A Study Of A Micromegas Detector With A New Readout Scheme, S. Kane, J. May, J. Miyamoto, I. Shipsey

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

A new MICROMEGAS detector readout scheme that protects the readout electronics from damage caused by discharge initiated by large gas amplification has been studied. In the new method, the signal is produced by a readout plane placed below the MICROMEGAS detector anodes. The ratio of the signal amplitude on the readout plane was more than 65% of the signal amplitude on the cathode of the MICROMEGAS. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Density-Functional Theory Of Bosons In A Trap, Y. E. Kim, A. L. Zubarev Jan 2003

Density-Functional Theory Of Bosons In A Trap, Y. E. Kim, A. L. Zubarev

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

A time-dependent Kohn-Sham-(KS-)like theory is presented for N bosons in three- and lower-dimensional traps. We derive coupled equations, which allow us to calculate the energies of elementary excitations. A rigorous proof is given to show that the KS-like equation correctly describes the properties of one-dimensional impenetrable bosons in a general time-dependent harmonic trap in the large-N limit.

The CLEO-III silicon vertex detector is a 4-layer device with double-sided silicon sensors arranged in a barrel design, covering 93% of the solid angle. After initially meeting its design goals of signal-to-noise performance and spatial resolution, the signal efficiency deteriorated on the rphi sensor side in the two innermost layers due to radiation induced sensor effects. Operation of the two outermost layers and the z-coordinate readout in all layers is stable. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Low-coherence photorefractive holography has the potential to acquire wide-field coherence-gated images at frame rates approaching 1000 frames/s, including through scattering media. We present a quantitative analysis of the system optimization and limits of performance for coherence-gated imaging through scattering media using photorefractive holography and compare this performance to direct CCD detection. We show that, for high optical quality recording photorefractive multiple quantum well devices, photorefractive holography has the potential to provide a higher dynamic range than is possible with direct CCD-based detection. Accelerator Search For Cosmic Simps, V. Teplitz, D. Javorsek, E. Fischbach, R. Mohapatra Jan 2003

Accelerator Search For Cosmic Simps, V. Teplitz, D. Javorsek, E. Fischbach, R. Mohapatra

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We give limits on the contribution to the cosmic dark matter density of neutral, stable, strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs). The limits axe inferred from an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) experiment at the Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement Laboratory (PRIME Lab). The experiment accelerated nuclei of both gold and iron. The "SIMP signal" would be discovery of nuclei of these elements with anomalous masses. Since no such signal was observed for SIMP masses up to over 1 TeV, cosmic SIMP density limits may be given. Determining the minimum time of exposure to SIMPs trapped in the galaxy is a crucial element …

Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: A Comprehensive Evidence Based Review, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2003

Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: A Comprehensive Evidence Based Review, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR includes all steps of standard external CPR with the addition of manual mid-abdominal compressions in counterpoint to the rhythm of chest compressions. IAC-CPR can increase blood flow during CPR about two fold compared to standard CPR without IAC, as shown by 6 of 6 studies in computer models and 19 of 20 studies in various animal models. The addition of IAC has clinical benefit in humans, as indicated in 10 of 12 small to medium sized clinical studies. The technique increases the frequency of immediate return of spontaneous circulation for in-hospital resuscitations from roughly 25% to …

A General Framework For Nonlinear Multigrid Inversion, Seungseok Oh, Adam B. Milstein, Charles A. Bouman, Kevin J. Webb Jan 2003

A General Framework For Nonlinear Multigrid Inversion, Seungseok Oh, Adam B. Milstein, Charles A. Bouman, Kevin J. Webb

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A variety of new imaging modalities, such as optical diffusion tomography, require the inversion of a forward problem that is modeled by the solution to a 3-D partial differential equation. For these applications, image reconstruction is particularly difficult because the forward problem is both nonlinear and computationally expensive to evaluate. In this paper, we propose a general framework for nonlinear multigrid inversion that is applicable to a wide variety of inverse problems. The multigrid inversion algorithm results from the application of recursive multigrid techniques to the solution of optimization problems arising from inverse problems. The method works by dynamically adjusting …

Modeling And Estimation Of Total Leakage In Scaled Cmos Logic Circuits, Saibal Mukhopadhyay, Arijit Raychowdhury, Kaushik Roy Jan 2003

Modeling And Estimation Of Total Leakage In Scaled Cmos Logic Circuits, Saibal Mukhopadhyay, Arijit Raychowdhury, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Dramatic increase of subthreshold, gate and reverse biased junction band-to-band-tunneling (BTBT) leakage in scaled devices, result in the drastic increase of total leakage power in a logic circuit. In this paper a methodology for accurate estimation of the total leakage in a logic circuit based on the compact modeling of the different leakage current in scaled devices has been developed. Current models have been developed based on the exact device geometry, 2-D doping profile and operating temperature. A circuit level model of junction BTBT leakage (which is unprecedented) has been developed. Simple models of the subthreshold current and the gate …

