This thesis is an exploration of the novella The Malady of Death by Marguerite Duras and my subsequent production of this book. It covers Duras' history and influences in writing this book while at the same time gives an account of all my directorial attempts with this piece. With regards to Duras, the influence of the nouveau roman writers in the mid twentieth century and her relationship at the time of her writing Malady is discussed. For my part, I divulge my initial exposure to the piece, the previous attempts to stage the work, my latest attempt with extensive research, …

The Use Of The Cornet In The Operettas Of Gilbert And Sullivan, John Christopher Schuesselin
LSU Major Papers
In this project the cornet parts in the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan are examined. First the cornet parts of Gilbert and Sullivan are compared to another composer of operetta, Jacques Offenbach, as well as a composer of opera, Giacomo Puccini. Next, the most important passages for cornet from the works of Gilbert and Sullivan are selected. They are grouped into three main categories: fanfare passages, section passages, and soloistic passages. Following each example are comments regarding context (what is taking place on stage and text) as well as performance suggestions (details concerning balance, phrasing, and orchestration). Appendix A contains …

Closed-Loop Controlled Total Intra Venous Anaesthesia, Chao Dong
Closed-Loop Controlled Total Intra Venous Anaesthesia, Chao Dong
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Anaesthesia is important for both surgery and intensive care and intravenous anaesthetics are widely used to provide rapid onset, stable maintenance, and rapid recovery compared with inhaled anaesthetics. The aim of the project on which this thesis is based was to investigate a reliable and safe methodology for delivering total intravenous anaesthesia using closed-loop control technology and bispectral analysis of human electroencephalogram (EEG) waveform. In comparison with Target Controlled Infusion (TCI), drug effect is measured during drug infusion in closed loop anaesthesia (CLAN). This may provide superior safety, better patient care, and better quality of anaesthesia whilst relieving the clinician …

Not Art: An Action History Of British Underground Cinema, Duncan Reekie
Not Art: An Action History Of British Underground Cinema, Duncan Reekie
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
My thesis is both an oppositional history and a (re)definition of British Underground Cinema culture (1959 - 2(02). The historical significance of Underground Cinema has long been ideologically entangled in a mesh of academic typologies and ultra leftist rhetoric, abducting it from those directly involved. The intention of my work is to return definition to the 'object' of study, to write from within. This process involves viewing the history of modem British culture not as a vague monolithic and hierarchic spectrum but rather as a distinct historical conflict between the repressive legitimate Art culture of the bourgeoisie and the radical …
Tauhid And Tasawwuf: Indonesian Sufism In Search Of Unity, Natasha Ryan
Tauhid And Tasawwuf: Indonesian Sufism In Search Of Unity, Natasha Ryan
Theses : Honours
The Islamic principle of Tauhid (Divine Unity) is foundational to Islam and Tasawwuf, better known to us as Sufism. Within the Indonesian consciousness of Islam, Tauhid can also mirror Indonesia's national motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), its understanding of tolerance reverberating with the purity of Islam. The recent renewal of Sufism in Indonesia may provide a Sufi paradigm shift to help relieve some tension surrounding an emergent Islamist intolerance, thereby smoothing the rising waters of uncertainty flowing alongside the current Islamic resurgence. While it is generally rare for Australians to take an interest in Indonesia's mystical Islamic culture, …

Indentity-In-Motion : The Narrative Duration Of The Dis/Continous Film Moment, Maria Walsh
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The trajectorv of this thesis is set out like a journey upon which encounters are staged between two films. film theor), and philosophers. such as Slavoj Zizek. Gilles Deletize, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. An encounter with a moment of image suspension. a cut to the blank screen- in Tacita Dean's film, Disappearance atSea (1996). motivates the beginning of this journey's narrative. My reading of this moment counters the way that suspended film moments have been discussed in terms of non-narrative in 1970s film theory and in the contemporary psychoanalýlic filin theory of Slavoj Zizek. Using Gilles Deleuze's notion of narrativization as …

The Songs Of Madeleine Dring: Organizing A Posthumous Legacy, Wanda Brister

This document is dedicated to the published songs of British composer Madeleine Dring (1923--1977). A look at Dring's musical background, upbringing, training, and career is followed by a close examination of her art songs for solo voice. Dring, composer of works for solo piano, pieces for small ensemble, and for voice and piano, was quite active as a composer in the 1940s through her premature death in 1977. Few of her pieces for voice and piano were published at the time of her death. This study relates the journey of …

Four nationally recognized writers conducted public readings at UNLV, and those that attended these events were the subject of this study. Through employing the logit and probit methods of estimation in a theoretical Random Utility Model, the mean willingness to pay to attend …
Converging Behaviorist And Constructivist Theories In Classroom Settings, Lisa M Freitas
Converging Behaviorist And Constructivist Theories In Classroom Settings, Lisa M Freitas
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Educators attempts to meet the needs of all students become more difficult as school districts are forced to reduce spending which may result in increased class sizes, elimination of second language and enrichment programs, and a reduction in school personnel at school sites. With these budget cuts the demands placed on educators will be even greater. Teachers will be forced to implement new strategies to ensure that no child is left behind. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of converging behaviorist and constructvist theories into classroom management and instructional practices. Three groups of students were randomly …

Preserving Art Music In The Mountain State: A Study Of The West Virginia Federal Music Project Orchestras, 1935-1939., Travis D. Stimeling
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Federal Music Project of the Works Progress Administration (FMP) came to West Virginia in 1936 to establish orchestras in the state’s cities and to provide short-term employment for instrumentalists left destitute by the Depression and the advent of recorded sound. These ensembles were also designed to serve a subsidiary purpose: presenting free musical entertainment to the general public to alleviate temporarily the psychological burdens of the Depression. Implicit in their concerns for both displaced audiences and unemployed performers was the existence, prior to the onset of the economic crises of the 1930s, of a thriving culture for art music …

Covert Violence In Nursing, Susette Bakker
Covert Violence In Nursing, Susette Bakker
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
There is no official avenue in nursing for the reporting of incidences of covert violence to staff and so they remain unrecorded and often stressful. This study sought to collect data from currently employed nurses concerning covert violence in their workplace, and to collate the information to obtain a valid assessment of this hidden problem. A qualitative methodology was used to report on the experiences of nurses in relation to covert violence directed at them by their peers, other health professionals, patients and patients' families. The participants were all registered nurses employed by a suburban health service. Each was given …
