Validation And Use Of The Catholic School Graduate Characteristics Inventory, Jeffrey P. Dorman

Journal of Catholic Education

Scales and subscales to assess the desirable characteristics of Catholic school graduates were developed and validated using a sample of 557 alumni of Australian Catholic high schools. Exploratory factory analysis supported a 4 scale structure (viz., Religious Faith & Spiritual Development, Personal Integration, Social Responsibility, and Life-long Learning Skills). The utility of this instrument, the Catholic School Graduate Characteristics Inventory (CSGCI), is enhanced by the optional subdividing of each scale into 3 internally consistent subscales. The use of the CSGCI revealed statistically significant differences in the characteristics of Catholic school graduates according to gender and year of graduation. These results …

Among the most fundamental issues in constitutional law is the scope of application of individual rights provisions and, in particular, their reach into the private sphere. This issue is also currently one of the most important and hotly debated in comparative constitutional law, where it is known under the rubric of "vertical" and "horizontal effect." It is true that now most biology courses begin with the DNA molecule, and many chemistry courses introduce the notion of electronic orbitals in atoms and molecules, topics for which students are not well prepared, since most of them have not taken physics courses. Physics courses in turn relegate to the end some discussion of the structure of matter and electromagnetic interaction, or do not discuss that at all. Thus, students miss the overall picture.

Social animals are provisioned with prosocial orientations that operate to transcend self-interest. Morality, as used here, describes human versions of such orientations. We explore the evolutionary antecedents of morality in the context of emergentism, giving considerable attention to the biological traits that undergird awareness and our emergent human forms of mind. We suggest that our moral frames of mind emerge from our primate prosocial capacities, transfigured and valenced by our symbolic languages, cultures, and religions.

The Textbook Controversies In Japan: What History Is Taught?, Aaron Cooley

Essays in Education

The controversies surrounding the content and perspective of several Japanese textbooks are examined and the impact on geo-political relations analyzed. The ways in which these battles affect perceptions of history are discussed in a regional and global context. Extrapolating from this example, a position of inclusiveness is advanced for the content of textbooks that address controversial historical issues in Japan and elsewhere.

The development of this paper describes uniquely the mechanics of choice in the delivery of education services relative to the public school system and school options. Three components, which magnify choice, are consumer (parents), market (pupils), and producer (government). Macbeth (1989) notes that there are four groups of people who benefit from the education system, namely: (1) the pupil (children) (2) the parent (3) the owners of a school (government) and (4) society at large. OBJECTIVE: Hemophilus influenzae is an important pathogen that is responsible for invasive and non-invasive infections in both children and adults. This study aims to assess the relationship of biotypes to the sites of infection, serotypes, antimicrobial susceptibility, b-lactamase production and age. METHODS: A total of 200 isolates of H.influenzae were obtained from clinical specimens over a period of 12 months from January 2001 through to January 2002 from King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dental Health Status And Caries Pattern Of Preschool Children In Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia, Tahir R. Paul

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess dental caries and its relation to plaque, tooth brushing habit and past dental attendance, and to determine the caries pattern in primary dentition of preschool children. METHODS: One hundred and three, 5-year-old children, from preschool nurseries in Al-Kharj, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were studied in 1994. The World Health Organization criteria was used to determine caries. RESULTS: Only 16.5% were caries free. The mean decayed missing filled teeth (dmft) was 7.1, and by excluding caries free children it was 8.5. The decay component of dmft was predominant (82%). Almost 90% of …
