Nancy Cantor, chancellor and president of Syracuse University, outlines a number of bold campus-communitypartnerships, many of which were integral to the Brown v. Board of Education Commemoration at the University of Illinois. She makes a passionate case for the arts as “a context for exchange” and “a medium for participation” in a society where “pervasive and longstanding racial divides” exist. Internal Dialogues: Construction Of The Self In The Woman Warrior, Ann Shirley Modzelewski

This thesis considers past autobiographical theory and questions whether it addresses the autobiography of the female writer. Autobiographies of Harriet Jacobs, Margaret Sanger, and Maxine Hong Kingston are examined to reveal their polyvocality, use of the autobiographical "I", and rhetorical strategies maintained in order to create a close relationship with the reader. Particular attention is paid to Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of dialogism and Sidonie Smith's autobiographical "I."

During the German occupation of Northern Italy (1943-45), the Italian populace lived under the grip of fear as Allied bombardments pummeled towns, Nazifascists raided villages looking for partisans, and food grew ever more scarce. When night fell many Italians had to contend with another menace, a mysterious aircraft that they were sure was specifically after them and their loved ones. So real and yet mysterious was this aircraft that they gave it a name: Pippo. No one was quite sure if it was German or Allied, single-engine or double-engine, if it dropped bombs, or what its primary mission was, but …

In August of 2000, the Report of the Panel on United Nations Peace Operations (the “Brahimi Report”) considered the issue of transitional civil administration as an element of United Nations field operations. The Brahimi Report recommended the creation of an interim legal code as part of a U.N. justice package so that any future UN transitional administrations would be able to address the issue of “applicable law” in the early stages of its mission. Using the experience of the United National Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) as a case study, this article establishes how and why a complete model …

Although some argue that everyone in the debate shares a passionate concern for the welfare of animals, a rift over this issue divides the shelter community. Ultimately, the best interests of animals may not be best addressed in a climate of controversy and criticism. To understand and perhaps reduce this controversy, the tensions fueling the no-kill conflict need to be identified and the breadth of the gulf separating its two camps assessed.

Gender stereotypes in fifteenth-century France depicted women as inferior, weak, and dangerous to men. Noblewomen in this society were constrained by these stereotypes which were promoted and reinforced by religious notions, literary motifs and the legal system. King Rene's experience of women was entirely contradictory to the image of women presented in medieval culture. A key figure in the political and cultural events of the fifteenth century, Rene was surrounded by powerful and influential women whose lives had little in common with medieval definitions of female identity. Welfare And Warfare: American Organized Labor Approaches The Military-Industrial Complex, 1949-1964, Edmund Wehrle

Historians have been almost unanimous in condemning American organized labor's postwar relationship with the military-industrial complex.(1) Most follow Nelson Lichtenstein's assessment of a movement sacrificing militancy in favor of a junior partnership in a corporate state dominated by employers and the state. This capitulation legitimized managerial authority, validated a regressive economic system, and latched labor's wagon to a reactionary foreign policy and an emerging garrison state(2) This latter relationship, in particular, has galled critics of American organized labor. By the 1970s, they could assert, as did even "labor priest" Monsignor Charles Owen Rice, that labor had become a "lackey of …

Autism is a disability that falls into the continuum of Pervasive Developmental Disorders that most significantly affects a person’s ability to communicate with others. The cause of autism is unknown although hundreds of thousands of individuals are affected by it every year. This thesis examines the effects of sensory stimulation reduction in the classroom on the attentiveness of students with autism.
