Magnetotactic bacteria orient and migrate along magnetic field lines. Each cell is essentially a self-propelled magnetic dipole. The magnetic properties of these bacteria have been determined by a variety of techniques, including pulsed hysteresis measurements on single cells.

Design And Analysis Of Cylindrical Antiresonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide, Chyng Wen Tee, S. F. Yu Dec 2003

Design And Analysis Of Cylindrical Antiresonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide, Chyng Wen Tee, S. F. Yu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A field-transfer matrix method is developed to analyze the modal characteristics of cylindrical multilayered waveguides with axis-symmetric geometry. A new design rule for cylindrical antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROWs), based on a three-step design process, is also proposed to minimize the radiation loss of the fundamental leaky mode. In addition, a simple approach is suggested to estimate the optimum core diameter of the cylindrical ARROWs for optimum radiation loss and radiation loss margin. Hence, it can be shown that an extra high index cladding layer is good enough to reduce the radiation loss as well as to maintain a reasonably …

Host-Pathogen Interactions In A Segregating Population Of Bc2f2 Hybrid Castanea Dentata And Other Chesnut Hybirds After Exposure To Hypovirus-Containing And Hypvirus-Free Strains Of Cryphonectria Parasitica, Stephen Henry Alexander Dec 2003

Host-Pathogen Interactions In A Segregating Population Of Bc2f2 Hybrid Castanea Dentata And Other Chesnut Hybirds After Exposure To Hypovirus-Containing And Hypvirus-Free Strains Of Cryphonectria Parasitica, Stephen Henry Alexander

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

An F2 population of second backcross interspecific hybrid chestnut trees (BC2F2) and the progeny of the Chattanooga Chestnut Tree Project (CCTP) breeding program were exposed to three isogenic strains of Cryphonectria parasitica. Strain Ep155 (virus-free) was used to screen the 4- 7 year old chestnut trees for resistance to chestnut blight disease. Two virus-containing, hypovirulent strains, Ep155(CHV1-Euro7) and Ep155(CHV1-Ep713), were used to investigate interactions of host disease resistance and expression ofhypovirulence. The BC2F2 population varied from highly susceptible to highly resistant, as measured by Ep155 (virus-free) canker length at 95 days. Disease resistance in the CCTP population varied from highly …

Evaluating Runoff Water Quality And Ammonia Volatilization In Three Turkey Litter Application Methods, Michael Dale Shamblin Dec 2003

Evaluating Runoff Water Quality And Ammonia Volatilization In Three Turkey Litter Application Methods, Michael Dale Shamblin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Poultry litter is an important nutrient source in crop production. However, the traditional practice of broadcasting poultry litter on the soil surface could result in nutrient losses in runoff as well as substantial ammonia volatilization losses, which could adversely affect both the environment and agricultural productivity. This research compared nutrient runoff (natural and simulated) losses on 1 m x 2 m plots and ammonia volatilization from different turkey litter application methods (broadcast, surface-banded, incorporated band, and control) applied in triplicate. No significant differences were observed between any of the treatments in any of the runoff constituents measured. Over three runoff …

Enabling Work For People With Disabilities: A Post-Integrationist Revision Of Underutilized Tax Incentives, Francine J. Lipman Dec 2003

Enabling Work For People With Disabilities: A Post-Integrationist Revision Of Underutilized Tax Incentives, Francine J. Lipman

American University Law Review

Federal employment strategies for people with disabilities do not seem to be working. Scholars argue that the Americans with Disabilities Act and similar legislation that exemplify the disability theory of integrationism with the goal of integrating people with disabilities into mainstream employment cannot succeed. Society cannot eradicate barriers to employment for people with disabilities simply by the integrationist modest approach of reasonable accommodation. A post-integrationist approach may be required to provide legitimate equal employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

In December 2002, the General Accounting Office released its report on its study of three federal business tax incentives to encourage …

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

A research consortium comprised of representatives from several universities and national laboratories has been established as part of this project to generate internal and external dose conversion coefficients for radionuclides produced in spallation neutron sources. Information obtained from this multi-year study will be used to support the siting and licensing of future accelerator-driven nuclear initiatives within the U.S. Department of Energy complex, including the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) Projects. Determination of these coefficients will also fill data gaps for several hundred radionuclides that exist in Federal Guide Report No. 11 and in Publications 68 …

