The Anchor, Volume 117.05: September 17, 2003, Hope College
The Anchor: 2003
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

We study the dependence on the number of colors of the leading pi pi scattering amplitude in chiral dynamics. We demonstrate the existence of a critical number of colors for and above which the low energy pi pi scattering amplitude computed from the simple sum of the current algebra and vector meson terms is crossing symmetric and unitary at leading order in a truncated and regularized 1/Nc expansion. The critical number of colors turns out to be Nc=6 and is insensitive to the explicit breaking of chiral symmetry. Below this critical value, an additional state is needed to enforce the …

Voices From The Third Shift: Advocate/Caregiver Perceptions Of Effective Communication In Medical Encounters, Terri Babers-M.
Voices From The Third Shift: Advocate/Caregiver Perceptions Of Effective Communication In Medical Encounters, Terri Babers-M.
Communication
A review of related literature, together with experiential understandings of the author, indicates that interpersonal communication in medical encounters is often triadic rather than dyadic in nature. The central interest of this research is to understand what commonalities of lived experience exist for women who act as advocate/caregivers communicating in medical encounters. The distinction of this study is that the focus is on the socially constructed, lived-experiences of the advocate/caregiver and her understandings of communication effectiveness in interpersonal communication in the medical encounter, rather than on the needs, responsibilities, and competencies of either the provider or the patient. A qualitative …

Trust Negotiation For Authentication And Authorization In Healthcare Information Systems, Charles D. Knutson, Kent E. Seamons, Tore L. Sundelin, David K. Vawdrey
Faculty Publications
The expanding availability of health information in an electronic format is strategic for industry-wide efforts to improve the quality and reduce the cnst of health care. The implementation of electronic medical record systems has been hindered by inadequate security provisions. This paper describes the use of frust negotiation as a framework for providing authentication and access control services in healthcare information systems. nust negotiation enables two parties with no pre-existing relationship to establish the trust necessary to perform sensitive transactions via the mutual disclosure of attributes contained within digital credentials. An extension of this system, surrogate irusf negoikiion is introduced …
Cattle Prices Are Record High, Aren’T They?, Dillon Feuz
Cattle Prices Are Record High, Aren’T They?, Dillon Feuz
Cornhusker Economics
Holy Cow! Can you believe the current cattle market? Fed cattle prices in Nebraska exceeded $90 per cwt. the week of September 7-13. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange September Feeder Cattle contract traded over $100 per cwt. A set of 5-weight steer calves sold for $120 per cwt. in North Platte on September 9. These are record high prices. But how high are these prices in relationship to other prices, or when you adjust them for inflation? Before answering that question, let’s first consider what has brought the market to this point.

Turfgrass Performance For Golf Courses In Southcentral Alaska, Allen Mitchell, Ray Gavlak, Beth Hall, Timothy Evers
Turfgrass Performance For Golf Courses In Southcentral Alaska, Allen Mitchell, Ray Gavlak, Beth Hall, Timothy Evers
Research Progress Reports
There are currently more than 20 public golf courses in Alaska that suffer varying degrees of winter turf injury from diseases, ice suffocation, and winterkill. For example, during the winter of 2001–2002, essentially every green and many fairways in Alaska suffered some degree of winter injury resulting in significant expense to reseed. The current study evaluated and compared new varieties and species against Nugget and Arctared on sand-based greens and soil-based fairways. We also assessed overseeding with rough bluegrass and bentgrass as a remedial treatment to establish playable greens.
