Altered Reward Value Of Carbohydrate Snacks For Female Smokers Withdrawn From Nicotine, Bonnie Spring, Sherry Pagoto, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Donald Hedeker, Jessica Werth Jan 2003

Altered Reward Value Of Carbohydrate Snacks For Female Smokers Withdrawn From Nicotine, Bonnie Spring, Sherry Pagoto, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Donald Hedeker, Jessica Werth

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Discontinuing nicotine intake usually results in weight gain partially due to heightened energy intake from between-meal snacks. This experiment tested the hypothesis that the reinforcing value of palatable carbohydrate-rich snacks increases for female smokers during nicotine deprivation. Eighteen smokers and 18 nonsmokers completed a concurrent-schedules operant computer task on two separate days. Smokers were bio-verified abstinent at the second testing. The operant task allowed participants to earn points redeemable for either carbohydrate snacks or money on concurrent variable-ratio schedules of reinforcement. There were five different probabilities of earning points redeemable for snacks (8%, 16%, 25%, 50%, 75%), while the probability …

Fecal Coliforms And Antibiotic Resistance Of Tuckahoe Creek, Catherine C. Parker Jan 2003

Fecal Coliforms And Antibiotic Resistance Of Tuckahoe Creek, Catherine C. Parker

Honors Theses

The Tuckahoe Creek has been classified impaired by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) indicating that one of the following parameters exceed the accepted limits: pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), phosphates, nitrates, and concentration of fecal coliforms. Throughout the course of this study, two selected sites have been monitored monthly in order to measure these parameters. Route 288 is located near a construction site, and Route 621 is near Sycamore Creek Golf Course in a more rural area. The results from this study have shown that the fecal coliforms have been uniformly within the set legal limit of 1,000 …

Trusting Organizations : Organizational Structure, Trust, And The Implications For Leaders, Jeremiah Robert Winters Jan 2003

Trusting Organizations : Organizational Structure, Trust, And The Implications For Leaders, Jeremiah Robert Winters

Honors Theses

The religious context blurs vision and judgment when looking at issues related to matters that can be construed as theological matters. Religious issues are anchored deep inside individuals and the slightest challenge or questioning of an individuals beliefs brings about defensiveness. Long standing traditions are extremely difficult to change much less do way with. The structure of the two organizations clearly has an impact on the type and style of leadership practiced.

The Presbyterian Church structure, the denominational structure that places the power in the hands of the people was a direct response to the abuses found in the Catholic …

Leading A 'Torn Country' : Turkey's Ideological And Civilized Divide, Joshua Walker Jan 2003

Leading A 'Torn Country' : Turkey's Ideological And Civilized Divide, Joshua Walker

Honors Theses

Turkey, since 1923, has proven to be a valuable case study in ideological and religious tensions and national identity crisis; however, with a newly elected government, Turkey appears ready to write a new chapter in its history. The complexity of the issues that exist within a modern state along with the diversity of traditional cultures and rich history of Turkey do not allow for a singular civilizational inclusion as Huntington advocates, nor a single ideological path to follow. The Kemalist heritage of this young country has presupposed the necessity for adopting modernity as defined by the West. but the tension …

Successfully Training And Retaining New Teachers, Jo Ann Daly, Carolyn Kazemi

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

The widespread need to fill the many teacher vacancies in Virginia and the nation as a whole has stirred many debates on how to solve the problem. Often a "quick fix" attitude prevails when considering options for training and retaining teacher candidates to fill the current and future needs of our schools. The professional development model of collaboration between Marymount University and two local school jurisdictions is an ongoing effort that has met with success and has produced long-term positive results.

Overlooked Issues In The "Diligent Prosecution" Citizen Suit Preclusion, Jeffrey G. Miller Jan 2003

Overlooked Issues In The "Diligent Prosecution" Citizen Suit Preclusion, Jeffrey G. Miller

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Congress sought to attain full compliance with environmental statutes. It reasoned that multiple enforcers would provide more comprehensive and effective enforcement than one enforcer. Congress therefore empowered the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the states and private citizens as enforcers of the statutes. However, Congress worried that successive actions by multiple enforcers could bring disruption and conflict to enforcement litigation and remedies. It therefore included in the citizen suit provision of each statute a limited, three-element notice, delay, and bar preclusion device to manage successive citizens' enforcement against the violations already subject to government enforcement. The device generally bars citizens from …

Add Resources And Apply Them Systemically: Governments' Responsibilities Under The Revised Aba Capital Defense Representation Guidelines, Eric M. Freedman

Hofstra Law Review

The death penalty is expensive. For many reasons-including the reality that if the prosecution insists on the death penalty there is essentially no chance of a guilty plea, and the fact that the bifurcation between guilt and penalty that uniquely characterizes capital cases imposes double costs throughout the process of investigation, trial, and appeals -a state's decision to have a criminal justice system in which death is available as a sanction necessarily entails substantially higher costs than the contrary decision does.

Enforcement Of Wto Rulings: An Interest Group Analysis, Mark L. Movsesian Jan 2003

Enforcement Of Wto Rulings: An Interest Group Analysis, Mark L. Movsesian

Hofstra Law Review

This essay explains the WTO's enforcement mechanism in terms of interest group theory. Under the Dispute Settlement Understanding, a WTO member that fails to comply with a ruling in a trade dispute is subject to "retaliation" from the complaining member: the complaining member may raise tariffs against the offending member's products. This remedy creates incentives for exporters in the offending country to lobby their government in favor of compliance. As a result, the retaliation remedy promotes compliance without intruding directly on national institutions. It is thus superior to suggested reforms, like direct effect, that would commandeer courts or other national …
