The Aqueous Phase Yield Of Alkyl Nitrates From Roo+No: Implications For Photochemical Production In Seawater, Elizabeth E. Dahl, Eric S. Saltzman, Warren J. De Bruyn Jan 2003

The Aqueous Phase Yield Of Alkyl Nitrates From Roo+No: Implications For Photochemical Production In Seawater, Elizabeth E. Dahl, Eric S. Saltzman, Warren J. De Bruyn

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Alkyl nitrates have been observed in remote oceanic regions of the troposphere and in the surface ocean. The mechanism for their production in the oceans is not known. A likely source is the reaction of ROO + NO (where R is an alkyl group). Steady-state laboratory experiments show that alkyl nitrates are produced in the aqueous phase via this reaction, with branching ratios of 0.23 +/- 0.04, 0.67 +/- 0.03, and 0.71 +/- 0.04 for methyl, ethyl, and propyl nitrate respectively. The branching ratios in aqueous solution are significantly higher than in the gas phase. Irradiation of surface seawaters yield …

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Individual Decision Rules And Emergent Social Norms, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan Butner Jan 2003

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Individual Decision Rules And Emergent Social Norms, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan Butner

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A new theory integrating evolutionary and dynamical approaches is proposed. Following evolutionary models, psychological mechanisms are conceived as conditional decision rules designed to address fundamental problems confronted by human ancestors, with qualitatively different decision rules serving different problem domains and individual differences in decision rules as a function of adaptive and random variation. Following dynamical models, decision mechanisms within individuals are assumed to unfold in dynamic interplay with decision mechanisms of others in social networks. Decision mechanisms in different domains have different dynamic outcomes and lead to different sociospatial geometries. Three series of simulations examining trade-offs in cooperation and mating …

Vectoral Federalism, Scott Dodson Jan 2003

Vectoral Federalism, Scott Dodson

Faculty Publications

In this Article, I offer a new framework for understanding federalism. “Vectoral federalism” engages directional metaphors—horizontal and vertical—to group various federalism doctrines together into two principal groups.Horizontal federalism concerns the battle between the federal and the state governments for the power to regulate individuals. Vertical federalism concerns the federal government’s power to regulate states and the states’ concomitant power to resist this regulation. Viewing federalism doctrines as having vertical or horizontal vectors (or both) identifies their common justifications and characteristics, which can assist in understanding and in applying the principles of federalism. The directional synthesis also illuminates and helps to …

Rights, Roles, And Reciprocity In Hindu Dharma`, Nancy M. Martin Jan 2003

Rights, Roles, And Reciprocity In Hindu Dharma`, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Hinduism offers both views of social relations – that of hierarchical complementarity and that of egalitarian complementarity. In what follows I will begin with a closer examination of the Hindu notion of dharma and the basis for these two views – hierarchical and egalitarian complementarity – within Hinduism, and then, disagreeing with Ambedkar, I will argue that Hinduism has a valuable contribution to make to global discourse on human rights, both (1) through the teachings of Hinduism which advocate non-violence and compassion and thus relativize the meaning of hierarchies of difference and (2) through the Hindu vision of human community …

Notes On Interpolation In The Generalized Schur Class. Ii. Nudelman's Problem, Daniel Alpay, T. Constantinescu, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma Jan 2003

Notes On Interpolation In The Generalized Schur Class. Ii. Nudelman's Problem, Daniel Alpay, T. Constantinescu, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

An indefinite generalization of Nudel′man’s problem is used in a systematic approach to interpolation theorems for generalized Schur and Nevanlinna functions with interior and boundary data. Besides results on existence criteria for Pick-Nevanlinna and Carath´eodory-Fej´er interpolation, the method yields new results on generalized interpolation in the sense of Sarason and boundary interpolation, including properties of the finite Hilbert transform relative to weights. The main theorem appeals to the Ball and Helton almost-commutant lifting theorem to provide criteria for the existence of a solution to Nudel′man’s problem.

Public Health And The Built Environment: Historical, Empirical, And Theoretical Foundations For An Expanded Role, Wendy Collins Perdue, Lawrence O. Gostin, Lesley A. Stone Jan 2003

Public Health And The Built Environment: Historical, Empirical, And Theoretical Foundations For An Expanded Role, Wendy Collins Perdue, Lawrence O. Gostin, Lesley A. Stone

Law Faculty Publications

In 2000, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Environmental Health issued a report that explored some of the ways in which "sprawl" impacts public health. The report has generated great interest, and state health officials are beginning to discuss the relationship between land use and public health. The CDC report has also produced a backlash. For example, the Southern California Building Industry Association labeled the report "a ludicrous sham" and argued that the CDC should stick to "fighting physical diseases, not defending political ones."

