Generalized Predictive Control Of Ship Coupling Motions Using Active Flume Tanks, Abdulkarim Mohammed Alotaiwi Jan 2003

Generalized Predictive Control Of Ship Coupling Motions Using Active Flume Tanks, Abdulkarim Mohammed Alotaiwi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation uses the Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) approach to design a control system for a ship rolling motion coupled with the sway and yaw using an activated flume tank. GPC is a strategy based on system output prediction over finite horizon known as the prediction horizon. GPC controller is designed from the coefficients of the Autoregressive model with exogenous input (ARX) that are computed directly from input and output data. It computes the future control input based on the cost function with weighted input and output. System identification approach is implemented on the system to find the ARX coefficients …

Laser Emissions From Solid-State Dye-Doped Polymers, Chie Haw Lim Jan 2003

Laser Emissions From Solid-State Dye-Doped Polymers, Chie Haw Lim

Student Works (2000-2009)

Laser emissions were obtained from dye-doped polymers, namely, C460/PMMA, R6G(ClO₄)/PMMA, C460/PVA and R6G(ClO₄)/PVA, under the excitation from a Transversely Excited (TE) nitrogen laser. C460/PMMA and R6G(ClO₄)/PMMA slabs were fabricated by using a low-pressure-compression molding method; whereas C460/PVA and R6G(ClO₄)/PVA films were fabricated in the form of thin films by using the dip-coat method. Laser efficiencies of 8.7% and 3% were achieved from the optimum dye concentrations of R6G(ClO₄)/PMMA (1 x 10⁻³ M) and C460/PMMA (2.25 x 10⁻² M) respectively. For dye-doped PV A thin films, the laser efficiencies of 8.27% and 6.3% were obtained from the optimum dye concentrations of …

Religion, Faith-Based Community Organizing, And The Struggle For Justice, Richard L. Wood Jan 2003

Religion, Faith-Based Community Organizing, And The Struggle For Justice, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

On May 2, 2000, three thousand people converged on the State Capitol in Sacramento, California. But this was not the usual frenzy of lobbyists serving the interests of the well-off, using the tools of well-oiled political action committees. Rather, these were working poor, working class, and lower-middle income people lately referred to as working families and they went to Sacramento because they were tired of living on the verge of financial ruin or physical debility. Attendees were demanding adequate health coverage for people left out by current health care arrangements and they were angry about that, at a time when …

What Indian Tribes Can Do To Combat Child Sexual Abuse (Issue Paper), Larry Echohawk, Pawnee Indian Tribe, Tessa Meyer Santiago

Tribal Law Journal

One of the most destructive problems affecting children in "Indian country" today is sexual abuse. Increasing reports of child sexual abuse and the severe impact this type of crime has on Indian youth and their families have prompted tribal leaders to voice great concern about the impact of this crime on Indian communities.

Law Enforcement Authority In Indian Country, Melissa L. Tatum Jan 2003

Law Enforcement Authority In Indian Country, Melissa L. Tatum

Tribal Law Journal

The protection order has proven to be an effective tool in the war against domestic violence. A protection order, however, is good only so long as it can be enforced, and enforcement has proven to be a problem when a person travels with a protection order to a different jurisdiction.

The Supreme Court's Indian Law Decisions: Deviations From Constitutional Principles And The Crafting Of Judicial Smallpox Blankets, Gloria Valencia-Weber Jan 2003

The Supreme Court's Indian Law Decisions: Deviations From Constitutional Principles And The Crafting Of Judicial Smallpox Blankets, Gloria Valencia-Weber

Faculty Scholarship

The first section discusses sovereignty and the sources for foundational principles that pertain to the relationships among tribes, the states, and the federal government. The sources are the documented discourse and covenants of the constitutional evolution, the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union (Articles), and the Constitution of 1787 as they developed state jurisdiction related to Indian matters. Second, the paper discusses the colonial period and reality versus the fictions or myths of discovery and conquest. Third, the paper covers the conflict and unity in the pre-Revolutionary period. Fourth, the paper considers the Articles as the first U.S. model to …

Superfund Vs. Mega-Sites: The Coeur D'Alene River Basin Story, Clifford J. Villa Jan 2003

Superfund Vs. Mega-Sites: The Coeur D'Alene River Basin Story, Clifford J. Villa

Faculty Scholarship

Stretching across the "panhandle" of northern Idaho, the Coeur d'Alene River Basin evokes a mixed sense of wonder. Within this vast region of mountains and marshes, forests and farmland, creeks and canyons, a vibrant mining industry emerged more than a century ago. Along with the mining industry came the mining towns-and the mining pollution. Over time, the volume of mining wastes discharged into waters of the Coeur d'Alene Basin reached Brobdingnagian proportions: enough waste to fill a football field with a pile four miles high.

Un/Braiding Stories About Law, Sexuality And Morality, Margaret E. Montoya Jan 2003

Un/Braiding Stories About Law, Sexuality And Morality, Margaret E. Montoya

Faculty Scholarship

Traditional doctrine insists that we tame sexual desire by pretending that goodness and Godliness is defined by celibacy and abstinence, but the Church is simply wrong to insist that we accept a theology that negates and silences and suppresses a central part of our lives. To the extent that we believe in a life after death, many of us have won a chance at Heaven not by denying and suppressing our sexuality but by struggling to develop our capacity to experience joy through sexual desire and to honor the responsibility of not generating misery for ourselves and others through that …

Protecting Children From Pornography On The Internet: Freedom Of Speech Is Pitching And Congress May Strike Out, Dawn S. Conrad

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The Internet provides the First Amendment’s “freedom of speech” with a world of opportunity. Any person with access to the Internet may take advantage of a wide variety of information and communication methods. This unique medium, known to its users as cyberspace, is located in no particular geographical location and has no centralized control point, but is available to anyone, anywhere in the world with access." In the past twenty years, the Internet, a network of connected computers, has experienced extraordinary growth. The number of “host” computers, or those that store information and relay communications, increased between the years of …
