Women's Envy In The Workplace: Contexts And Consequences, Para Ambardar Jan 2003

Women's Envy In The Workplace: Contexts And Consequences, Para Ambardar

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

There is a paucity of literature on women's subjective experience of being envious or being envied in the contemporary workplace. Yet envy, wanting what another possesses, is believed to thrive in a competitive interpersonal milieu, much like the modern workplace, where employees vie for limited organizational resources and rewards. Accordingly, there is a need to better understand envy's role in the workplace and move from an abstract, context-free conceptualization of workplace envy to one that is more differentiated and context-bound. Eighteen women were interviewed for this qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews. Results were analyzed using both psychoanalytic and social psychological …

Implicit Prosody In Silent Reading: Relative Clause Attachment In Croatian, Nenad Lovric Jan 2003

Implicit Prosody In Silent Reading: Relative Clause Attachment In Croatian, Nenad Lovric

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

When a relative clause (RC) follows two nouns (N1, N2) in a complex noun phrase such as that contained in the example English sentence below, the preferred interpretation has been found to differ across languages.

(1) Someone shot the servant [N1] of the actress [N2] who was on the balcony [RC].

In some languages (e.g., English), readers preferentially interpret the RC as attaching to (i.e., modifying) N2. In other languages (e.g., Spanish), there is a preference for attachment to N1. This cross-linguistic variation is the only known counterevidence to the claim that the human sentence processing routines are universal, and …

Second Natures: Media, Masculinity And The Natural World In Twentieth-Century American Literature And Film., Jeanne E. Hamming Jan 2003

Second Natures: Media, Masculinity And The Natural World In Twentieth-Century American Literature And Film., Jeanne E. Hamming

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This multidisciplinary dissertation examines the cultural anxieties associated with masculine identity in relation to both technology and nature in key literary texts and contemporary films of the twentieth-century: Ray Bradbury's “The Veldt” and The Martian Chronicles, Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, James Dickey's Deliverance , Don DeLillo's White Noise, Fight Club, American Psycho, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, and Dark City. Exploring the theoretical intersections of technoculture, ecocriticism, and gender studies, this dissertation analyzes the relationship between masculine identity and nature, as it is mediated by American technoculture. This relationship is marked by a discernible cultural malaise—a sense …

Experimental Support For The Use Of Story Telling To Guide Behavior: The Effects Of Story Telling On Multiple And Mixed Fixed Ratio (Fr) /Differential Reinforcement Of Low Rate (Drl) Schedule Responding., Michelle Heffner Jan 2003

Experimental Support For The Use Of Story Telling To Guide Behavior: The Effects Of Story Telling On Multiple And Mixed Fixed Ratio (Fr) /Differential Reinforcement Of Low Rate (Drl) Schedule Responding., Michelle Heffner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Story telling is universal, and the significance of stories may lie in their ability to guide behavior. An informal analysis of story telling suggests that stories provide a model of behavior, establish motivation, and stimulate the development of self-generated rules. In psychotherapy, stories illustrate points, suggest solutions, improve client insight, increase motivation, and establish rapport (Barker, 1996; Zeig, 1980). Despite the popular use of stories across theoretical orientations and treatment approaches, it is not clear if stories facilitate behavior change. Observational and correlational data suggest that stories may guide behavior, but there is no experimental support for these findings. The …

Towards A Theology Of Worship: An Application At The Oakwood College Seventh-Day Adventist Church, John S. Nixon Jan 2003

Towards A Theology Of Worship: An Application At The Oakwood College Seventh-Day Adventist Church, John S. Nixon

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. There is an ongoing conflict between the members of the Oakwood College Church regarding what constitutes appropriate and meaningful worship. The conflict is most pronounced between the church’s two largest constituencies, college students and senior citizens. The lack of unity on this issue hinders both nurture and outreach efforts on behalf of the church and is a constant source of member dissatisfaction. Initial observations suggest that the problem is traceable, at least in part, to the lack of a clear understanding as to what should be the basis for determining corporate worship practice.

Method. This study presents a review …

A Comparison Of Community Members' Preferences To Viewing Two Different Approaches To Therapy., Sherry Lynn Cain Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Community Members' Preferences To Viewing Two Different Approaches To Therapy., Sherry Lynn Cain

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The perceptions of community members on a traditional Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) counseling approach and a multi-sensory REBT counseling approach were examined in this study. A total of 98 individuals, who were the staff and parents recruited from a community Headstart program, participated in the study. Simulated counseling sessions of the two approaches were presented to the community members through eleven minute videotapes. After watching the counseling sessions, individuals rated the sessions with the Counseling Style Preference Form and the Credibility/Expectancy Questionnaire. They also were asked to write comments about each of the counseling sessions. Paired sample T-tests yielded …

Plant-Derived Monoterpenes Suppress Hamster Kidney Cell 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase Synthesis At The Post-Transcriptional Level, Dennis Peffley, Apurba K. Gayen Jan 2003

Plant-Derived Monoterpenes Suppress Hamster Kidney Cell 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase Synthesis At The Post-Transcriptional Level, Dennis Peffley, Apurba K. Gayen

