Pharmaceutical Formulation For Poorly Water Soluble Camptothecin Analogues, Tiang-Xiang Xiang, Bradley D. Anderson Nov 2003

Pharmaceutical Formulation For Poorly Water Soluble Camptothecin Analogues, Tiang-Xiang Xiang, Bradley D. Anderson

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

The present invention provides a general method to retard the precipitation inception time for poorly water-soluble camptothecin analogues from a supersaturated solution by a chemical conversion approach via pH alteration. This method is successfully utilized to prepare stable parenteral formulations for silatecan 7-t-butyldimethylsilyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (DB-67), a poorly water-soluble lipophilic camptothecin analogue, in aqueous solutions containing β-cyclodextrin sulfobutyl ether (SBE-CD) or other solubilizing agents. The formulations manufactured by this method are more simple and cost-effective, of higher doses and better quality in terms of manufacture loss and formulation stability, and can be free of organic solvents (e.g., DMSO or N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone).

Rates Of Species Loss From Amazonian Forest Fragments, Gonçalo Ferraz, Gareth J. Russell, Philip C. Stouffer, Richard O. Bierregaard, Stuart L. Pimm, Thomas E. Lovejoy

Faculty Publications

In the face of worldwide habitat fragmentation, managers need to devise a time frame for action. We ask how fast do understory bird species disappear from experimentally isolated plots in the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, central Amazon, Brazil. Our data consist of mist-net records obtained over a period of 13 years in 11 sites of 1, 10, and 100 hectares. The numbers of captures per species per unit time, analyzed under different simplifying assumptions, reveal a set of species-loss curves. From those declining numbers, we derive a scaling rule for the time it takes to lose half the …

Women’S Early Warning Symptoms Of Acute Myocardial Infarction, Ann Eckhardt, Jean Mcsweeney, Marisue Cody, Patricia O'Sullivan, Karen Elberson, Debra Moser, Bonnie Garvin Nov 2003

Women’S Early Warning Symptoms Of Acute Myocardial Infarction, Ann Eckhardt, Jean Mcsweeney, Marisue Cody, Patricia O'Sullivan, Karen Elberson, Debra Moser, Bonnie Garvin

Scholarship

Background— Data remain sparse on women’s prodromal symptoms before acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study describes prodromal and AMI symptoms in women. Methods and Results— Participants were 515 women diagnosed with AMI from 5 sites. Using the McSweeney Acute and Prodromal Myocardial Infarction Symptom Survey, we surveyed them 4 to 6 months after discharge, asking about symptoms, comorbidities, and demographic characteristics. Women were predominantly white (93%), high school educated (54.8%), and older (mean age, 66±12), with 95% (n=489) reporting prodromal symptoms. The most frequent prodromal symptoms experienced more than 1 month before AMI were unusual fatigue (70.7%), sleep disturbance (47.8%), and …

Hardware-Based Dynamic Storage Management For High-Performance And Real-Time Systems, Victor H. Lai Nov 2003

Hardware-Based Dynamic Storage Management For High-Performance And Real-Time Systems, Victor H. Lai

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Most modern application programs depend on dynamic storage management to handle allocation and deallocation of memory. Unfortunately conventional software-based storage managers are relatively low performance due to the latency associated with accessing DRAM memory. Consequently, developers of programs with very specialized memory requirements, such a real-time systems, often choose to manage memory manually at the application-code level. This practice can greatly increase performance but it can also significantly complicate the development process. In this thesis we present the design, VHDL implementation and performance evaluation of hardware-based storage manager called the Optimized Hardware Estranged Buddy System (OHEBS). The OHEBS implements four …

Disulfide Bond Formation Involves A Quinhydrone-Type Charge–Transfer Complex, James Regeimbal, Stefan Gleiter, Bernard L. Trumpower, Chang-Ang Yu Nov 2003

Disulfide Bond Formation Involves A Quinhydrone-Type Charge–Transfer Complex, James Regeimbal, Stefan Gleiter, Bernard L. Trumpower, Chang-Ang Yu

Dartmouth Scholarship

The chemistry of disulfide exchange in biological systems is well studied. However, the detailed mechanism of how oxidizing equivalents are derived to form disulfide bonds in proteins is not clear. In prokaryotic organisms, it is known that DsbB delivers oxidizing equivalents through DsbA to secreted proteins. DsbB becomes reoxidized by reducing quinones that are part of the membrane-bound electron-transfer chains. It is this quinone reductase activity that links disulfide bond formation to the electron transport system. We show here that purified DsbB contains the spectral signal of a quinhydrone, a charge-transfer complex consisting of a hydroquinone and a quinone in …

Dispersed Crystallite Up-Conversion Displays, Michael Bass, Hans Jennsen, Alexandra Rapaport Nov 2003

Dispersed Crystallite Up-Conversion Displays, Michael Bass, Hans Jennsen, Alexandra Rapaport

UCF Patents

A two and three dimensional display based on up conversion of near infrared light to the visible. The display medium is a transparent polymer containing particles of crystals doped with Yb.sup.3+ and other rare earth ions. The Yb.sup.3+ ions absorb light from a commercially available diode laser emitting near 975 nm and transfer that energy to the other dopant ions. Using a fluoride crystal host, NaYF.sub.4, co-doped with Tm.sup.3+ ions we obtain blue light at .about.480 nm, with Ho.sup.3+ or Er.sup.3+ ions we obtain green light at .about.550 nm and with Er.sup.3+ we obtain red light at .about.660 nm. The …

Portable Hydrogen Generator-Fuel Cell Apparatus, Nazim Muradov Nov 2003

Portable Hydrogen Generator-Fuel Cell Apparatus, Nazim Muradov

UCF Patents

A compact hydrogen generator is coupled to or integrated with a fuel cell for portable power applications. Hydrogen is produced via thermocatalytic decomposition (cracking, pyrolysis) of hydrocarbon fuels in oxidant-free environment. The apparatus can utilize a variety of hydrocarbon fuels, including natural gas, propane, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, crude oil (including sulfurous fuels). The hydrogen-rich gas produced is free of carbon oxides or other reactive impurities, so it could be directly fed to any type of a fuel cell. The catalysts for hydrogen production in the apparatus are carbon-based or metal-based materials and doped, if necessary, with a sulfur-capturing agent. …
