Analysis Of Hydrodynamic Effects Of Microasperity Shapes On Thrust Bearing Surfaces, Ravinder Babu Siripuram Jan 2003

Analysis Of Hydrodynamic Effects Of Microasperity Shapes On Thrust Bearing Surfaces, Ravinder Babu Siripuram

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The present thesis is a comparative study of the hydrodynamic effects of a few deterministic microasperity shapes in a thrust slider application. Numerical study based on finite difference methods is used to find the trend of important tribological properties such as friction and leakage. Also, this work utilizes a distinctive and practical approach for comparison by considering constant load conditions, instead of constant film thickness, as is expected in an operating thrust bearing. The results are encouraging and clearly reveal the existence of a transition point for asperity area fraction where a reversal in trends for both the coefficient of …

Pattern Evaluation For In-Plane Displacement Measurement Of Thin Films, Phanikrishna Thota Jan 2003

Pattern Evaluation For In-Plane Displacement Measurement Of Thin Films, Phanikrishna Thota

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The term Gossamer is used to describe ultra-lightweight spacecraft structures that solve the aerospace challenge of obtaining maximum performance while reducing the launch costs of the spacecraft. Gossamer structures are extremely compliant, which complicates control design and ground testing in full scale. One approach is to design and construct smaller test articles and verify their computational models experimentally, so that similar computational models can be used to predict the dynamic performance of full-scale structures. Though measurement of both in-plane and out-of-plane displacements is required to characterize the dynamic response of the surface of these structures, this thesis lays the groundwork …

Elk Calf Survival, Mortality, And Neonatal Habitat Use In Eastern Kentucky, Nathan W. Seward Jan 2003

Elk Calf Survival, Mortality, And Neonatal Habitat Use In Eastern Kentucky, Nathan W. Seward

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

I estimated survival, cause-specific mortality, and neonatal habitat use of elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) calves in eastern Kentucky. I also measured habitat characteristics of elk parturition sites and annual calf production . Radio-collared females were fitted with vaginal implant transmitters and monitored for parturition behavior to locate, capture, and radio-collar calves during the springs of 2001 and 2002. Thirty-seven adult females with implant transmitters were translocated from Logan, Utah, to Addington Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in eastern Kentucky. Additional females from previous releases during 1997 and 1998 were monitored for parturition behavior. Mean calf production for all females monitored (n=77) …

Analysis And Application Of Capacitive Displacement Sensors To Curved Surfaces, Philip T. Smith Jr. Jan 2003

Analysis And Application Of Capacitive Displacement Sensors To Curved Surfaces, Philip T. Smith Jr.

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Capacitive displacement sensors have many applications where non-contact, high precision measurement of a surface is required. Because of their non-contact nature they can easily measure conductive surfaces that are flexible or otherwise unable to be measured using a contact probe. Since the output of the capacitance gage is electrical, data points can be collected quickly and averaged to improve statistics. It is often necessary for capacitive displacement sensors to gage the distance from a curved (non-flat) surface. Although displacements can easily be detected, the calibration of this output can vary considerably from the flat case. Since a capacitance gage is …

Experimental Investigation Of Separation In A Low Pressure Turbine Blade Cascade Model, Brian Hollon Jan 2003

Experimental Investigation Of Separation In A Low Pressure Turbine Blade Cascade Model, Brian Hollon

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The flow field around a low pressure turbine blade is examined using smoke-wire flow visualization, static surface pressure measurements, and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The purpose of the experimental study is to investigate the transition and separation characteristics on low pressure turbine blades under low Reynolds number (Re) and varying freestream turbulence intensity (FSTI). A cascade model consisting of 6 Pratt andamp; Whitney PAK-B low pressure turbine blades was examined in a wind tunnel using PIV and flow visualization. Smoke-wire visualization was performed for test section exit angles of 93°, 95°, and 97°, in the range Re = …

Study Of The "Poor Man's Navier-Stokes" Equation Turbulence Model, Stewart Andrew Bible Jan 2003

Study Of The "Poor Man's Navier-Stokes" Equation Turbulence Model, Stewart Andrew Bible

