Multiwavelength Observations Revealing The Evolution Of The Outburst Of The Black Hole Xte J1118+480, S. Chaty, C. A. Haswell, J. Malzac, R. I. Hynes, C. R. Shrader, W. Cui Dec 2003

Multiwavelength Observations Revealing The Evolution Of The Outburst Of The Black Hole Xte J1118+480, S. Chaty, C. A. Haswell, J. Malzac, R. I. Hynes, C. R. Shrader, W. Cui

Faculty Publications

We report multiwavelength observations of the soft X-ray transient XTE J1118+480, which we observed with UKIRT, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), RXTE, Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and many other instruments and facilities. Adding radio (Ryle Telescope, VLA), submillimetre (JCMT) and X-ray (Chandra and SAX) data from the literature, we assembled the most complete spectral energy distribution (SED) of this source yet published. We followed the evolution of this source for 1 yr, including six observations performed during the outburst, and one observation at the end of the outburst. Because of the unusually high galactic latitude of XTE J118+480, it suffers from …

A Close Look At U (5) ↔ Su (3) Transitional Patterns In The Interacting Boson Model, Feng Pan, J. P. Draayer, Yanan Luo Dec 2003

A Close Look At U (5) ↔ Su (3) Transitional Patterns In The Interacting Boson Model, Feng Pan, J. P. Draayer, Yanan Luo

Faculty Publications

We study transitional patterns from the vibrational, U (5), to the rotational, SU (3), limit of the interacting boson model with a schematic Hamiltonian. The transitional behavior of low-lying energy levels, isomer shifts, E2 transition rates, and some other related quantities across the entire U (5) ↔ SU (3) transitional region are studied in detail. The analysis shows that nuclei in the critical region are soft. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Analysis Of Weight-Related Advertisements And Nutrition Articles In Popular Women's Magazines, Jennifer Cardall Jacobson

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: The purpose of this study was to discover whether the weight-related messages and themes from food advertisements in women's magazines reinforce or contradict the messages communicated in nutrition-related articles focusing on weight control within the same magazines.

Design: Content analysis of 48 issues of weight-related content six popular women's magazines, 2001-2002. There were three magazines in each of two categories, "homemaking" and "health." All food and nutrition advertisements were analyzed (n=954), along with all nutrition articles (n=336). Advertisements and articles were identified as being either weight-related or non-weight-related. Type of food/product advertised, claims used to market the product, and …

Increasing Security In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks By Incentives To Cooperate And Secure Routing, Brandy Michelle Tyson Dec 2003

Increasing Security In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks By Incentives To Cooperate And Secure Routing, Brandy Michelle Tyson

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

A mobile ad hoc network is a self-organizing network that relies on the cooperation of participating nodes in order to function properly. In this network, mobile users arrive within the common range of a wireless link and collaborate in constructing the network topology in order to facilitate communication. Mobile ad hoc networks do not rely on any fixed, centralized routing infrastructure, so there is no base station to provide connectivity. This must be provided by the participating nodes. Although mobile ad hoc networks are quite beneficial in sparse areas and rescue operations, they have several properties, such as unreliable wireless …

Paul Young Interview For The Lest We Forget Collection Of Oral Histories, Paul Young, Judy Leasure Dec 2003

Paul Young Interview For The Lest We Forget Collection Of Oral Histories, Paul Young, Judy Leasure

Lest We Forget (MS-396)

Judy Leasure interviewed Paul Young about his work with the mentally ill and developmentally disabled. The interview was part of the Lest We Forget Collection of oral histories that was created to capture the stories of those involved with mental health and those with developmental disabilities. There are two transcripts to cover the full interview. The project focused on stories and experiences of people from Ohio that lived at, worked in, or dealt with large institutions and the modern movement to smaller home settings and modern treatment of mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Rural Economic Development - An Evolving Approach, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel Dec 2003

Rural Economic Development - An Evolving Approach, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

In rural economic development, the old way of doing business no longer works. There used to be a time when all a community had to do was have an adequate infrastructure, a supply of low-cost labor, some tax incentives and a few empty spec buildings, and they could attract new businesses. Granted, there was still competition between communities to attract new businesses, but the components that communities had to work with were known commodities to both the potential firms and to the community.

Barriers To Domestic Violence Screening In The Emergency Department, Lisa Yonaka Dec 2003

Barriers To Domestic Violence Screening In The Emergency Department, Lisa Yonaka

Master's Projects

Are you in a relationship in which you're being abused? That is not an easy question to answer or ask. Identification of those who are victims of domestic violence is important to prevent further abuse and injury. The purpose of this non-experimental study was to determine barriers of Emergency Department Registered Nurses screening patients for domestic violence. 33 ED RNs completed a short anonymous questionnaire that was developed by Dr. Mary Lou Moore, Wake Forrest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The most significant barriers to screening identified, were the lack of education on how to ask questions about abuse, language barriers, …

He I Λ10830 As A Probe Of Winds In Accreting Young Stars, Suzan Edwards, William Fischer, John Kwan, L. Hillenbrand, Andrea K. Dupree

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

He I 10830 profiles acquired with Keck's NIRSPEC for six young low-mass stars with high disk accretion rates (AS 353A, DG Tau, DL Tau, DR Tau, HL Tau, and SVS 13) provide new insight into accretion-driven winds. In four of the stars, the profiles have the signature of resonance scattering, and they possess a deep and broad blueshifted absorption that penetrates more than 50% into the 1 m continuum over a continuous range of velocities from near the stellar rest velocity to the terminal velocity of the wind, unlike inner wind signatures seen in other spectral features. This deep and …

Linear Perturbations In Brane Gas Cosmology, Scott Watson, Robert H. Brandenberger Dec 2003

Linear Perturbations In Brane Gas Cosmology, Scott Watson, Robert H. Brandenberger

Physics - All Scholarship

We consider the effect of string inhomogeneities on the time dependent background of Brane Gas Cosmology. We derive the equations governing the linear perturbations of the dilaton-gravity background in the presence of string matter sources. We focus on long wavelength fluctuations and find that there are no instabilities. Thus, the predictions of Brane Gas Cosmology are robust against the introduction of linear perturbations. In particular, we find that the stabilization of the extra dimensions (moduli) remains valid in the presence of dilaton and string perturbations.

Apparatus And Method For Dispersing Nano-Elements To Assemble Device, Craig A. Grimes, Elizabeth Dickey

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

An apparatus for dispersing a first plurality of conductive elongated nano-elements distributed within a carrier-fluid to assemble a conductive device made of a first charge-receptive area of a support surface to which at least one nano-element has attached, including: a nozzle through which the elongated nano-elements are directed such that the nano-elements pass through an electromagnetic field for imparting a preselected charge thereto, and toward at least the first charge-receptive area. The charge-receptive area is given a charge such that it attracts a first end-portion of one of the nano-elements. Also, a method of assembling a conductive device. Steps include: …
