Response Of A Cascade Of Blades To An Incoming Turbulent Flow, Olivier Christophe Bocquillion
Response Of A Cascade Of Blades To An Incoming Turbulent Flow, Olivier Christophe Bocquillion
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of this research is to study the modification of a turbulent flow as it passes through a cascade of flat plates. The results will then be compared with experimental results obtained in a companion experimental study being conducted at Virginia Tech. In a typical marine propulsor turbulent flow passes through a set of inlet guide vanes (IGVs) and then interacts with the propeller blades: this process creates unwanted vibration and sound. The purpose of this research is to determine if the arrangement of the IGVs can be used to reduce the propulsor noise generation. In this study the …
School, Family, Community Partnership Predictor Model: Based On Principals' Communication And Action Strategies, Susan Beth Bernstein
School, Family, Community Partnership Predictor Model: Based On Principals' Communication And Action Strategies, Susan Beth Bernstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Family and community involvement literature reveals that principals play a key role in the success of family and community involvement initiatives. However, there is a paucity of information on specific strategies that principals use to increase involvement. This lack of information applies to schools in general and for schools with diverse populations with low socio-economic status. To help fill these gaps in information this researcher examines differences in communication and action strategies used by principals in, both Title I and non Title I schools, with exemplary family and community involvement programs (as evidenced by their school receiving the FL DOE …
Relationship Between The Perceived Leadership Styles Of Directors Of Associate Degree Radiography Programs And Faculty Satisfaction, Willingness To Exert Extra Effort, Perceived Director Effectiveness, And Program Outcomes, Gary Wayne Shaver
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The focus of this study was to examine the faculty-perceived leadership styles of directors of associate degree radiography programs and to determine if significant relationships existed between those styles and faculty perceptions of director effectiveness, faculties' satisfaction, and the faculties' willingness to exert extra effort. This study also examined the relationships between the directors' leadership styles and three radiography program outcomes: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam pass rate, program completion rate, and job placement rate. Further, the relationship between the directors' leadership styles and demographic information was also examined. Directors' leadership styles were measured with the Multifactor Leadership …
Simulation-Based Performance Evaluation Of Aodv Routing Protocol For Ad Hoc Mobile Wireless Networks, Deepa. Suryaprasad
Simulation-Based Performance Evaluation Of Aodv Routing Protocol For Ad Hoc Mobile Wireless Networks, Deepa. Suryaprasad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
An ad hoc wireless network is a network composed of mobile communication devices, which is designed to provide communication capability to satisfy the need of a temporary nature in an infrastructure-less environment. A routing protocol is necessary in ad hoc networks to ensure effective communication among nodes. This thesis presents a simulation-based study on the performance evaluation of Ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol, which is one of the core routing protocols being promoted by the Mobile Ad Hoc Networking (MANET) group of the Internet Engineering Task Force. An event-advanced simulation program was developed in C++ to simulate …
Simplistic Approach To Reactive Multi-Robot Navigation In Unknown Environments, William Thomas Mackunis
Simplistic Approach To Reactive Multi-Robot Navigation In Unknown Environments, William Thomas Mackunis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Multi-agent control is a very promising area of robotics. In applications for which it is difficult or impossible for humans to intervene, the utilization of multi-agent, autonomous robot groups is indispensable. This thesis presents a novel approach to reactive multi-agent control that is practical and elegant in its simplicity. The basic idea upon which this approach is based is that a group of robots can cooperate to determine the shortest path through a previously unmapped environment by virtue of redundant sharing of simple data between multiple agents. The idea was implemented with two robots. In simulation, it was tested with …
Shine: An Integrated Environment For Software Hardware Co-Design, Suryaprasad. Jayadevappa
