Cal Poly's Eswcc Teaches The Next Generation Of Soil Scientists, M. Perry, C. Appel
Earth and Soil Sciences
Since 1992, members of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Earth, Soil, and Water Conservation Club (ESWCC), sponsored by the MESA Agricultural Initiative, have volunteered their time and expertise to educate middle-school students in soil science. ESWCC members assemble soil testing kits containing three soils, pH testing materials, and instructions for analyzing soil pore space, water infiltration rates, and soil texture by “feel”. The kits help over 200 California teachers convey the importance of soil science through simple physical and chemical procedures that provide a deeper understanding of soil. ESWCC members train teachers to run classroom experiments and to relate soil …

Dielectrophoresis And Electrohydrodynamics-Mediated Fluidic Assembly Of Silicon Resistors, S W. Lee, Rashid Bashir
Dielectrophoresis And Electrohydrodynamics-Mediated Fluidic Assembly Of Silicon Resistors, S W. Lee, Rashid Bashir
Birck and NCN Publications
In this letter, we present techniques, utilizing dielectrophoresis and electrohydrodynamics, which can be used for assembling single-crystal silicon devices suspended in a solution onto a binding site on a heterogeneous substrate. Silicon resistors with gold/chromium layers located at the end of the resistors and silicon blocks without metal were fabricated on bonded and etched-backed silicon-on-insulator wafers and successfully released into deionized water. The devices were subsequently assembled on a different substrate at specific binding sites by dielectrophoretic and electrohydrodynamic forces with submicron precision. Current–voltage measurements of the assembled resistors exhibited low contact resistance after the solution was completely evaporated and …
Predictors Of General Medical Use Among Individuals Seeking Therapy For Marital And Family Problems, Jacob D. Christenson
Predictors Of General Medical Use Among Individuals Seeking Therapy For Marital And Family Problems, Jacob D. Christenson
Theses and Dissertations
A number of studies have examined variables associated with medical use. However, most of the studies deal with samples that are not easily generalizable to other populations. In particular, no study is known to have looked at general medical use among people seeking services for marital and family problems. In this study, medical use of participants from the marriage and family therapy services at Brigham Young University Comprehensive Clinic was investigated to determine the best predictors of general medical use. Best subsets multiple linear regression showed that the best overall predictors of general medical use were anxiety and hostility.

Application Of Pqs For Image Quality Analysis In Visible Spectral Imaging, Qun Sun, Mark Fairchild
Presentations and other scholarship
An image quality investigation in visible spectral imaging was performed. Spectral images were simulated using different number of imaging channels, wavelength steps, and noise levels based on practical spectral imaging systems. A mean opinion score (MOS) was determined from a subjective visual assessment scale experiment for image quality of spectral images rendered to a three-channel display. A set of partial image distortion measures, including color difference for color images, were defined based on classified and quantified actual distortions produced by spectral imaging systems. Principal components analysis was then carried out to quantify the correlation between distortion factors. Finally, a multiple …
Rendering Hdr Images, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild
Rendering Hdr Images, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild
Presentations and other scholarship
Color imaging systems are continuously improving, and have now improved to the point of capturing high dynamic range scenes. Unfortunately most commercially available color display devices, such as CRTs and LCDs, are limited in their dynamic range. It is necessary to tone-map, or render, the high dynamic range images in order to display them onto a lower dynamic range device. This paper describes the use of an image appearance model, iCAM, to render high dynamic range images for display. Image appearance models have greater flexibility over dedicated tone-scaling algorithms as they are designed to predict how images perceptually appear, and …
