A method for forming a miniaturized shaped component. Bulk superplastic material is contacted with a flat rotating surface of a rotating tool to frictionally heat the bulk superplastic material with the bulk superplastic material positioned between the flat rotating surface of the tool and a micro fabricated tool die. The bulk superplastic material is forced into the microfabricated die once the bulk superplastic material is heated to a temperature between a glass transition temperature and a crystallization temperature.

The flavoenzyme tryptophan 2-monooxygenase catalyzes the oxidation of tryptophan to indole acetamide, carbon dioxide, and water. The enzyme is a homologue of L-amino acid oxidase. In the structure of L-amino acid oxidase complexed with aminobenzoate, Tyr372 hydrogen bonds with the carboxylate of the inhibitor in the active site. All 10 conserved tyrosine residues in tryptophan 2-monooxygenase were mutated to phenylalanine; steady state kinetic characterization of the purified proteins identified Tyr413 as the residue homologous to Tyr372 of L-amino acid oxidase. The flavoprotein tryptophan 2-monooxygenase catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of tryptophan to indole acetamide. We have previously identified tryptophan 2-monooxygenase as a homologue of L-amino acid oxidase [Sobrado, P., and Fitzpatrick, P. F. (2002) Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 402, 24-30]. On the basis of the sequence comparisons of the different LAAO family members, Arg98 of tryptophan 2-monooxygenase can be identified as an active site residue which interacts with the carboxylate of the amino acid substrate. The catalytic properties of R98K and R98A tryptophan 2-monooxygenase have been characterized to evaluate the role of this residue. Mutation of Arg98 to lysine decreases the first-order …

A variable potential ion guide for placement within the reflectron of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer includes an elongate resistive electrode placed axially within the reflectron. The electrode may be a non-conductive monofilament coated with a resistive polymer coating, with one end of the electrode coupled to a high potential source, the electrode carrying a potential gradient along its length.

A method for using an organic compound to label polynucleotides is described. The method utilizes an organic compound including an oligonucleotide, an electrophilic active site, an active complex, and a phosphate binding site. The oligonucleotide has a sequence that is complimentary to a specific region of a polynucleotide. This facilitates labeling of DNA or RNA at a specific site in its sequence. The active site consists of a stable precursor, and only becomes reactive upon activation. A nozzle for a laser-plasma EUV radiation source that provides thermal isolation between the nozzle body and the target material flowing therethrough. A target delivery tube is provided that extends through the nozzle body. The delivery tube has an expansion aperture positioned behind an exit collimator of the nozzle body. The delivery tube is made of a low thermal conductivity material, such as stainless steel, and is in limited contact with the nozzle body so that heating of the nozzle body from the plasma does not heat the liquid target material being delivered through the delivery tube. An optical system and method are disclosed for multiplexing or de-multiplexing channels within a wavelength band. The optical signals carried on the system comprise separate channels 1 through n, each having a unique passband and a center wavelength spaced from the center wavelength of adjacent channels by d nm. The signals are semi-multiplexed, demultiplexed, or semi-demultiplexed by an interleaver comprising optically matched and directly optically coupled etalons. Variety selection is a fundamental element in a sound crop production program. This report contains variety recommendations, descriptions, and yield data for the spring-seeded small grains – hard red spring wheat, oat, and barley, along with the fall-seeded small grain –hard red winter wheat. Key factors in variety selection include yield, yield stability, maturity, straw strength, height, test weight, quality, and disease resistance. Yield is an important factor; however, a variety with good disease resistance, straw strength, and high grain quality may be more profitable in some cases than the highest yielding variety. The adaptive immune system of placental mammals has evolved to tolerate the fetus. Rejection of the fetus by adaptive immune responses is therefore a rare event, with abortion being caused more frequently by inflammation in the placenta. This review will cover recent aspects of immune privilege and the innate immune system at the feto-maternal interface, citing examples of the role played by microbial infections in fetal demise.