Shine: An Integrated Environment For Software Hardware Co-Design, Suryaprasad. Jayadevappa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The rapid evolution of silicon technology has brought exponential benefits in cost, scale of integration, power per function, size per function and speed. The ability to place multiple function "systems" on a single silicon chip, reduce development cycle while increasing product functionality, performance and quality. With this increased complexity, ability to model at high level of abstraction becomes crucial. Also, the fact that no known existing complete system on chip design packages with perfect tools, models, and formalisms further slows down and complicates the development. This dissertation provides an integrated environment for hardware software co-design at a high level of …
Software Reliability Engineering With Genetic Programming, Yi. Liu
Software Reliability Engineering With Genetic Programming, Yi. Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Software reliability engineering plays a vital role in managing and controlling software quality. As an important method of software reliability engineering, software quality estimation modeling is useful in defining a cost-effective strategy to achieve a reliable software system. By predicting the faults in a software system, the software quality models can identify high-risk modules, and thus, these high-risk modules can be targeted for reliability enhancements. Strictly speaking, software quality modeling not only aims at lowering the misclassification rate, but also takes into account the costs of different misclassifications and the available resources of a project. As a new search-based algorithm, …

Studies On Information-Theoretics Based Data-Sequence Pattern-Discriminant Algorithms: Applications In Bioinformatic Data Mining, Tomas Vidal Arredondo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This research refers to studies on information-theoretic (IT) aspects of data-sequence patterns and developing thereof discriminant algorithms that enable distinguishing the features of underlying sequence patterns having characteristic, inherent stochastical attributes. The application potentials of such algorithms include bioinformatic data mining efforts. Consistent with the scope of the study as above, considered in this research are specific details on information-theoretics and entropy considerations vis-a-vis sequence patterns (having stochastical attributes) such as DNA sequences of molecular biology. Applying information-theoretic concepts (essentially in Shannon's sense), the following distinct sets of metrics are developed and applied in the algorithms developed for data-sequence pattern-discrimination …

Student Nurses Experiences Of Horizontal Violence In The Clinical Setting: Nurses Eating Their Young, Joy. Delez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of this research is to describe the lived experience of student nurses with horizontal violence in the clinical setting. Students were surveyed and interviewed regarding their experiences with specific behaviors of horizontal violence, and what actions, if any, were taken in response to the behavior. Five descriptive themes emerged from the data: "Hurry up," "Oh, she's just a student," "Don't worry about it; she's probably having a bad day," "Aren't you getting your BSN?," and "No opportunity to learn."
Static Error Modeling Of Sensors Applicable To Ocean Systems, Jeremy Fred Ah-Chong
Static Error Modeling Of Sensors Applicable To Ocean Systems, Jeremy Fred Ah-Chong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis presents a method for modeling navigation sensors used on ocean systems and particularly on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). An extended Kalman filter was previously designed for the implementation of the Inertial Navigation System (INS) making use of Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), a magnetic compass, a GPS/DGPS system and a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL). Emphasis is put on characterizing the static sensor error model. A "best-fit ARMA model" based on the Aikake Information Criterion (AIC), Whiteness test and graphical analyses were used for the model identification. Model orders and parameters were successfully estimated for compass heading, GPS position and …
Subsurface Flow Generated By A Steady Wind Stress Applied At The Water Surface, Lionel. Gurfinkiel
Subsurface Flow Generated By A Steady Wind Stress Applied At The Water Surface, Lionel. Gurfinkiel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A turbulent water current induced by winds, through a friction force at the sea surface and subjected to the Coriolis force in shallow water was studied. A Large Eddy Simulation model developed by Zikanov et al. is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. To define the bottom boundary condition, a drag coefficient parameter, based on the ideas of Csanady, is used to evaluate the shear stress at the bottom. To find a suitable bottom boundary condition for this LES simulation, several cases were considered with change in drag coefficient property. The effect of variation in the depth of the water …
Statistical Physics Based Heuristic Clustering Algorithms With An Application To Econophysics, Lucia Liliana Baldwin
