Otherness And Blackness, Chioke A. M I'Anson Nov 2003

Otherness And Blackness, Chioke A. M I'Anson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to provide a phenomenological examination of Otherness as it relates to the experience of being black in the America. The project begins with a summary of the Otherness theories of Emmanuel Levinas, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Simone de Beauvoir. I then compare these accounts to "Black Consciousness" with a criticism of Sartre from Frantz Fanon. I use this criticism to construct new concepts that will help to better understand the experience of blackness.

Towards A Single-Mode Dispensed Polymer Optical Waveguide, Jill Michelle Kalajian Nov 2003

Towards A Single-Mode Dispensed Polymer Optical Waveguide, Jill Michelle Kalajian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dispensed organic polymer optical waveguides suitable for single-mode operation were recently fabricated. Different dispensing pressures, polymers, and dispensing tips were used in the drawing method.

The waveguides were measured to be approximately 16[mu] wide and 0.8[mu] tall. This is significantly smaller than previously reported dimensions of 300[mu] x 3.5[mu] waveguides fabricated with a similar dispensed polymer method. The waveguides were also found to be suitable for single-mode operation through a series of approximate calculations . This is also something previously not achieved with the larger waveguides.

This novel approach to waveguide fabrication could reduce the expense and time of creating …

Optimizing Long-Term Retention Of Abstract Learning, Danielle Mazur Nov 2003

Optimizing Long-Term Retention Of Abstract Learning, Danielle Mazur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In a distributed learning strategy, study time is spread across multiple study sessions, without increasing total study time. The benefits of distributed practice, also known as spaced practice, on learning of rote-memory tasks (e.g., spelling, addition, and cued-recall of word pairs) are well known. However, few researchers have looked at the effects of distributed practice on the learning of abstract materials (e.g., physics problems, logical deductions, and algebra). We examined the effects of distributed practice on learning the abstract task of matrix multiplication. In Experiment 1, we taught participants matrix multiplication in either a massed (i.e., 0-day interstudy gap), or …

Domain Wall Solutions With Abelian Gauge Fields, J. S. Rozowsky, R. R. Volkas, K. C. Wali Nov 2003

Domain Wall Solutions With Abelian Gauge Fields, J. S. Rozowsky, R. R. Volkas, K. C. Wali

Physics - All Scholarship

We study kink (domain wall) solutions in a model consisting of two complex scalar fields coupled to two independent Abelian gauge fields in a Lagrangian that has $U(1)\times U(1)$ gauge plus $\mathbb{Z}_2$ discrete symmetry. We find consistent solutions such that while the U(1) symmetries of the fields are preserved while in their respective vacua, they are broken on the domain wall. The gauge field solutions show that the domain wall is sandwiched between domains with constant magnetic fields.

Time-Series Studies Of Particulate Matter, Michelle L. Bell, Jonathan M. Samet, Francesca Dominici

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Studies of air pollution and human health have evolved from descriptive studies of the early phenomena of large increases in adverse health effects following extreme air pollution episodes, to time-series analyses and the development of sophisticated regression models. In fact, advanced statistical methods are necessary to address the many challenges inherent in the detection of a small pollution risk in the presence of many confounders. This paper reviews the history, methods, and findings of the time-series studies estimating health risks associated with short-term exposure to particulate matter, though much of the discussion is applicable to epidemiological studies of air pollution …

Smooth Quantile Ratio Estimation With Regression: Estimating Medical Expenditures For Smoking Attributable Diseases, Francesca Dominici, Scott L. Zeger Nov 2003

Smooth Quantile Ratio Estimation With Regression: Estimating Medical Expenditures For Smoking Attributable Diseases, Francesca Dominici, Scott L. Zeger

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this paper we introduce a semi-parametric regression model for estimating the difference in the expected value of two positive and highly skewed random variables as a function of covariates. Our method extends Smooth Quantile Ratio Estimation (SQUARE), a novel estimator of the mean difference of two positive random variables, to a regression model.

The methodological development of this paper is motivated by a common problem in econometrics where we are interested in estimating the difference in the average expenditures between two populations, say with and without a disease, taking covariates into account. Let Y1 and Y2 be two positive …

Fluoropolymers And Methods Of Applying Fluoropolymers In Molding Processes, Dennis W. Smith, Hiren V. Shah, John Ballato, Stephen Foulger Nov 2003

Fluoropolymers And Methods Of Applying Fluoropolymers In Molding Processes, Dennis W. Smith, Hiren V. Shah, John Ballato, Stephen Foulger

Clemson Patents

Fluoropolymers consisting of alternating perfluorocyclobutane and aryl ether linkages possess suitable properties for optical waveguides and other devices using refractive properties of the polymers. Perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) polymers having aryl groups alternating on an ether chain have shown useful physical properties for optical waveguide applications. Processes for micromolding such polymeric films by replicating a pattern or image directly from a silicon master, rather than from a polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) mold, are disclosed.

Gadbury, Stanley Heshka, Linda G. Schwartz, Radha Murugesan, Jennifer L. Kraker, Moonseong Heo, Steven B. Heymsfield, David B. Allison

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: to evaluate the intermediate-term health outcomes associated with a soy-Based meal replacement, and to compare the weight loss efficacy of two distinct patterns of caloric restriction. Methods: Ninety overweight/obese (28 < BMI ≤ 41 kg/m2) adults received a single session of dietary counseling and were randomized to either 12 weeks at 1200 kcal/day, 16 weeks at 1500 kcal/d and 12 weeks at 1800 kcal/d (i.e., the 12/15/18 diet group), or 28 weeks at 1500 kcal/d and 12 weeks at 1800 kcal/d (i.e., the 15/18 diet group). Weight, body fat, waist circumference, blood pressure and serum lipid concentrations were measured at 4-week intervals throughout the 40-week trial. Results: Subjects in both treatments showed statistically significant improvements in outcomes. a regression model for weight change suggests that subjects with larger baseline weights tended to lose more weight and subjects in the 12/15/18 group tended to experience, on average, an additional 0.9 kg of weight loss compared with subjects in the 15/18 group. Conclusion: Both treatments using the soy-Based meal replacement program were associated with significant and comparable weight loss and improvements on selected health variables.
