Energy Estimators For Random Series Path-Integral Methods, Cristian Predescu, Dubravko Sabo, J. D. Doll, David L. Freeman Nov 2003

Energy Estimators For Random Series Path-Integral Methods, Cristian Predescu, Dubravko Sabo, J. D. Doll, David L. Freeman

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We perform a thorough analysis on the choice of estimators for random series path integral methods. In particular, we show that both the thermodynamic (T-method)and the direct (H-method)energy estimators have finite variances and are straightforward to implement. It is demonstrated that the agreement between the T-method and the H-method estimators provides an important consistency check on the quality of the path integral simulations. We illustrate the behavior of the various estimators by computing the total, kinetic, and potential energies of a molecular hydrogen cluster using three different path integral techniques. Statistical tests are employed to validate the sampling strategy adopted …

It's Personal But Is It Mine? Toward Property Rights In Personal Information, Vera Bergelson Nov 2003

It's Personal But Is It Mine? Toward Property Rights In Personal Information, Vera Bergelson

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

"It's Personal But Is It Mine? Toward Property Rights in Personal Information" discusses the disturbing erosion of privacy suffered by the American society in recent years due to citizens' loss of control over their personal information. This information, collected and traded by commercial enterprises, receives almost no protection under current law. I argue that, in order to protect privacy, individuals need to secure control over their information by becoming its legal owners. In this article, I confront two fundamental questions that have not been specifically addressed in the privacy literature before: why property is the most appropriate regime for regulating …

Thoughts On Fragility And Impermanence, Elizabeth Howe Nov 2003

Thoughts On Fragility And Impermanence, Elizabeth Howe

Theses

This thesis project consists of two sections. The first of these sections is the creation of four physically separate, conceptually linked sculptures installed in the Dyer Arts Center Gallery in the Lyndon B. Johnson building on the Rochester Institute of Technology campus. The latter part of the project exists in the form of this written thesis, which will explore various concepts, processes and concerns associated with the individual sculptures and the prevailing ideas inherent to them all. Within both the sculptural work and the written work I am exploring the fragility and vulnerability of being human. The reality of impermanence …

Understanding Why Adult Participants At The World Senior Games Choose A Healthy Diet, Ray M. Merrill, Eric C. Shields Nov 2003

Understanding Why Adult Participants At The World Senior Games Choose A Healthy Diet, Ray M. Merrill, Eric C. Shields

Faculty Publications

Identifying those seniors most likely to adopt a healthy diet, the relative importance they place on certain perceived benefits associated with a healthy diet, and whether these perceived benefits are associated with selected demographic, lifestyle, and health history variables is important for directing effective dietary health promotion programs. Methods: Analyses are based on a cross-sectional convenience sample of 670 seniors aged 50 years and older at the 2002 World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. Data are assessed using frequencies, bivariate analysis, analysis of variance, and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results Fruit and vegetable consumption was significantly higher in individuals …

Underestimation Of Standard Errors In Multi-Site Time Series Studies, Michael Daniels, Francesca Dominici, Scott L. Zeger Nov 2003

Underestimation Of Standard Errors In Multi-Site Time Series Studies, Michael Daniels, Francesca Dominici, Scott L. Zeger

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Multi-site time series studies of air pollution and mortality and morbidity have figured prominently in the literature as comprehensive approaches for estimating acute effects of air pollution on health. Hierarchical models are generally used to combine site-specific information and estimate pooled air pollution effects taking into account both within-site statistical uncertainty, and across-site heterogeneity.

Within a site, characteristics of time series data of air pollution and health (small pollution effects, missing data, highly correlated predictors, non linear confounding etc.) make modelling all sources of uncertainty challenging. One potential consequence is underestimation of the statistical variance of the site-specific effects to …