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix: Quaterly Report September-December 2003, Spencer M. Steinberg Dec 2003

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix: Quaterly Report September-December 2003, Spencer M. Steinberg

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The recovery of iodine released during the processing of used nuclear fuel poses a significant challenge to the transmutation of radioactive iodine. This proposal will develop and examine the use of Fullerene Containing Carbon (FCC) compounds as potential sorbents for iodine release from the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. This work will also include the development of bench-scale testing capabilities at UNLV to allow the testing of the FCC material in a simulated process off-gas environment. This experimental capability will also be used to test other potential sorption materials and processes, such as natural organic matter (NOM) and other promising alternatives. …

Understanding Occupational Therapy: Medical Doctors And Doctors Of Osteopath’S Knowledge About Occupational Therapy In An Acute Care Hospital, Shereen A. Metwalli Dec 2003

Understanding Occupational Therapy: Medical Doctors And Doctors Of Osteopath’S Knowledge About Occupational Therapy In An Acute Care Hospital, Shereen A. Metwalli

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to discover whether medical doctors (MD) and doctors of osteopath (DO) at two large hospitals in the Midwest have adequate knowledge about the roles and functions of occupational therapy, its services and benefits to patients and its implications on interdisciplinary team success. Increasing the knowledge in these three areas could influence occupational therapy referral rates and, as a result, impact the quality of patient care. This study used a descriptive survey to collect data from 55 physicians. Respondents acquired their knowledge of occupational therapy through secondary sources within informal sources of information. A statistically …

Algal Vs. Macrophyte Inputs To Food Webs Of Inland Saline Wetlands, E. Andrew Hart, James R. Lovvorn Dec 2003

Algal Vs. Macrophyte Inputs To Food Webs Of Inland Saline Wetlands, E. Andrew Hart, James R. Lovvorn

Publications

Invertebrate food webs in wetlands were traditionally thought to be fueled mainly by decaying macrophytes, but recently it has been recognized that microalgae may be more important. In particular, the paradigm that shredders of vascular plant litter dominate food web processes may not apply to many wetlands where shredders are rare and microalgae more abundant. This issue is complicated by potential consumption of flocs of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from living plants, and of exopolymer secretions (EPS) from both autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes. In Wyoming, we used gut contents and stable isotopes to investigate organic matter sources for the …

Ponderomotive Shearing For Spectral Interferometry Of Extreme-Ultraviolet Pulses, Johan Mauritsson, Rodrigo López-Martens, Anne L'Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer Dec 2003

Ponderomotive Shearing For Spectral Interferometry Of Extreme-Ultraviolet Pulses, Johan Mauritsson, Rodrigo López-Martens, Anne L'Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer

Faculty Publications

We propose a novel method for completely characterizing ultrashort pulses at extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) wavelengths by adapting the technique of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction to this spectral region. Two-electron wave packets are coherently produced by photoionizing atoms with two time-delayed replicas of the XUV pulse. For one of the XUV pulses, photoionization occurs in the presence of a strong infrared pulse that ponderomotively shifts the binding energy, thereby providing the spectral shear needed for reconstruction of the spectral phase of the XUV pulse. © 2003 Optical Society of America.

Differential Recursion Relations For Laguerre Functions On Hermitian Matrices, Mark Davidson, Gestur Ólafsson Dec 2003

Differential Recursion Relations For Laguerre Functions On Hermitian Matrices, Mark Davidson, Gestur Ólafsson

Faculty Publications

In our previous papers we studied Laguerre functions and polynomials on symmetric cones Ω= H/L. The Laguerre functions ℓnv, n ∈, form an orthogonal basis in L2(Ω, dμv)L and are related via the Laplace transform to an orthogonal set in the representation space of a highest weight representations (πv, Hv) of the automorphism group G corresponding to a tube domain T(Ω). In this article, we consider the case where Ω is the space of positive definite Hermitian matrices and G = SU(n, n). We describe the Lie algebraic realization of πv acting in L 2(Ω, dμv) and use that to …

