs. While Wilson scholars have examined his idealism, few have traced the religious roots of the principles that formed his ideology. During the period of American neutrality from 1914 to 1917, he made numerous public speeches that afford insight into his religious beliefs, their relationship to his understanding of presidential leadership, good government, and especially foreign policy. Wilson believed that good leaders used oratory to inform the people of important issues and guide them to support the best policies. His speeches reflect what he thought …

Previous low-resolution spectroscopy has been used to find stars with highly active chromospheres within 50 pc of the Sun for the Northern hemisphere. We have analyzed thirteen such stars, using high-resolution spectroscopy, to determine Lithium abundances and metallicities. Although two of these stars may be close binaries, it is likely that eleven are single stars or wide binaries, of which four seem to be Pleiades age and two others appear Hyades age. It is usually expected that young stars are to be found in clusters, such as the Pleiades, in which there are many highly active young stars in close …

Effects Of A Heat Acclimation Program On Physiologic And Psychological Responses To Work And Heat While Wearing Fire Ensemble, Dale Anthony Branks Jan 2003

Effects Of A Heat Acclimation Program On Physiologic And Psychological Responses To Work And Heat While Wearing Fire Ensemble, Dale Anthony Branks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Heat acclimation program effects on rectal temperature and heart rate during walks in the heat wearing structural fire protective ensemble (FE) were examined. On six consecutive days, male subjects (N = 7) walked 30 minutes on a treadmill (46--53% V˙O2peak) within a 40 +/- 2°C, 20--22% r.h. environment, wearing FE. Rectal (Trec) mean skin (Tsk), and rectal-skin temperature gradient (T rec-Tsk), heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO2), minute ventilation (VE), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), rating of thermal discomfort (RTD), sweat rate and Na+ and K+ were assessed daily. Significance (p < 0.05) was determined by one way repeated measures ANOVA. Average heart rate, and daily sweat Na+ and K+ concentrations were the only variables observed to decrease significantly during the six days. These changes however were small and represent a questionable practical benefit. Therefore, a six day heat acclimation program during summer months provides no benefit to work in the heat while wearing FE.

Investigation Of Different Light Delivery Schemes In Photodynamic Therapy Of Human Glioma Spheroids, Robin Marie Rodenbush

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The response of human glioma spheroids to ALA-mediated photodynamic therapy subjected to various optical dose delivery schemes is investigated. In particular, the effects of fluence, fluence rate, light dose fractionation and long-term repeat PDT is considered. Improved PDT response was found for low fluence rate photodynamic treatments i.e. those at or below 25 mW cm-2 . Results are consistent with the self-sensitized singlet oxygen mediated photobleaching model of Georgakoudi et al (Georgakoudi, 1998., in which the response is attributed to the deposition of singlet oxygen to a larger volume, i.e., deeper into the spheroid. The efficacy of high-fluence rate PDT …
