Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a rapidly growing national trend in the provision of public transportation. At present, with more than 150 New Start Rail Projects currently in the FTA pipeline, a wide range of alternatives is necessary to fulfill the demand for cost-effective rapid public transportation. As a lower cost, high-capacity mode of public transportation, BRT can serve as an option to help address the growing traffic congestion and mobility problems in both urban and nonurban areas. Careful documentation and analyses of BRT systems and the unique features of these projects will help determine the most effective features offered …

Attracting people to public transit in urban areas has proven to be a difficult task indeed. Recent research on the transportation–land use connection has suggested that transit use can be increased through transit-friendly land use planning. While significant evidence exists that a relationship between land use and transit is apparent, the exact nature of the relationship remains ambiguous. Despite the murky nature of the relationship, many practitioners and researchers have asserted claims regarding land use policy, namely TOD, and its effect on travel. Evaluating The Urban Commute Experience: A Time Perception Approach, Yuen-Wah Li
Journal of Public Transportation
This article examines the perception of travel time and evaluation of the urban commute experience. It reviews the literature on time perception in psychology, positing perceived travel time as a function of commute characteristics, journey episodes, travel environments, and expectancy. Insights from emerging behavioral economics are drawn to illuminate evaluation of the urban commute experience. The perception–evaluation correspondence presents the potential of a new research approach to travel behavior. A time perception model for evaluating urban commute experience is formulated to accommodate all the posited relationships, with possible moderations by goal attainment, economic values associated, and time urgency. The Relationship Between Childbirth Experience And Psychological Functioning In The Postpartum Period, Dena Dian Daniel

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationships between the mother's perception of the birth experience, symptoms of the post-traumatic stress, and symptoms of postpartum depression. Sixty-seven participants ranging from 17 to 40 years of age completed a self-report questionnaire containing items from three instruments including the Perception of Birth Scale, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and the Davidson Trauma Scale. The findings reveal a more negative perception of the birth experience is significantly related to a greater frequency and/or. severity of. post- traumatic stress and postpartum depression symptoms following childbirth., These findings support the conclusion that an …

A Survey Of Student Term-Time Employment: Choosing Subpopulations For Further Study, Patrick Hughes, Bruce I. Mallette
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Despite substantive research at the national level, local institutional information on students who work off campus while enrolled full time has been sparse. After considering the need for local studies examining the causes of term-time employment and employment's role in persistence, this research explores the appropriateness of using total student cohorts as opposed to subpopulations restricted to financial aid applicants. Distinguishing between residency groups is also considered. The analyses demonstrate that employment was locally substantial, persistence studies are best paired with total populations, and employment studies are best paired with populations restricted to students who have financial aid data on …

Hot Melt Inks For Rotogravure-Formulation, Printability And Rheology, Hrishikesh Shreeram Bhide

A new generation of "Hot melt inks for Rotogravure" was formulated. They melt during heating and reach printable viscosity between 75° C and 130° C, depending on formulation. After printing onto substrate, they solidify. Selections of the best formulations were done based on ink rheology, and print analysis. The formulated inks were also printed on the Moser sheet-fed proofing press .. The rheological data indicated that hot melt inks (without viscosity modifier) have viscosity in the range of 10°-101 Poise at 95°C. The subject patient was a case of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Because of recurrent fine vertebral fracture combined with pseudoarthrosis and neurological deficiency, the patient had received several conventional surgical interventions over ten years. A year before the present admission, the patient suffered lower limbs weakness and received surgical intervention with thoracic corpectomy and fixation with vertebral prosthesis, anterior spinal instrumentation and posterior fusion with pedicle screw at Stanford hospital in the U.S.A. The patient tolerated the procedure well and achieved some improvement in his leg sensation and muscle power. The patient then returned to Taiwan for rehabilitation therapy at Chang-Gung …

The objective of this stud is to compare the efficacy between mobilization with movement (MWM) and end-range mobilization techniques (EMTs) in the management of adhesive capsulitis. Eighteen and twenty-two patients from MWM and EMT groups, respectively, who returned after two-week follow-up were evaluated. This was a randomized, evaluator-blind, parallel comparison study. Active and passive range of motion (ROM) for flexion, internal and external rotation, abduction and pain scale were assessed regularly by the same physical therapist. Postural hypotension is often observed in patients with cervical spinal cord injury. It may cause syncope, and interfere with sitting and standing trainings. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) was reported to be able to alleviate and even prevent postural hypotension. The exact mechanism is not certain yet, but it may be related to vagal reflexes or muscle pumping actions. To investigate the effect of NMES on tetraplegic patients, we have recruited 10 patients with acute cervical spinal cord injuries (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale A and B) suffering from postural hypotension. Little is known about the relation of planned exercise to insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes in Taiwan. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the effects of a 12-week aerobic exercise program on insulin sensitivity, serum lipids, cardiorespiratory fitness, and blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes. This study had a quasi-experimental design and used purposive sampling. The samples consisted of 13 eligible patients with type 2 diabetes. In the United States, the hospital-based fitness centers were rapidly developed in recent years and, in fact, they have already had over twenty years history. However, the concept is just at beginning stage in Taiwan. This investigation was directed against the managers of the hospital in Taiwan. To collect the interest of cognition and willingness of hospital managers on the issue of setting up a fitness center. One hundred and ninety-eight questionnaires were sent out and 138 reclaimed. The rate of reclaims was 69.7%. They included 78 managers of doctor and 60 managers of non-doctor. The results of the study …

This work describes motor, cognition and emotional problems in a child with Moyamoya disease before and after rehabilitation. Following comprehensive rehabilitation, the girl achieved improved gross motor, fine motor, cognition and emotional control. Moyamoya disease is an important cause of childhood ischemic stroke. Moyamoya disease has a bimodal age distribution, with one group of pediatric age (around first decade of life), and a second group of adults in the 30 to 40-year-old age range. Moyamoya disease involves progressive idiopathic stenosis and eventual occlusion of the large cerebral arteries at the circle of Willis. The pathogenesis of Moyamoya disease remains unclear. …

A 55-year-old male patient suffered from left intracranial hemorrhage received craniotomy and removal of intracerebral hematoma. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt was implanted for the complication of hydrocephalus. The skull was put back later because of stable status. He developed scalp necrosis and, therefore several times of debridement was done. The skull was taken away under the suspicion of osteomyelitis. However, he had vomiting, somnolence, urinary incontinence and unable to walk two months after this procedure. Computed tomography showed slit ventricles in right hemisphere. The shunt was then removed and his clinical conditions improved. Slit ventricle syndrome is commonly seen in children, rather …