In this environment, it is understandable if the CDC looks to such …

Wills, Trusts And Estates (Annual Survey Of Virginia Law, 2002-2003), J. Rodney Johnson

Law Faculty Publications

The General Assembly of Virginia enacted legislation dealing with wills, trusts, and estates that added or amended a number of sections of the Virginia Code in its 2003 Session. In addition, there were three opinions and one order from the Supreme Court of Virginia, and one Virginia Circuit Court opinion, that raised issues of interest to the general practitioner as well as the specialist in wills, trusts, and estates during the period covered by this review. This article reports on all of these legislative and judicial developments.

Admissibility As Cause And Effect: Considering Affirmative Rights Under The Confrontation Clause, John G. Douglass Jan 2003

Admissibility As Cause And Effect: Considering Affirmative Rights Under The Confrontation Clause, John G. Douglass

Law Faculty Publications

In this essay, I first examine some of the strategic choices spawned by the Supreme Court's "microscopic" focus on reliability in confrontation-hearsay cases. Rather than promoting the value at the core of the Confrontation Clause-the adversarial testing of prosecution evidence-the Court's approach leads to choices that ignore that value. While the Court scrutinizes hearsay under the microscope of reliability, it leaves the parties free to ignore and even to avoid available opportunities for effective confrontation of the hearsay declarant. At the same time, the Court's constitutional definition of reliability-which it equates with "firmly rooted" hearsay exceptions -has encouraged prosecutors to …

Virtual Cross-Examination: The Art Of Impeaching Hearsay, John G. Douglass Jan 2003

Virtual Cross-Examination: The Art Of Impeaching Hearsay, John G. Douglass

Law Faculty Publications

Trial lawyers and judges are quite accustomed to courtroom battles over the admissibility of hearsay. But relatively few have much experience at challenging the credibility of hearsay. Once hearsay is admitted in evidence, even the ablest advocates typically proceed as if the hearsay battle were over, at least until the appeal. Few lawyers take advantage of the opportunities available to impeach the hearsay declarant. Consider the perspective of one experienced trial judge: I sometimes wonder at what seems to me the passing up of golden opportunities by the able advocate. Foremost among these lost opportunities is the virtual total neglect …

Contractual Choice Of Law And The Prudential Foundations Of Appellate Review, David Frisch Jan 2003

Contractual Choice Of Law And The Prudential Foundations Of Appellate Review, David Frisch

Law Faculty Publications

What are the advantages and disadvantages of appellate review of trial court rulings on issues of foreign law? What exactly does judicial review of unsettled questions of foreign law accomplish? What is its price? These questions are of considerable theoretical interest and immense practical importance. Their resolution calls for inquiries into the allocation of judicial authority and in its production of outcomes in the real world. The discussion proceeds first by briefly describing in Part II some of the causes and effects of the steadily increasing caseloads in appellate courts. After demonstrating that these caseloads may soon become unmanageable, Part …

Race, Politics, And Juvenile Justice: The Warren Court And The Conservative "Backlash", Barry C. Feld Jan 2003

Race, Politics, And Juvenile Justice: The Warren Court And The Conservative "Backlash", Barry C. Feld

Articles

A century ago, the Progressive reformers who created the juvenile court embraced a particular ideological construction of childhood as one of innocence and vulnerability. They also adopted a scientific conception of social control - positive criminology - that attempted to identify the causes of criminality and purported to treat, rather than to punish, offenders. The juvenile court combined the new conception of childhood with the new strategies of positive criminology to create a judicial-welfare alternative to the adult criminal process for juveniles. The juvenile court affirmed the responsibility of families to raise their children while expanding the state's prerogative to …

Ellman's "Why Making Family Law Is Hard": Additional Reflections, Robert Levy

Articles

Not the least of the pleasures of membership in this distinguished group invited to praise Ira Ellman was the opportunity it gave me to renew old and dear friendships with Arizona State faculty members and their spouses, to come back to the scene of my "adjunct visitor" gig last year, to see once again an effective dean whom I greatly admire. More important, the occasion allows me to praise publicly a scholar whose creative thinking, academic writing, legislative drafting and public performances as Reporter for the American Law Institute's Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution I have long respected.

A rigorous between-subjects methodology employing independent random samples and having broad clinical applicability was designed and implemented to evaluate the effectiveness of back safety and patient transfer training interventions for both hospital nurses and nursing assistants. Effects upon self-efficacy, cognitive, and affective measures are assessed for each of three back safety procedures. The design solves the problem of obtaining randomly assigned independent controls where all experimental subjects must participate in the training interventions.