Statistical Physics Based Heuristic Clustering Algorithms With An Application To Econophysics, Lucia Liliana Baldwin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Three new approaches to the clustering of data sets are presented. They are heuristic methods and represent forms of unsupervised (non-parametric) clustering. Applied to an unknown set of data these methods automatically determine the number of clusters and their location using no a priori assumptions. All are based on analogies with different physical phenomena. The first technique, named the Percolation Clustering Algorithm, embodies a novel variation on the nearest-neighbor algorithm focusing on the connectivity between sample points. Exploiting the equivalence with a percolation process, this algorithm considers data points to be surrounded by expanding hyperspheres, which bond when they touch …
Survey Of Design Techniques For Signal Integrity, Raghuveer. Karnati
Survey Of Design Techniques For Signal Integrity, Raghuveer. Karnati
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Signal Integrity is a major bottleneck for DSM designs. Signal integrity refers to wide variety of problems, which leads to misconception. Signal integrity causes delay or noise at the high-level, but this boils down to resistance, capacitance and inductance (RLC) at circuit level. Several analysis and reduction techniques were proposed for reducing these effects on signal integrity. This work solves the misconception by encompassing different problems Chat effect signal integrity and can be good reference for a integrated circuit designer. The objective is to analyze these modeling methods, reduction techniques, tools and make recommendations that aids in developing a methodology …
Sylvia Plath: The Cauldron Of Mourning, Michelle. Richards-Winkler
Sylvia Plath: The Cauldron Of Mourning, Michelle. Richards-Winkler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Sylvia Plath's poetry pulses with imagery and sound; it excites, disturbs, and unnerves. When Plath writes "I," one rarely questions the authenticity of the speaker. One feels privy to certain aspects of the poet's life experience. Her father's death, her subsequent psychotherapy, and the dissolution of her marriage contribute directly to the often surreal affect of the poetry. Plath's unique voice emerges from the bubbling cauldron of repetitive grief issues, existential tendencies, and patriarchy to create a new order of post-modern poetry. The thesis attempts to lead readers to a better appreciation of that poetry by demonstrating that Plath did …
Study Of Internet-Based Control Of Processes, Cristian. Popescu
Study Of Internet-Based Control Of Processes, Cristian. Popescu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In certain applications, one needs to control physical plants that operate in hazardous conditions. In such situations, it is necessary to acquire access to the controller from a different (remote) location through data communication networks, in order to interconnect the remote location and the controller. The use of such network linking between the plant and the controller may introduce network delays, which would affect adversely the performance of the process control. The main theoretical contribution of this thesis is to answer the following question: How large can a network delay be tolerated such that the delayed closed-loop system is locally …

Three-Dimensional Forward-Look Sonar Simulation Model, Julia. Gazagnaire
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The aim of this thesis is to develop a simulation tool, The 3-D Forward-Look Sonar Simulation Model (3-D-FLSSM), for the 3-D Forward Look Sonar or equivalent that provides insight to the defining characteristics of the sonar system that affect the image quality and the data processing. The simulator includes a representation of the acoustic environment, which incorporates a flat seafloor and spherical target, both of which are assumed to a have small-scale roughness (much less than the acoustic wavelength) associated with them. The backscatter from the target and the seafloor are calculated using the Rayleigh-Rice approximation implementing Kuo's backscattering cross …
Thermocline Tracking Using An Upgraded Ocean Explorer Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Mathieu. Clabon
Thermocline Tracking Using An Upgraded Ocean Explorer Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Mathieu. Clabon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis addresses the problem of tracking a thermocline---a layer of water showing an intense vertical temperature gradient---with an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). One of Florida Atlantic University's Ocean Explorer (OEX) AUV has been upgraded, as part of the work described here, by integration of a standard and convenient software interface, and used in several thermocline survey experiments aimed at gathering oceanographic data relevant to thermoclines. A tool that simulates the longitudinal motion of the OEX through a water slice, whose temperature map is read using a simulated temperature and depth sensor, has been developed. Using this tool and information …
Trailing Edge Noise Propagation Through A Cascade Of Blades, Charlie Desire Roy