Combined Supervised And Unsupervised Learning In Genomic Data Mining, Jack Y. Yang, Okan K. Ersoy Jan 2003

Combined Supervised And Unsupervised Learning In Genomic Data Mining, Jack Y. Yang, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Since the discoveries of Overhauser effects and DNA double helix structure, many protein structures have been determined experimentally, especially by utilizing the Overhauser effects. Biologists are not only able to describe the life phenomena but also to seek the understanding of life mechanisms at molecular level. With the advent of high-throughput genome sequencing technology, more and more genomes are available; consequently our ability to sequence genomes has outstripped our ability to analyze the resulting data in order to determine the functions and structures of proteins encoded in the genomes. Determination of protein structures and functions using traditional laboratory methods is …

Non-Crossing Ordered Bdd For Physical Synthesis Of Regular Circuit Structure, Aiqun Cao, Cheng-Kok Koh Jan 2003

Non-Crossing Ordered Bdd For Physical Synthesis Of Regular Circuit Structure, Aiqun Cao, Cheng-Kok Koh

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper, we propose a novel compact BDD structure, called Non-crossing ordered BDD (NCOBDD), that can be mapped directly to a regular circuit structure. Compared with other BDD-based regular structures, NCOBDDmapped circuits reduce the costs of area, power and latency, while preserving the regularity of the structure. We also present an algorithm that uses a top-down level-by-level sweep and a back-tracing mechanism to construct the minimum sized NCOBDD. Experimental results show that for asymmetric benchmark circuits, the average reduction on area, power and latency are 57.8%, 49.9% and 68.7%, respectively, compared with Yet Another Decision Diagram (YADD) [14].

Spatial Random Trees And The Center-Surround Algorithm, Ilya Pollak, J. M. Siskind, Mary P. Harper, Charles A. Bouman Jan 2003

Spatial Random Trees And The Center-Surround Algorithm, Ilya Pollak, J. M. Siskind, Mary P. Harper, Charles A. Bouman

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A new class of multiscale stochastic processes called spatial random trees (SRTs) is introduced and studied. As with previous multiscale stochastic processes, SRTs model multidimensional signals using random processes on trees. Our key innovation, however, is that the tree structure itself is random and is generated by a probabilistic context-free grammar (PCFG) [26]. While PCFGs have been used to model 1-D signals, the generalization to multiple dimensions is not direct because the leaves of a tree generated by a PCFG cannot be naturally mapped to a multidimensional lattice. We solve this problem by defining a new class of PCFGs which …

A Simple Quantum Mechanical Treatment Of Scattering In Nanoscale Transistors, Rajesh Venugopal, Magnus Paulsson, Sebastien Goasguen, Supriyo Datta, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 2003

A Simple Quantum Mechanical Treatment Of Scattering In Nanoscale Transistors, Rajesh Venugopal, Magnus Paulsson, Sebastien Goasguen, Supriyo Datta, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a computationally efficient, two-dimensional quantum mechanical simulation scheme for modeling dissipative electron transport in thin body, fully depleted, n-channel, silicon-on-insulator transistors. The simulation scheme, which solves the nonequilibrium Green’s function equations self consistently with Poisson’s equation, treats the effect of scattering using a simple approximation inspired by the “Büttiker probes,” often used in mesoscopic physics. It is based on an expansion of the active device Hamiltonian in decoupled mode space. Simulation results are used to highlight quantum effects, discuss the physics of scattering and to relate the quantum mechanical quantities used in our model to experimentally measured …

Quantum Mechanical Analysis Of Channel Access Geometry And Series Resistance In Nanoscale Transistors, R. Venugopal, S. Goasguen, Supriyo Datta, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We apply a two-dimensional quantum mechanical simulation scheme to study the effect of channel access geometries on device performance. This simulation scheme solves the nonequilibrium Green’s function equations self-consistently with Poisson’s equation and treats the effect of scattering using a simple approximation inspired by Büttiker. It is based on an expansion of the device Hamiltonian in coupled mode space. Simulation results are used to highlight quantum effects and discuss the importance of scattering when examining the transport properties of nanoscale transistors with differing channel access geometries. Additionally, an efficient domain decomposition scheme for evaluating the performance of nanoscale transistors is …

A Fixed-Grid Front-Tracking Algorithm For Solidification Problems. Part Ii - Directional Solidification With Melt Convection, C. Y. Li, S V. Garimella, J E. Simpson Jan 2003

A Fixed-Grid Front-Tracking Algorithm For Solidification Problems. Part Ii - Directional Solidification With Melt Convection, C. Y. Li, S V. Garimella, J E. Simpson