Design-Dependent Loads In Topology Optimization, Blaise Bourdin, Antonin Chambolle Dec 2003

Design-Dependent Loads In Topology Optimization, Blaise Bourdin, Antonin Chambolle

Faculty Publications

We present, analyze, and implement a new method for the design of the stiffest structure subject to a pressure load or a given field of internal forces. Our structure is represented as a subset S of a reference domain, and the complement of S is made of two other "phases", the "vold" and a fictitious "liquid" that exerts a pressure force on its interface with the solid structure. The problem we consider is to minimize the compliance of the structure S, which is the total work of the pressure and internal forces at the equilibrium displacement. In order to prevent …

Decoherence At Zero Temperature, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell Dec 2003

Decoherence At Zero Temperature, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

Most discussions of decoherence in the literature consider the high temperature regime but it is also known that, in the presence of dissipation, decoherence can occur even at zero temperature. Whereas most previous investigations all assumed initial decoupling of the quantum system and bath, we consider that the system and environment are entangled at all times. Here, we discuss decoherence for a free particle in an initial Schrödinger cat state. Memory effects are incorporated by use of the single relaxation time model.

Optimization And Feedback Control Of Constrained Parabolic Systems Under Uncertain Perturbations, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Ilya Shvartsman

Mathematics Research Reports

This paper concerns a minimax control design problem for a class of parabolic systems with nonregular boundary conditions and uncertain distributed perturbations under pointwise control and state constraints. We deal with boundary controllers acting through Dirichlet boundary conditions that are the most challenging for the parabolic dynamics.

Viewer-Based Directional Querying For Mobile Applications, Keith Gardiner, James Carswell Dec 2003

Viewer-Based Directional Querying For Mobile Applications, Keith Gardiner, James Carswell

Conference papers

With the steady and fast advancements in the integration of geographic information systems and mobile location-based services, interest in exploiting this technology for Cultural Heritage (CH) data sharing has become apparent. In this area there has been an increasing need to integrate positional information with non-positional data and add a spatial dimension to the definition of a users “context”. In this paper we describe an implementation of a viewer-based directional query processor that operates on an Oracle Spatial database. The spatial position and orientation are taken from the viewer’s perspective. Using this frame of reference a view-port is defined in …

Multi-Phase Homework Assignments In Cs I And Cs Ii, James Huggins

Computer Science Presentations And Conference Materials

ll of the panelists have used small sets of related programming assignments in introductory CS courses. These assignments are essentially larger programs which are developed during several separate phases. This approach has several advantages: • Students are able to develop more realistic and interesting programs. • Students are motivated to write better code as well as documentation. Those who don't are quickly confronted by the implications. • Student interest in completing the projects is better sustained, since there is continuity from one project to the next. • It models desirable techniques such as iterative development and encapsulation. • It demonstrates …

Galaxies At Z = 3 Around Damped Ly-Α Clouds, N. Bouché, James D. Lowenthal Dec 2003

Galaxies At Z = 3 Around Damped Ly-Α Clouds, N. Bouché, James D. Lowenthal

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We are exploring the connection between Damped Ly-α Absorption systems and Lyman Break Galaxies using deep m (5σ)=26 m - broad band imaging (UBVI) of four wide fields (0.25deg each) obtained at the Kitt Peak 4-m telescope with MOSAIC. Each field contains a DLA at z ∼ 3. We want to address the nature of DLA at high-redshifts: (1) Are the DLAs embedded in much larger systems of galaxies? (2) How does the spatial distribution of emitters in 3D (space and redshift) correlate with the absorber? Contrary to most previous DLA studies, we are not looking for the absorber, and …

Privacy Rights Versus Foia Disclosure Policy: The "Uses And Effects" Double Standard In Access To Personally-Identifiable Information In Government Records, Michael Hoefges, Martin E. Halstuk, Bill F. Chamberlin Dec 2003

Privacy Rights Versus Foia Disclosure Policy: The "Uses And Effects" Double Standard In Access To Personally-Identifiable Information In Government Records, Michael Hoefges, Martin E. Halstuk, Bill F. Chamberlin

