Fast Tracks In The Golden State: On California High-Speed Rail, Mti Report S-02-02, Mineta Transportation Institute

Mineta Transportation Institute

Two educational symposia on the future of high-speed rail in California were co-sponsored by the Mineta Transportation Institute, The Commonwealth Club of California, Town Hall-Los Angeles, and the California State Automobile Association. The events were held on July 17, 2003, in San Francisco and on July 18, 2003, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Comparison Of 3 Methods To Assess Urine Specific Gravity In Collegiate Wrestlers, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Daniel G. Drury Dec 2003

Comparison Of 3 Methods To Assess Urine Specific Gravity In Collegiate Wrestlers, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Daniel G. Drury

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Objective: To investigate the reliability and validity of refractometry, hydrometry, and reagent strips in assessing urine specific gravity in collegiate wrestlers.

Design and Setting: We assessed the reliability of refractometry, hydrometry, and reagent strips between 2 trials and among 4 testers. The validity of hydrometry and reagent strips was assessed by comparison with refractometry, the criterion measure for urine specific gravity.

Subjects: Twenty-one National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III collegiate wrestlers provided fresh urine samples.

Measurements: Four testers measured the specific gravity of each urine sample 6 times: twice by refractometry, twice by hydrometry, and twice by reagent strips.

Results: …

Investigation Of Electrical Properties And Structure Of Vacuum Evaporated C60 Films, Angiras D. Pandya Dec 2003

Investigation Of Electrical Properties And Structure Of Vacuum Evaporated C60 Films, Angiras D. Pandya

Masters Theses

C60 is an important electronic material and its properties can be tuned by thermal annealing process and solid phase crystallization process. These properties were investigated as a function of thermal annealing temperature and solid phase crystallization. However there is no systematical study on annealing effect and Solid Phase Crystallization of C60 films. In this study, the effect of thermal annealing on formation of nanocrystalline C60 thin films were investigated for annealed samples and solid phase crystallized samples. The C60 films described here were prepared by vacuum thermal evaporation method. The structural properties of C60 films …

Body Mass Of Late Quaternary Mammals (Data Set), Felisa A. Smith, S. Kathleen Lyons, S.K. Morgan Ernest, Kate E. Jones, Kansas State University, Tamar Dayan, Pablo A. Marquet, James H. Brown, John P. Haskell

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this data set was to compile body mass information for all mammals on Earth so that we could investigate the patterns of body mass seen across geographic and taxonomic space and evolutionary time. We were interested in the heritability of body size across taxonomic groups (How conserved is body mass within a genus, family, and order?), in the overall pattern of body mass across continents (Do the moments and other descriptive statistics remain the same across geographic space?), and over evolutionary time (How quickly did body mass patterns iterate on the patterns seen today? Were the Pleistocene …

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Sex And Race Inequities In Unemployment Insurance Benefits, Melissa Latimer Dec 2003

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Sex And Race Inequities In Unemployment Insurance Benefits, Melissa Latimer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This research makes a unique contribution to the growing body of literature on the welfare system by examining the relationship between sex, race, and social insurance benefits in a rural state. Using data from the West Virginia Unemployment Compensation Program, this research investigates sex and race differences in (1) monetary disqualifications for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits and (2) separation issue and nonseparation issue disqualifications of UI benefits. The analyses indicate that unemployed women, people of color, younger, and low income workers are the most likely to fail the monetary qualifications for UI benefits and to lose qualified weeks of UI …

Different Roads To The Rule Of Law: Their Importance For Law Reform In Taiwan, James Maxeiner Dec 2003

Different Roads To The Rule Of Law: Their Importance For Law Reform In Taiwan, James Maxeiner

All Faculty Scholarship

Talk of law reform is in the air throughout East Asia. Whether in Beijing or Tokyo or here, law reform is spoken of in terms of strengthening the Rule of Law. But what is the Rule of Law? Different legal systems have different roads to reach the Rule of Law. These different roads are noticeable mainly in the different emphases different systems place on two critical elements in the realization of the Rule of Law State, namely rules and the machinery for implementing the rules, i.e., courts and administrative agencies. The Rule of Law makes demands on both the legal …

College On Credit: How Borrowers Perceive Their Education Debt, Sandy Baum, Marie O'Malley Dec 2003

College On Credit: How Borrowers Perceive Their Education Debt, Sandy Baum, Marie O'Malley

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The fourth Nellie Mae survey of student loan borrowers in repayment reveals that education debt burdens remain manageable for most borrowers. A clear majority of those in repayment report that the benefits of the educational opportunities made possible through borrowing are well worth any problems associated with paying off the loans. There are, however, indications that negative attitudes towards education debt are increasing over time. Moreover, borrowers from low-income families are more likely than others to report repayment difficulties, even when controlling for current incomes and debt levels.

Pyro: A Python-Based Versatile Programming Environment For Teaching Robotics, D. Blank, D. Kumar, Lisa A. Meeden, H. Yanco

Computer Science Faculty Works

In this article we describe a programming framework called Pyro, which provides a set of abstractions that allows students to write platform-independent robot programs. This project is unique because of its focus on the pedagogical implications of teaching mobile robotics via a top-down approach. We describe the background of the project, its novel abstractions, its library of objects, and the many learning modules that have been created from which curricula for different types of courses can be drawn. Finally, we explore Pyro from the students' perspective in a case study.

Central Asian Leadership Succession: When, Not If, Eugene B. Rumer Dec 2003

Central Asian Leadership Succession: When, Not If, Eugene B. Rumer

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum paper examines the political dynamics of leadership succession in the Central Asian republics and assesses why succession will prove a critical strategic variable in the region’s future. Although regimes in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan showed relative stability in the early post-Soviet period, the author argues that transitions to a new generation of leaders could reshape internal politics, foreign policy alignments, and regional security. The analysis explains how succession patterns may either reinforce existing governance structures or exacerbate weaknesses, potentially triggering broader instability. The paper highlights the implications for U.S. interests, including counterterrorism cooperation, energy security, …