CTRC Research Publications

A numerical study of directional solidification has been performed using a fixed-grid front- tracking algorithm. The directional solidification of pure tin, as well as the horizontal Bridgman growth of pure succinonitrile, were investigated. In both cases, the growth front was stable and nondendritic, but was significantly distorted by the influence of convection in the melt and, for the Bridgman growth case, by the translation of temperatures at the boundaries which represents furnace movement. Results obtained for the directional soli- dification of pure tin were found to agree reasonably well with experimental and numerical data for temperatures and front locations obtained …

Design Of Diffractive Optical Elements: Optimality, Scale And Near-Field Diffraction Considerations, Parker Kuhl, Okan K. Ersoy Jan 2003

Design Of Diffractive Optical Elements: Optimality, Scale And Near-Field Diffraction Considerations, Parker Kuhl, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this research, two related research topics were investigated. The first one is the use of scalar diffraction theory for the purpose of simulating and implementing diffractive optical elements (DOEs). The main focus was on the optimal design of computer- generated holograms (CGHs). Two existing methods were combined to improve the reconstructed image of a CGH. The new method combines the Optimal Decimation-in-Frequency Iterative Interlacing Technique (ODIFIIT) with the Lohmann coding scheme. Simulations indicate that the reconstructed image produced with this method has less error than reconstructions with either method alone. Physical reconstructions were performed and compared to the simulated …

Hoard: A Peer-To-Peer Enhancement For The Network File System, Ali Raza Butt, Troy A. Johnson, Yili Zheng, Y. Charlie Hu Jan 2003

Hoard: A Peer-To-Peer Enhancement For The Network File System, Ali Raza Butt, Troy A. Johnson, Yili Zheng, Y. Charlie Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This work presents Hoard, a peer-to-peer enhancement for the widely-used Network File System (NFS). Certain features–such as location transparency, mobility transparency, load balancing, and file replication–are missing from NFS but are commonly found in peer-to-peer storage applications. On the other hand, features that NFS provides–specifically hierarchical file organization, directory listings, and file permissions–are missing from most peer-to-peer storage applications. Hoard strives to provide a low-overhead enhancement for NFS through a NFS server that leverages a peer-to-peer routing substrate for efficient node communication. By blending the strengths of NFS with those of peer-to-peer, Hoard provides a single, reliable, shared file system …

An Algorithm For Register-Synchronized Precomputation In Intelligent Memory Systems, Wessam Hassanein, José Fortes, Rudolf Eigenmann Jan 2003

An Algorithm For Register-Synchronized Precomputation In Intelligent Memory Systems, Wessam Hassanein, José Fortes, Rudolf Eigenmann

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper presents a novel compiler algorithm for selecting program slices that prefetch load values concurrently with program execution. The algorithm is evaluated in the context of an intelligent memory system. The architecture consists of a main processor and a simple memory processor. The intelligent memory system pre-executes program slices and forwards values of critical loads to the main processor ahead of their use. The compiler algorithm selects program slices for memory processor execution, and inserts synchronization instructions that synchronize main and memory processors. Experimental results of the generated code on a cycle-accurate simulator show a speedup of up to …

Data Forwarding Through In-Memory Precomputation Threads, Wessam Hassanein, José Fortes, Rudolf Eigenmann Jan 2003

Data Forwarding Through In-Memory Precomputation Threads, Wessam Hassanein, José Fortes, Rudolf Eigenmann

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In modern architectures, memory access latency is an increasingly performance-limiting factor. To reduce this latency, we propose concepts and implementation of a new technique that uses an in-memory processor to precompute future, critical load addresses and forward the computed values to the main processor. The acronym for this technique is IMPT for In-Memory Precomputation-based forwarding Threads. IMPT combines the advantages of precomputationbased techniques with the low memory access latency of processing-in-memory. To evaluate IMPT, we use a cycle-accurate simulation of an aggressive out-of-order processor with accurate simulation of bus and memory contention. The results show a performance gain of up …

Ams Dating Of Early Shellmounds Of The Southeastern Brazilian Coast, T. A. Lima, K. D. Macario, R. M. Anjos, P. R. S. Gomes, M. M. Coimbra, D. Elmore

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the chronology of prehistoric settlements of the central-south Brazilian coast. A charcoal sample from a coastal shellmound of Rio de Janeiro State was dated by C-14-AMS to 7,860+/-80 years BP as part of an interdisciplinary project between physicists and archaeologists. This is an unexpected result that reinforces two similar previous early dates for the same region, which were questioned by Brazilian archaeologists because they implied in putting back by some two thousand years the antiquity consensually accepted for the settlement of that region.

