Erik Luna in his contribution to this Symposium has provided us with a critique of mainstream theories of punishment that is without exception. He laments the endless trench warfare between proponents of these different positions and advocates a theoretical synthesis that is procedural.' I agree there is much to be synthesized, and there is particular virtue in synthesizing explanatory and normative theories. But one of the reasons there is virtue in such synthesis is that it enables us to see that some normative theories may be coherent in some possible world, but not in any empirically plausible world. Philip Morris Faces "The Truth": A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Persuasiveness Of Two Teen-Targeted Anti-Smoking Advertising Campaigns, Marybeth Mcmurray
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the persuasiveness of anti-smoking television advertisements aimed at teens and produced by Philip Morris's Youth Smoking Prevention Program and the American Legacy Foundation's truth campaign. The advertisements are analyzed rhetorically using Kenneth Burke's dramatistic approach, supplemented by theory related to persuasive advertising, characteristics of at-risk adolescents, persuasive attack, and persuasive defense (apologia).
The analysis indicates that strong central themes present in both the Philip Morris and truth campaigns act as a means of rhetorical persuasion, but are not necessarily rhetoric designed to persuade adolescents not to smoke cigarettes. The truth campaign advertisements contain both strengths and weaknesses. …

In the space of one generation, through both national and international agreements, nations have established norms and a framework for environmental stewardship of the Earth. One sign of the acceptance and maturation of environmental norms is that nations now worry about how to enforce environmental law and how to achieve compliance. Enforcement of environmental laws is essential to attaining the international objective of sustainable development. To be effective, this enforcement must be routine, reasonably resourced and predictable-an arduous challenge.