Faculty and Staff Publications

The rate-limiting enzyme for mevalonate and cholesterol synthesis in mammalian cells is 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase. Control occurs through both transcriptional and post-transcriptional actions signaled by the end product, cholesterol, and by isoprenoid intermediates. End products of plant mevalonate metabolism, i.e., plant-derived isoprenoids, also suppress mammalian HMG-CoA reductase. Previous studies reported that isoprenoids suppress reductase synthesis at a post-transcriptional level. We tested the hypothesis that plant-derived isoprenoids also regulate mammalian HMG-CoA reductase synthesis at a post-transcriptional level by incubating lovastatin-treated C100 cells with mevalonate or a plant-derived isoprenoid (the monoterpenes, limonene, perillyl alcohol or geraniol) either alone or combined with the …

Adolescent Friendship, Relationship Quality, And Delinquency: Associations With Social And Cognitive Problem-Solving Performance., Lisa Swenson Jan 2003

Adolescent Friendship, Relationship Quality, And Delinquency: Associations With Social And Cognitive Problem-Solving Performance., Lisa Swenson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Problem-solving performance of 132 adolescents was examined to determine whether performance was affected by individual (i.e., delinquency, gender) or contextual variables (i.e., friendship, situation-specific relationship quality). A friendship nomination procedure was used to pair individuals with a same-sex friend or nonfriend. Partners discussed and generated solutions for two cognitive isolation-of-variables tasks (adapted from Azmitia & Montgomery, 1993) and four social problem vignettes (two delinquency-related and two relationship quality-related problems; adapted from Berg, 1989; Owens, 2001). Following discussion of the problems, partners were separated and completed answer sheets for each problem. Participants then completed a delinquency measure (adapted from Mak, 1993), …

Un Seminario Sobre Mayordomía Para La Unión Mexicana Del Norte De Los Adventistas Del Séptimo Día, Jorge Rodolfo Dzul

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The doctrine of Christian stewardship is important for the believer and the the church. This biblical teaching covers all of the Christian experience, yet its main challenge is in its relation with money. The purpose of this dissertation was to provide a better understanding of this doctrine among Seventh-day Adventists and to encourage them to be “good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

The methodology of this dissertation was to examine existing Protestant literature, as well as Seventh-day Adventist writings, on the topic. The theoretical section of the study covers the nature of stewardship, its biblical …

Development Of Targeted Strategies For Church Growth Within The Greater New York Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Angel Jesus Rodriguez Jan 2003

Development Of Targeted Strategies For Church Growth Within The Greater New York Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Angel Jesus Rodriguez

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

For the past twelve years the Greater New York Conference has been struggling to produce growth within the Caucasian sector and other indigenous people groups. The primary source of membership growth has been from immigrants. An analysis of the demographics retained of the Conference's geographical location, however, reveals that the majority of the people are second- and third-generation Caucasian, Black, Hispanic, and Asian Americans. These are the people who the Greater New York Conference has not been successfully evangelizing.

Method

In order to understand how churches grow, I surveyed pertinent literature on church growth. I implemented these strategies into …

Uric Acid As An Antioxidant And The Effect Of Changes In Plasma Uric Acid Concentrations On Broiler Susceptibility To Ascites, And, The Effect Of Diet And Strain On Growth, Feed Efficiency, And Amino Acid Retention In Hybrid Bluegill., Beth M. Stinefelt Jan 2003

Stinefelt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Study one investigated the ability of uric acid (UA) to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the ability of UA to protect against ROS-mediated damage. Hydroxyl and superoxide radical ESR signals were reduced by addition of UA (P< 0.05). UA prevented lipid peroxidation in RAW 264.7 cells exposed to silica (P< 0.015). UA inhibited hydroxyl-mediated damage to λ Hind III DNA. The objective of study two was to determine the effect of changes in plasma UA (PUA) on growth and ascites development in broilers. Chicks were fed a grower diet supplemented with 0.5 moles inosine/kg feed to raise PUA, 15 mg allopurinol/kg body weight/day to lower PUA, or a control diet. Birds were housed in two environmental chambers; one had conditions to promote ascites while the second was held at standard conditions. Although dietary treatment had an effect on PUA, no effect of diet on performance or development of ascites was observed.

Fragm: A Blasting Fragmentation Model Of Rocks., Sergey Victorovych Zagreba Jan 2003

Fragm: A Blasting Fragmentation Model Of Rocks., Sergey Victorovych Zagreba

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fragmentation is a major concern of any blasting operation. Information on the degree and size distribution of fragments within a blasted rock mass is essential for efficient rock loading and crushing operations. Detailed literature review shows that majority of the previous researchers estimated blast fragmentation by considering four basic variables, i.e. rock properties, explosive properties, drilling pattern and bench geometry. However, when considering the effect of burden on rock fragmentation, simplified assumptions were made and its variability along the bench height was often ignored. In reality, because of the non-uniform burden along the bench height, the actual powder factor in …

Understanding Statutory Bundles: Does The Sherman Act Come With The 1996 Telecommunications Act?, Randal C. Picker Jan 2003

Understanding Statutory Bundles: Does The Sherman Act Come With The 1996 Telecommunications Act?, Randal C. Picker

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Three recent appellate decisions—Goldwasser, Trinko and Covad—have addressed the interplay of the 1996 Telecommunications Act and the antitrust laws. This area raises questions of both substantive law and standing. This essay focuses on standing and in particular the question of how the antitrust doctrine in Illinois Brick should apply to situations in which there is an alleged breach of an access duty owed by an incumbent local exchange carrier. That access duty might arise under the 1996 Act itself or under applicable antitrust doctrines, such as the essential facilities doctrine or the duty to deal with competitors seen in Aspen …