Trailing Edge Noise Propagation Through A Cascade Of Blades, Charlie Desire Roy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Aircraft engine fan trailing edge noise prediction is very challenging. To achieve a better understanding of the physics of the propagation problem, the fan has been modeled as an infinite cascade of blades and acoustic monopoles and dipoles have been placed at the trailing edges. The flow has been computed using the Transonic Small Disturbance equation. As soon as the critical Mach number is exceeded by the free stream, a supersonic region that joins two consecutive blades appears. It completely blocks the sound and limits the study to entirely subsonic flow. In this type of flow, a sound propagation simulator …
Three-Dimensional Finite Element Model For The Biomechanical Analysis Of Total Ankle Replacement, Ha Van Vo
Three-Dimensional Finite Element Model For The Biomechanical Analysis Of Total Ankle Replacement, Ha Van Vo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The artificial ankle joint implant has been developed since 1970 after the relatively successful total hip and knee arthroplasty. The main goal of ankle replacement is to eliminate pain and preserve joint motion. Unfortunately, total ankle replacement (TAR) has not been effective as implant of other joints. Recently, published studies of early series showed that the newer second-generation ankle prosthesis have been improved with time. However, only one of the three current ankle designs is allowed by FDA to be used widely in the U.S. This study provides a new ankle design with an advanced approach in designs, biomechanical rationale, …

Teckno Culture: A Context For The Hybridization Of Belief Systems, Bryan R. Rill
Teckno Culture: A Context For The Hybridization Of Belief Systems, Bryan R. Rill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Teckno (or Rave) as a musical movement has rapidly spread across the globe. The youth culture that has developed has been sorely misunderstood by academia and media, often labeled as narcissistic, hedonistic, and lacking meaning. Contrary to these perceptions, Teckno culture is a collage of meanings. Long-term participation in Teckno culture has resulted in the development of new hybridized belief systems for many of the participants. Hybridization occurs as a result of exposure to multiple religious and mystic beliefs while in altered states of consciousness. This thesis explores the characteristics of these hybrids and identifies the seven elements that create …
Visual Spectral Sensitivity Of Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta L.) And Leatherback (Dermochelys Coriacea L.) Hatchlings: A Comparative Study, Judith P. Gocke
Visual Spectral Sensitivity Of Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta L.) And Leatherback (Dermochelys Coriacea L.) Hatchlings: A Comparative Study, Judith P. Gocke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In the ocean, lighting varies with habitat; the eye's spectral sensitivity must vary with visual ecology. Green turtles are the only sea turtle whose spectral sensitivity has been studied. Loggerheads and leatherbacks see visible light between 340 and 700 nm. However, the wavelengths detected with the greatest sensitivity by both species are those best transmitted at the specific depths where food, mates and predators are likely to be encountered. Both species have trichromatic vision, but the species differ in the concentration and peak sensitivity of each visual pigment resulting in either a broadly tuned (loggerhead) or finely tuned (leatherback) spectral …
Effects Of Flow On The Taxonomic Composition Of Everglades Periphyton, Barbara A. Hiaasen
Effects Of Flow On The Taxonomic Composition Of Everglades Periphyton, Barbara A. Hiaasen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Analysis of the relationship of velocity to taxonomic composition of periphyton-based stormwater treatment areas, in conjunction with other metrics, is a valuable tool for evaluating the phosphorus removal efficiency of this Everglades restoration advanced treatment technology. Periphyton taxonomic composition, biomass, water and tissue total phosphorus (TP), pH, and temperature were analyzed in three slow velocity (0.22 cm s-1) and three fast velocity (2.0 cm s-1) mesocosms. Loading rate, retention time and surface area were kept constant, with velocity the single variable between treatments. There was no significant difference in taxonomic composition, water TP, tissue TP, or temperature between the slow …
Electronic Structure Calculations For Alloys Using The Polymorphous Coherent Potential Approximation, Silvia Pella
Electronic Structure Calculations For Alloys Using The Polymorphous Coherent Potential Approximation, Silvia Pella
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The Polymorphous Coherent Approximation (PCPA) plays the central role in this study. The PCPA represents an extension of the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) in the sense that it treats an alloy model in which all of the atoms are allowed to have distinct charges and potentials. It makes use of the supercells that contain hundreds of atoms. The Madelung potentials at all sites are calculated exactly. The present calculations demonstrate the advantages of the PCPA over the CPA in explaining experiments that depend critically on the charge transfer in an alloy.
