Representation Of The Courtesan In Balzac's "La Cousine Bette", Flaubert's "L'Education Sentimentale" And Zola's "Nana", Christelle M. Monawar Jan 2003

Representation Of The Courtesan In Balzac's "La Cousine Bette", Flaubert's "L'Education Sentimentale" And Zola's "Nana", Christelle M. Monawar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Unlike the courtesan of romantic fiction, depicted as a sentimental and pitiful victim of social mores, the courtesan of French realism is rendered through the eyes of the nineteenth-century male bourgeois as a commodity to be consumed. Her body is objectified and fetishized, just as is her milieu of pleasure designed as legitimate compensation for the social delimitation of sexuality to reproduction. Through different direct and indirect narrative modes, Balzac as well as Flaubert and Zola often dehumanize, even demonize the courtesan for her power over male senses, overtly rendering her a scapegoat for society's decaying values and an open …

Rise And Fall Of The Boca "Pops", Maximillion Alexander Bako-Devant Jan 2003

Rise And Fall Of The Boca "Pops", Maximillion Alexander Bako-Devant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The history of the Boca Pops, so named because it performed popular rather than classical music, began in 1951 with a modest municipal band of 20 volunteer musicians who performed at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Boca Raton's Sanborn Square. Yearly, the Pops grew in size and popularity, dominating the local cultural scene, and, as success bred success, the Boca Pops grew into a Titanic. By the late 1980s, the Pops had blossomed into a 95-piece professional orchestra with an annual budget of $2.6 million. Obtaining funds from the state, corporations, ticket sales and wealthy social leaders, the Pops …

Teckno Culture: A Context For The Hybridization Of Belief Systems, Bryan R. Rill Jan 2003

Teckno Culture: A Context For The Hybridization Of Belief Systems, Bryan R. Rill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Teckno (or Rave) as a musical movement has rapidly spread across the globe. The youth culture that has developed has been sorely misunderstood by academia and media, often labeled as narcissistic, hedonistic, and lacking meaning. Contrary to these perceptions, Teckno culture is a collage of meanings. Long-term participation in Teckno culture has resulted in the development of new hybridized belief systems for many of the participants. Hybridization occurs as a result of exposure to multiple religious and mystic beliefs while in altered states of consciousness. This thesis explores the characteristics of these hybrids and identifies the seven elements that create …

Finding Their Voice: Jewish Women Artists In The 19th And 20th Centuries, Anita Mary Kirchen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

While Jewish women artists became active in the visual arts beginning in the mid-19th century, to date they have not been addressed as a group. This project presents a theoretical and historical overview of the work of six Jewish women artists---Rebecca Solomon, Charlotte Salomon, Helen Frankenthaler, Sonia Delaunay, Louise Nevelson, and Eva Hesse---examining their art in the context of their cultural heritage, Euro-American nationalities, social environments, life experiences, and contemporary art movements. Providing both representational and nonrepresentational artists---an important factor in Jewish aesthetics---this group includes both well-recognized artists and those whose work has only recently become known. For Delaunay, Frankenthaler, …

Metamorphose De L'Amour Dans L'Oeuvre De Colette, Lima Edwige Verdier De Jan 2003

Metamorphose De L'Amour Dans L'Oeuvre De Colette, Lima Edwige Verdier De

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Many critical studies of Colette, drawing heavily on psychoanalytic theory in order to explicate the biographical particulars of her life which are present in her works, have sought to brand the writer as feminine archetype of the free-spirited and inconstant libertine of the early twentieth century. But while such studies often note the general importance of the theme of love in Colette's works, they have tended to ignore both the larger literary metamorphosis which the theme of love undergoes and its metonymic links to the act of writing itself. Indeed, in Colette's works the letter and the mirror become privileged …

Other Side Of Fifty: The Crones Among Us, Bonnie Marie Benson Jan 2003

Other Side Of Fifty: The Crones Among Us, Bonnie Marie Benson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The playwright can be both a public intellectual and an agent for social change. In this creative dissertation, consisting of a series of essays and a full-length play, I demonstrate an alternative view of aging women to combat the pejorative images now current. Drawing on dramatic portrayals from the past 100 years and current information on aging in the United States, I explore the dominant viewpoint on aging women. Combining the structures of spiritual quest and rite of passage with an appreciation for the ritual that celebrates such events, I have written a play, The Crones Among Us, from a …

"Above The Noise And The Glory": Tiers Of Propaganda In Great War Literature, Margaret L. Clark Jan 2003

"Above The Noise And The Glory": Tiers Of Propaganda In Great War Literature, Margaret L. Clark

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

"Above the Noise and the Glory:" Tiers of Propaganda in Great War Literature illuminates the literary responses of Rupert Brooke, Mary Borden, Alice-Dunbar Nelson and Willa Cather to the manner in which the threat to one's cultural community, as well as personal and physical landscape, transforms a nation's, and even a world's, people from a state of complacency or purposelessness to one of jingoistic fervor. Prompted and inspired by personal, political and cultural forces, these writers mobilized early twentieth-century private citizens' spirits of nationalistic pride and solidarity. Individual chapters place within historical and literary contexts how war propaganda, particularly British …

Are These Queer Times? Gay Male Representation On The American Stage In The 1920'S And 1990'S, James Russell Couch Jan 2003

Are These Queer Times? Gay Male Representation On The American Stage In The 1920'S And 1990'S, James Russell Couch

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Utilizing a model based on Queer theory and comprising four relational paradigms, this thesis examines specific dramas of Mae West and Terrence McNally in an effort to understand the multiple relationships between the text, the society and the culture in the production of a gay male identity and its representation on the American stage in the 1920s and the 1990s. Each relational paradigm is the product of a different twentieth century scholar and can be viewed as an individual lens through which one aspect of a drama or culture can be magnified, illuminated or distorted. These paradigms are: culture and …

Development Of A Textbook With A Plan For Its Evaluation For The Acting I Course At Austin Community College, Jamee Kennedy

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this dissertation project was two-fold. Second, an evaluation plan for the textbook was developed to help determine the text’s validity.

The effectiveness of the text will be determined by the implementation of this plan. Based on the results of the evaluation plan, the administration at Austin Community College will make a recommendation to either adopt the text as is, modify the text, or to reject the text.