Randomized Comparisons Among Health Informatics Students Identify Hypertutorial Features As Improving Web-Based Instruction, Craig W. Johnson, Yan Xing, Lan Yang Jan 2003

Randomized Comparisons Among Health Informatics Students Identify Hypertutorial Features As Improving Web-Based Instruction, Craig W. Johnson, Yan Xing, Lan Yang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Hypertutorials optimize five features - presentation, learner control, practice, feedback, and elaborative learning resources. Previous research showed graduate students significantly and overwhelmingly preferred Web-based hypertutorials to conventional "Book-on-the-Web" statistics or research design lessons. The current report shows that the source of hypertutorials' superiority in student evaluations of instruction lies in their hypertutorial features. Randomized comparisons between the two methodologies were conducted in two successive iterations of a graduate level health informatics research design and evaluation course. The two versions contained the same text and graphics, but differed in the presence or absence of hypertutorial features: Elaborative learning resources, practice, feedback, …

Temporal Analysis Of Floodplain Deposition Using Urban Pollution Stratigraphy, Wilson Creek, Sw Missouri, Kathy A. Shade

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Alluvial sediments record both hydrologic changes and variations of sediment quality affecting watersheds. This study uses urban pollution signatures as temporal tracers to date alluvial deposits along Wilson Creek located within Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Park in southwestern Missouri. The creek drains Springfield, the third largest city in the state, which was settled in 1833. This study has three main objectives: (1) review historical documents to develop a pollution history for the watershed; (2) determine if there is a correlation between heavy metal and phosphorus concentrations in sediment cores and the timing of release of those elements into the creek …

History Of Sedimentation And Contamination In Valley Mill Reservoir, Springfield, Missouri, Susan S. Licher Jan 2003

History Of Sedimentation And Contamination In Valley Mill Reservoir, Springfield, Missouri, Susan S. Licher

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The Valley Mill Reservoir (VMR) was constructed between 1851 and 1871 and drains an important recharge area of the drinking water watershed for Springfield, Missouri. Presently, management efforts to protect downstream water quality are aimed at using VMR as a non-point pollution and sedimentation basin since its watershed is planned for continued urban development. The morphometry of VMR is typical of most reservoirs with an elongated basin and the deepest point being near the dam. Sedimentation within the reservoir has created a delta formation with upstream wetlands and floodplains acting as part of the delta especially during the past. Little …

Spontaneous Magnetization Generated By Spin, Pulsating, And Planar Combustion Synthesis, Karen S. Martirosyan, J. R. Claycomb, G. Gogoshin, R. A. Yarbrough, J. H. Miller Jr., D. Luss

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The motion of the high temperature front during combustion synthesis of ferrite materials generates residual magnetization in cylindrical product samples. The combustion wave created a current density of up to 10 A/cm2, which influenced the magnetization distribution. The measured peak magnetic field intensity was up to 8 mT. Qualitatively different magnetic field maps were generated in ferrite samples synthesized by different combustion modes. The average magnetization vector generated by either planar or pulsating combustion was oriented at a smaller angle with respect to the pellet axis ~f<45°! than those generated by spin combustion ~60°

Mode-Cleaning And Injection Optics Of The Gravitational-Wave Detector Geo600, S. Goßler, M. M. Casey, A. Grant, H. Grote, Volker Quetschke

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The British–German interferometric gravitational-wave detector GEO600 uses two high-finesse triangular ring cavities of 8 m optical pathlength each, as an optical mode-cleaning system. The modecleaner system is housed in an ultrahigh-vacuum environment to avoid contamination of the optics and to minimize both the influence of refractive index variations of the air and acoustic coupling to the optics. To isolate the cavities from seismic noise, all optical components are suspended as double pendulums. These pendulums are damped at their resonance frequencies at the upper pendulum stage with magnet-coil actuators. A suspended reaction mass supports three coils matching magnets bonded onto the …

Variability Of Metals In Soils In The Sudbury Area (Ontario), Vera Spektor Jan 2003

Variability Of Metals In Soils In The Sudbury Area (Ontario), Vera Spektor

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Industrial development influences the natural and human environment. At the local scale, the most intensive industrial pollution is in the area of factories and industrial centers. Industrial pollution is concentrated in soil and vegetation (then, using water systems and trophic chains it may enter all ecosystem components). The industrial pollution of the Sudbury region includes mostly sulfur dioxide and heavy metals. The main goal of this study was to examine spatial variability in metal distribution in soil for the Sudbury area. Objectives of the work were to describe metal distribution depending on geographic factors such as topographic location, vegetation cover, …