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The work presented here is part of an ongoing effort to develop a highly accurate and numerically efficient turbulence simulation technique. The paper consists of four main parts, viz., the general discussion of the procedure known as Additive Turbulent Decomposition, the derivation of the "synthetic velocity" subgrid-scale model of the high wavenumber turbulent fluctuations necessary for its implementation, the numerical investigation of this model and a priori tests of said models physical validity. Through these investigations we have demonstrated that this procedure, coupled with the use of the "Poor Mans Navier-Stokes" equation subgrid-scale model, has the potential to be …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of visual stimuli on music listening skills in pre-service elementary teachers. Visual Stimuli in this study refers to the presentation of arts elements in selected visually projected images of paintings. Music listening skills are defined as those skills needed to identify and interpret musical excerpts. A Pretest-Posttest Control-group Design was used in this study. Subjects were pre-service elementary general educators enrolled in a large southern university (N=93). Students from intact classes were randomly placed into either the experimental group or the control group. The treatment consisted of six music listening …

The Interplay Between Norms And Enforcement In Tax Compliance, Leandra Lederman Jan 2003

The Interplay Between Norms And Enforcement In Tax Compliance, Leandra Lederman

Articles by Maurer Faculty

What will increase individuals' compliance with the federal income tax? There are rich legal, economic, and sociological literatures examining this question. The traditional answer that increased enforcement will increase compliance is supported by both economic modeling and a number of experiments. However, studies show that appeals to normative beliefs about honesty in taxpaying play an important role as well.

A number of scholars have suggested that vigorous enforcement of the tax laws may be counterproductive because it may suggest that noncompliance is the norm. This article argues, in part, that enforcement and a compliance norm are not inconsistent but rather …

On The Macroeconomic Effects Of Establishing Tradability In Weak Property Rights, Gunnar Eliasson, Clas Wihlborg Jan 2003

On The Macroeconomic Effects Of Establishing Tradability In Weak Property Rights, Gunnar Eliasson, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

The New Economy is closely associated with computing & communications technology, notably the Internet. We discuss property rights to, and trade in, the difficult-to-define intangible assets increasingly dominating the New Economy, and the possibility of under-investment in these assets. For a realistic analysis we introduce a Schumpeterian market environment (the experimentally organized economy). Weak property rights prevail when the rights to access, use, andtrade in intangible assets cannot be fully exercised. The trade-off between the benefits of open access on the Internet, and the incentive effects of strengthened property rights, depend both on the particular strategy a firm employs to …

A Place To Stand: Wilderness And Civilization, Clancy Flynn Neilsen Jan 2003

A Place To Stand: Wilderness And Civilization, Clancy Flynn Neilsen

Whittier Scholars Program

This senior project is a research paper based on philosophy and social theories and their application to environmental studies. Some references the student uses are well known theorists and thinkers such as John Locke, Michel Foucault, Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and Henry David Thoreau. They write, Understanding the problem of wilderness and its historicity is more important today than ever. Turning the focus of theory onto wilderness can help us understand and correct, not only ecological issues, but social problems as well. Wilderness has always been a place symbolic of great freedom. Its permanent degradation would be a blow to …

The Influence Of Time, Barbara Finnegan Jan 2003

The Influence Of Time, Barbara Finnegan

Whittier Scholars Program

This project examines the lives and stories of five individuals who were all born over seventy years ago. Through these stories information was provided along with the history necessary to connect the past with the present. Through a series of questions and interviews there were several consistent patterns relevant in the lives of these five people. These patterns and themes helped to continue an understanding of how it is presently that we are still very much affected by history.

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Of Hartmann Wavefront Sensor Data For A Plane Mixing Layer, Peter J. Szyjka Jan 2003

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Of Hartmann Wavefront Sensor Data For A Plane Mixing Layer, Peter J. Szyjka

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The ''snapshot" proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was used to analyze the turbulent characteristics of a plane mixing layer. A two-dimensional (2-D) Hartmann wavefront sensor measured optical tilt propagation through a flow field downstream of a splitter plate. The velocity difference across the splitter plate produced roller vortices via the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Refractive-index fluctuations were produced by slightly heating the flow on the low-speed side of the splitter plate. The Hartmann sensor detects gradients in refractive index (and thus temperature) in directions perpendicular to its direction of propagation. The measured field of two-dimensional tilt (or optical deflection) is proportional to the …

"Whisky's Fe Drinkin'; Water's Fer Fightin'!" Resolving A Collective Action Dilemma In New Mexico, John R. Brown

Law of the Rio Chama

The water budget of New Mexico's Middle Rio Grande region incurs annually a deficit of 55,000 acre-feet through groundwater mining. To address this unsustainable condition, a State-mandated regional water planning effort involving significant public participation is underway to produce a regional water plan. The action arena where this process is taking place may not be appropriately constituted to enable stakeholders to agree on and implement a comprehensive plan to "balance all desired and required uses with sustainable supply." The heterogeneity of the actors and their interests and the complexity of the decision situations they face contribute to a high level …