Composition Of The First Bulk Melt Sample From A Volcanic Region Of Mars: Queen Alexandra Range 94201, D. A. Kring, J. D. Gleason, T. D. Swindle, K. Nishiizumi, M. W. Caffee, D. H. Hill, A. J. T. Jull, W. V. Boynton

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Antarctic meteorite Queen Alexandra Range (QUE) 94201 is a 12 g basaltic achondrite dominated by plagioclase (now maskelynite) and zoned low- and high-Ca pyroxene. Petrologic, geochemical, and isotopic analyses indicate that it is related to previously described basaltic and lherzolitic shergottites, which are a group of igneous meteorites that are believed to be from Mars. Unlike previous shergottites, however, QUE 94201 represents a bulk melt rather than a cumulate fraction, meaning it can be used to infer magmatic source regions and the compositions of other melts on Mars. This melt has much more Fe and P than basaltic melts produced …

Femtosecond Response Of Diffraction Efficiency Of Gaas/Algaas Photorefractive Multiple Quantum Well, H. Tanaka, K. Terawaki, K. Kou, S. Tsuboi, S. Nagahara, T. Kita, O. Wada, K. Nakagawa, D. D. Nolte Jan 2003

Femtosecond Response Of Diffraction Efficiency Of Gaas/Algaas Photorefractive Multiple Quantum Well, H. Tanaka, K. Terawaki, K. Kou, S. Tsuboi, S. Nagahara, T. Kita, O. Wada, K. Nakagawa, D. D. Nolte

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Ultrafast response of the diffraction efficiency of a photorefractive multiple quantum well(PRMQW) has been investigated by pump-probe spectroscopy. We evaluated the temporal evolution of the diffraction efficiency of the PRMQW using a differential transmission spectrum. The results were compared with the output-widening factor of diffracted pulses. A good agreement obtained between our evaluation results and the results. of electric-field cross correlation has confirmed the applicability of our technique in characterizing the diffraction efficiency of the PRMQW.

Ultrasound Detection Through Turbid Media, P. Yu, L. Peng, D. D. Nolte, M. R. Melloch Jan 2003

Ultrasound Detection Through Turbid Media, P. Yu, L. Peng, D. D. Nolte, M. R. Melloch

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Optical coherence-domain reflectometry and laser-based ultrasound detection have been combined with the use of adaptive optics to detect ultrasound through turbid media. The dynamic hologram in a photorefractive quantum-well device performs as a coherence gate that eliminates multiply scattered background. Quadrature homodyne detection conditions are selected by the choice of center wavelength of the pulse spectrum, requiring no active stabilization or feedback. A depth resolution of 30 mum was achieved, with a pulse duration of nominally 120 fs for ultrasound detection through turbid media up to optical thicknesses of 11 mean free scattering lengths. Chandra Observations Of The Guitar Nebula, D. S. Wong, J. M. Cordes, S. Chatterjee, E. G. Zweibel, J. P. Finley, R. W. Romani, M. P. Ulmer

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

As part of a multi-wavelength study, we report on a 50 ks Chandra/ACIS observation of the Guitar Nebula, a bow shock nebula associated with the radio pulsar B2224+65. We see a "hot spot" at the tip of the bow shock. We also notice a "jet" of X-ray emission at position angle (PA) -69degrees. However, the proper motion of the pulsar and the axis of optical emission is at PA 52.degrees1. We discuss the resulting interpretations of the relativistic pulsar wind and the surrounding ISM.

The Effect Of Bibliographic Instruction On The Demand For Reference Services, E. Stewart Saunders Jan 2003

The Effect Of Bibliographic Instruction On The Demand For Reference Services, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

If the effect of bibliographic instruction is to create a more self reliant library user and information seeker, does this mean that bibliographic instruction programs lead to a decline in the demand for reference services? This research analyzes the data for 83 ARL academic libraries over a six year period. A regression equation fitted the data. Each student receiving bibliographic instruction increased the reference demand by two to seven questions.

Harper & Brothers’ Family And School District Libraries, 1830-1846., Robert S. Freeman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

In the 1830s, at the dawn of mass-market publishing, J. & J. Harper of New York began publishing several libraries, including Harper’s Family Library and Harper’s School District Library. A “library” in this sense is a series or set of uniformly bound and uniformly priced books issued by the same publisher. A leading publisher and a major force in the broad religious and social reform movements of the period, the Harper brothers helped to shape education in American homes and schools. As Methodists they were advocates of reading for moral improvement. As innovative publishers, they made full use of the …

Based on a measurement of high momentum eta' production in B decays, we determine the charmless inclusive B-->eta'X-nc branching fraction in the lab-frame momentum interval 2.0 pairs collected at the Y(4S) center-of-mass energy with the CLEO II and II.V detector configurations, we find B(B--eta(')X(nc)) = [4.6+/-1.1+/-0.4+/-0.5]x10(-4) in the 2.0