Energy Metabolism And Slow Skeletal Troponin I Phosphorylation In Cardiac Troponin I Null Mouse Heart, Yuanyuan Jia
Energy Metabolism And Slow Skeletal Troponin I Phosphorylation In Cardiac Troponin I Null Mouse Heart, Yuanyuan Jia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Troponin I (TnI) plays an important role in cardiac muscle contraction. Two TnI genes (cardiac and slow skeletal TnI) are predominantly expressed in the heart. In cTnI knockout mice, myocardial TnI deficiency results in a diastolic dysfunction and a sudden death in homozygous mutants. In the present studies, energy metabolism has been analyzed in myocardial cells from cTnI null hearts. Our results have demonstrated that damaged relaxation and increased Ca2+-independent force production in cTnI null hearts stimulated myofibril MgATPase activities accompanied by the increase of mitochondria quantity and ATPase activities. In addition, an increase of ssTnI phosphorylation level has been …
Enhanced Ticket-Based Qos Routing Protocols In Ad Hoc Networks, Chun-Jung Huang
Enhanced Ticket-Based Qos Routing Protocols In Ad Hoc Networks, Chun-Jung Huang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis describes QoS routing techniques in ad hoc networks. QoS routing is to find paths between given source and destinations that fulfill a set of QoS requirements. QoS routing in ad hoc networks is a challenging problem due to the dynamical nature of ad hoc networks and the complexity of the QoS routing problem. Ticket-based probing scheme (TBP) is a creative approach to solve QoS routing problem, however, its proactive nature makes it deficient and unscalable. In this thesis, we first present the adaptive ticket-based routing protocol (ATBR), a proactive protocol enhanced from TBP, by introducing a new imprecise …
Envirotronically Speaking: A Case Study Of Dis-Identification In Online Industrial And Oppositional Discourse About Global Warming, Mark A. Kattoura
Envirotronically Speaking: A Case Study Of Dis-Identification In Online Industrial And Oppositional Discourse About Global Warming, Mark A. Kattoura
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Corporations such as Exxon Mobil and environmentalist groups such as Greenpeace realize the potential of the Internet from a public relations standpoint. They have taken their industrial and oppositional discourse about global warming online through campaigns meant to appear motivated by grassroots impulses but which, as in the case of Exxon Mobil, are often motivated by profit. This study combines rhetorical and media studies approaches in performing semiotic analysis of online texts related to global warming. It concludes that corporations and environmentalists are making innovative use of this new medium in communicating their respective ideologies, but that corporate texts reflect …

This thesis discusses the implementation of a feed forward NN using time series model to predict the sudden rise or sudden crash of a company's stock prices. The theory behind this prediction system is Pattern recognition. Pattern recognition techniques for time-series prediction are based on structural matching of the current state of the time-series with previously occurring states in historical data for making predictions. This study reports the result of attempts to predict the Motorola stock price index using artificial neural networks (ANN). Daily data from January 1999 to December 2001 were taken from the NYSE. These data are classified …
Female Multiple Mating And Sperm Storage In An Arctiid Moth: Utetheisa Ornatrix, Ingrid M. Curril
Female Multiple Mating And Sperm Storage In An Arctiid Moth: Utetheisa Ornatrix, Ingrid M. Curril
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Utetheisa ornatrix females mate with many different males, but only one of their mates generally sires the progeny. To investigate the mechanism of this sperm precedence, the sperm contained within the spermatheca of field-caught females was counted. Captured females contained the remains of between 1 and 23 spermatophores, each received at a separate mating. The sperm number did not depend on the number of matings. These data suggests that sperm may be lost from the spermatheca, and that it may never arrive there after some matings. In addition to this investigation, a study on the pattern of arrangement within the …