UF Law Faculty Publications

The U.S. government maintains a vast amount of personally-identifiable information on millions of American citizens. Much of this information is contained in electronic databases maintained by federal agencies. Various Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requesters, such as journalists, marketers, and union organizers seek this information for different purposes including investigative reporting and targeted solicitations. These kinds of uses are known as "derivative uses" because this government-compiled information is requested for purposes other than the official purposes for which the information was originally gathered. These and other derivative uses of personally-identifiable information often implicate privacy concerns. Conversely, restrictions on public access …

The Adoption Of A Voucher System In Government-Funded Universities: Perspectives Of Higher Education Students And Workers Of Hong Kong, Bryan Cheung Dec 2003

The Adoption Of A Voucher System In Government-Funded Universities: Perspectives Of Higher Education Students And Workers Of Hong Kong, Bryan Cheung

Essays in Education

Instead of a direct transfer of public funds from government to higher education institutes, a student-centred funding method termed education voucher system is used. The core idea of a voucher system is that the public funding for tuition is being driven by student choice. This change of path of funding has two significant effects, students now have choices and institutes now have to compete for students.

The survey results show that both supply- and demand-side agree that: a voucher system would give students more choice; achieve equal right of choice in education; unpopular programmes and unpopular institutes might be axed; …

Ethical Issues In Defending A Terrorism Case: How Secrecy And Security Impair The Defense Of A Terrorism Case, Joshua L. Dratel Dec 2003

Ethical Issues In Defending A Terrorism Case: How Secrecy And Security Impair The Defense Of A Terrorism Case, Joshua L. Dratel

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article discusses the unique ethical and legal challenges faced by criminal defense attorneys in terrorism cases, particularly highlighting the impact of Special Administrative Measures (SAMs), the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), and the Classified Information Procedures Act (CIPA). These laws and regulations, expanded post-September 11, 2001, create significant barriers to effective representation, undermining the attorney-client relationship and constitutional protections. The article emphasizes how these measures not only complicate terrorism cases but also risk bleeding into other areas of criminal law, eroding civil liberties more broadly.

Scale-Dependent Associations Among Fish Predation, Littoral Habitat, And Distributions Of Crayfish Species, James E. Garvey, Jessica E. Rettig, Roy A. Stein, David M. Lodge, Steven P. Klosiewski

Publications

To predict how species establish and disperse within novel communities, the spatial scale at which competition, predation, and habitat interact must be understood. We explored how these factors affect the distribution and abundance of the exotic crayfishes Orconectes rusticus and O. propinquus and the native O. virilis at both the site-specific and whole-lake scales in northern Wisconsin lakes. During summer 1990, we quantified crayfish, fish predators, and fish diets in cobble and macrophyte sites in Trout Lake, comparing resulting patterns to those in 21 lakes surveyed during summer 1987. Within and across lakes, fish abundance was unrelated to habitat. Within …

Is Federal Preemption Efficient In Cellular Phone Regulation, Thomas W. Hazlett Dec 2003

Is Federal Preemption Efficient In Cellular Phone Regulation, Thomas W. Hazlett

Federal Communications Law Journal

While many recent state-level efforts to regulate various aspects of the cellular phone industry have been abandoned in favor of federal regulations, other attempts by state regulators still exist. For this reason, Thomas Hazlett proposes that federal regulation is generally more appropriate than state-level action, due to the nature of the cellular industry. After a brief history of the industry, the author analyzes the pros and cons associated with state and federal regulation. The Article then proceeds to address the efficiencies created by national networks and proposes that the fragmentation of controlling regulatory power would reduce these efficiencies. Following a …

The Role Of Efficiencies In Telecommunications Merger Review, Calvin S. Goldman Q.C., Ilene Knable Gotts, Michael E. Piaskoski

Federal Communications Law Journal

As a result of the recent telecommunications industry slowdown and the rise of globally integrated communications networks, mergers and acquisitions have become a commonplace occurrence throughout the developed world. In this article, Calvin Goldman, Michael Piaskoski and Ilene Gotts review recent merger and acquisition activity and discuss how the decisions to allow or deny “M&A” are viewed by regulatory agencies in the United States, the European Union, and Canada. The first part of this article addresses these three parties’ approaches to M&A consideration and how the concept of “efficiencies” generated by consolidation enters those deliberations. The authors then explore the …
